These are the true heroes and we’re forever grateful to them.👩‍🚒 Posted @withregram • @shotsfromthebug •The nurse returned home after a long, tough and exhausting shift to find her apartment on fire. Frantically and in tears she tries to enter but the smoke was just too much. Someone thankfully had called 911 before she arrived and the SMFD was on the scene. Immediately the fireman were on top of the fire and began to extinguish the flames and control the blaze. Distraught and in frantic tears the nurse exclaims “My dog! my dog is in there!” She had tried to enter, it was her first thought to save him but again the smoke was just to much. The 10-year-old Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu named Nalu was trapped inside. Firefighter Andrew Klein sprang into action, getting on all fours to search the apartment for Nalu as another firefighter sprayed water to keep the flames at bay. Klein found the unconscious dog a few feet from the fire in a bedroom. “He was totally lifeless,” Klein said. “I picked him up and ran out of the apartment because time is key, especially with a small dog … Failure was not an option.” As the nurse knelt nearby crying, Klein and his crew spent the next 20 minutes working on reviving the dog. Klein and another firefighter were patting Nalu’s belly as he started breathing again with the help of the oxygen. The nurse assumed her friend was lost but the firefighter said ‘I’m a positive person. Let’s just get him back.” Another life saved. - Ive lived here on the West side of LA and in Santa Monica for 20 years. I have tremendous respect for the firefighter. Always risking their lives for the sake of others. Around 1700 hours the box alarm was sounded in the area of Central Ave / Yost Place. While en route, responding units were advised by Communications police are on the scene reporting a working fire with possible entrapment. PE805 arrived on scene first due of a 1 story strip mall with smoke showing from the Alpha and Charlie side. PE805 advanced an attack line and forced entry into the business cutting through roll up gates and multiple locks. Units advanced into the structure finding a fire in the rear office and extinguished all remaining fire. There were no trapped occupants and all searches were found negative. We lost one the greats today. I don’t even know if I can accurately put into words what Herbie “Dick” Blabon has meant to Fort Lauderdale Fire Department. He was the guy who took the time to take new hires under his wing. Teaching them the Fort Lauderdale way, carrying on the tradition that was bestowed to him onto the new generation of firemen. Always smiling, always joking and damn good at his job. He was the guy calling other members to check up on them and their families. He was the station jokester and great at pulling pranks around the firehouse. He was the definition of benevolent. Setting up blood drives, helping sick and injured firefighters and setting up Christmas baskets for those in need. He embodied what a fireman was supposed to be, what we should all aspire to be. He, along with a few others, created a memorial to honor the passing of not only those killed in the line of duty but all firefighters who retired from our department. A memorial where families and friends can come to honor their loved ones legacy and share stories. Even in retirement he made it his mission to make sure that once the memorial had no more room for names, we would expand the site and make sure it had plenty of space to honor those we lost for many years to come. Herbie came to this union a few years ago and accomplished just that. Our union, FBA, Honor Guard and museum pulled together and invested over 30 thousand dollars into this project. We got it done, we unveiled the memorial in November of 2019. Herbie was our distinguished guest. VP Salzano always asks our new guys, “What do you want your legacy to be when you leave here?” Herbie Blabon set that bar. You should be like Herbie, caring, benevolent and passionate. He left an everlasting imprint on this department. He’s our G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time). To the Blabon family, especially Martha Faye, our organization of over 400 active members, our retirees and our families grieve with you today. DON’T MAKE THE IC NERVOUS WITH COMMUNICATIONS ISSUES 📻🔥⁠ ⁠ This week are are talking about things that make an IC nervous and lead towards them (perhaps unnecessarily) abandoning the building and going defensive. See yesterday’s post…⁠ ⁠ One of these causes is absolutely communications issues. As an IC, you manage the fire based on what you see and what you hear. What you see is usually very limited from the command post, maybe 2 sides of the building at best. So what we are told is the vast majority of our information.⁠ ⁠ Communications - systems, what does and does not need to be said, etc is a big part of the company officer / chief relationship. We talk about this extensively in the Aggressive Command program. But what I’m NOT talking about is putting the fire out with the radio. Radio transmissions don’t knock down fire. But that doesn’t mean we can just be silent either.⁠ ⁠ What I’m looking for is:⁠ ✅ Information that you could or could not complete your job. Principally this should be structured around the primary objectives of fire control, searches, and extension.⁠ ✅ Standard tactical reports (on scene, 360, roof, etc).⁠ ✅ Safety issues (holes in floor, etc).⁠ ⁠ Most of the rest is usually “nice to know” that can be face to face later.⁠ ⁠ While information is critical, IC’s must also understand that in general - every time someone is on a radio, they’re not working. Limit interruptions by keeping information to the NEED to know, and understand that time moves a lot slower in the command post than it does on the fire floor. Have patience and let them work.⁠ ⁠ I’m very much paraphrasing here due to the limitations of a IG post. Probably most key is that there needs to be training / understanding /relationship between officers and IC’s before the fire on what information and benchmarks are critical. If you haven’t planned this out, don’t expect it to miracle itself onto the fireground.⁠ ⁠ Getting no information, getting information that does not match conditions, screaming/panic on the radio are all red flags that contribute to us abandoning the building....⁠ ⁠ ⬇️⬇️⬇️ - @nmartin33 on Instagram

In Heidelberg und dem Rhein-Neckar-Kreis führt die Nummer zur Integrierten Leitstelle, oder kurz ILS. Im letzten halben Jahr wurde die ILS Rhein-Neckar mit der Feuerwehrleitstelle Heidelberg fusioniert: Heute, zum 1. Oktober, nimmt die neu gegründete gemeinsame Leitstelle offiziell ihren Betrieb auf. An zwei Standorten in Ladenburg und Heidelberg werden Notrufe entgegengenommen, Rettungskräfte alarmiert und Einsätze aufeinander abgestimmt.
