About 2 weeks before I started nursing school i was diagnosed with OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, bipolar disorder AND depersonalization disorder. I saw multiple psychiatrists and therapists & each of them either wanted to prescribe me adderall or just wanted to send me somewhere else. The lack of care, compassion and actual treatment options pushed me to just deal with it on my own. I ultimately just blew my whole life up. I pushed the people closest to me away. I spent the first year of nursing school being reckless or laying in bed for hours on end staring at my ceiling. Not watching tv, not studying, not even sleeping, literally staring at my ceiling. In the darkest most lonely moments of my life i appeared the most alive. I had people telling me i was glowing. Every single morning that I had to get out of bed i cried about it. And the days i didnt HAVE to get out of bed I wouldnt. Basically what Im saying is that shit was hard for me and after feeling like I had lost everything I felt like I at least still had nursing school. Until I failed two classes & in a time when I could barely fight myself to get out of bed I had to fight to get back into nursing school. I had professors & friends telling me to give up. I didnt. i got back in & THEN I had people telling me i didn’t deserve a second chance. I wanted so badly to just give up on everything. 2 weeks ago TODAY i took my last test of nursing school. I just wanted to say that in every single one of these pictures I felt like I didnt want to be alive, i was a failure, I was worthless, etc and when I had NOTHING the only thing that kept me going was getting this degree. Nursing school literally saved my life. And now more THAN EVER i am passionate about going on to get my doctorates and specialize in psychiatry because I want to help people out there JUST LIKE ME that feel like no one understands or cares. I want to be the therapist that I NEEDED when I was going through the worst time of my life. I am so AMAZED that despite all of this I proved everyone who doubted me wrong & most importantly I proved to myself just how strong & resilient I am. INFORMATION IS POWER // This account has been set up on the same principle as sex education - I would rather you were uncomfortable and not ignorant. Every birth only happens ONE time. It is a once in a lifetime event. There is no do-over. You only get one chance. Would you attempt to climb Mt Everest without thorough research, a support crew and preparation?... You would certainly not show up on the day and hope for the best! Yes, birth is a normal physiological, instinctive process, however we have been conditioned in such a way that many women have absolutely no exposure to birth and little, to no, ability to tap into these primal instincts. Please spend your time, money and energy researching pregnancy/birth/postpartum/breastfeeding. Birth trauma is very real and postpartum depression/post traumatic stress is very serious. Birth has become taboo, demonised and surrounded by messages of fear. I am frustrated and concerned with the dangerously high intervention rates. I am grateful for the science and technology available, in the event of true medical need, but are women told about the risks and side effects of intervention? Do women know they can refuse consent? You have the right to say no, the same way you can say no in the bedroom and the workplace. We have been failed by society, mass media and the current culture. All women deserve beautiful, empowered births. And to be nurtured postpartum. Surround yourself with beautiful, positive stories and messages of birth - they do exist and desperately need to rise to the surface to encourage, inspire and support women. As the wonderful Dr Michel Odent once said One cannot help an involuntary process. The point is not to disturb it. I really do believe we need to see images of birth. I had really hyped myself up for my first cold cap experience after reading countless stories about it being extremely uncomfortable, and giving a brain freeze like feeling. BUT I personally dont find it that uncomfortable. Well, the cap itself is tight and a bit restricting under the neck (as you can see I look like a crash test dummy) and it does make you cold so I recommend taking or asking for some blankets, but overall my head adjusts very quickly to the sensation and then Im used to it. Certainly isnt some kind of crippling brain freeze - for me, anyway. A tip I would give is to ask the nurses to really soak your hair as much as possible all over, as this ultimately makes it more effective. Unsolicited body shaming 🌿 Society has normalized harassment and bullying on social media. These are comments I found while scrolling through social media today. There were worse, disgusting ones but I decided against including them. I’ve seen people post similar photos to this and seen the comments say “if you can’t take the hate then you shouldn’t be on social media”. But when and why did it become acceptable and okay to send hate and make unsolicited statements about people’s bodies? I worry about the people who comment these things. I worry about the shame, embarrassment and fear that people feel when they read these comments. How has it become okay and normal to make other people feel harassed, fearful, ashamed and insecure? These comments don’t come out of no where. They are a product of our surroundings. . There’s so many conflicting things society has taught us; what to do, to say, to wear, or ways to behave. There’s so many conflicting opinions. But there is a difference between advice and straight up hating on people and I’m sure we all know that. But some of us mask this and play it off as “a joke” or “trolling” or pretending to care for someone’s health/wellbeing but in actuality the main incentive is to shame the person. The people who comment these things typically project their insecurities and are intimidated or jealous of something which triggers this hate response. For example, someone’s confidence in being themselves or loving and accepting themselves. These unsolicited negative comments are aimed to tear an individual down in order for the commenter to feel better about themselves and regain some form of subconscious power. . I send all the love and healing to those who made these comments.
