To my Papà and Nonni, This year has been a rough one, and this particular Father’s Day is even rougher for us. Losing our Nonno Gaetano less than a week ago has broken our hearts, but we can still smile when we remember all the beautiful memories we have of him. Nonno was an amazing example of what a father figure should be. Caring and loving, strong willed and minded. He was always there for us whenever we needed him. Nonno always wanted the best for himself and his family, and he worked hard to achieve his goals. He was the rock of the family. Losing a loved one can have many different effects on people. For me, it has made me realise that life goes by a lot quicker than it seems. It has taught me to sometimes take a step back and just relax. To not stress over the little things and instead focus on what is really important. It has made me appreciate my papà and everything he does for me and my family with a new sense of awe, and to not get so frustrated with my Nonno Franco when he keeps asking me what his BookFace password is. 😂 Thank you for all the life lessons you have taught me and for showing me love that I could only get from you three incredible gentlemen. Never Forget- Ronald Gamboa, Ron He was a husband, a father, a great leader, co-worker and friend. September 11, 2001, he and his family were passengers on United Airlines Flight 175. On that day, we sadly lost an absolutely beautiful family. Little known secret... Ron caught wind of this hard to handle, hard working Gap manager that had high expectations for performance and was holding his direct supervisor accountable. The powers that be, didn’t know exactly what to do with him. Ron stepped up and said, I’ll take him... send him to me. I’ll figure him out and report back. Ron and this manager went on to being a dynamic duo and they were a force to be reckoned with. He gave this manager an ability to be understood which allowed him to achieve results, be recognized, get promoted and ultimately pay it forward to allow others like him to have the same opportunities. I’m never going to forget what he told me the day I got promoted and moved on... he said, “you are a fighter, that’s what I liked in you. My sweet Grandpa Jim James passed away last night, two days after his 91st birthday. He had a long and wonderful life, and we are all thankful he went peacefully in his sleep after battling Parkinson’s for several years. I am so thankful the assisted living facility he and my grandma are living in let my mom and aunt in several times this weekend so they could be with him in person for the first time since the pandemic began. I got to sing Rodgers and Hammerstein to him over FaceTime (his favorite to play on piano), and am so thankful for technology enabling being close to him in a time when being close is nigh on impossible. Here are some pics of him in the Air Force, my last photo with him (I am SO thankful for a gig that took me to Dallas last Oct), a church photo of him with my grandma, and a photo from last summer when he turned 90. I worshipped my dad. He was handsome and funny. He loved movies and thrift stores and taking things apart and putting them back together. He loved to take us shopping for new clothes. He also struggled with addiction and had a hair trigger temper that didn’t have an off switch. His entire life he battled those demons, a battle he lost when I was 22. A month before he died, we went to Texas to say goodbye. One of the last things he said was “I should’ve been a better dad.” I wasn’t expecting it, but I am grateful he recognized the hurt and pain he caused. Sebastien Benuen and his grandson Aries embrace after completing a harrowing 330-kilometre trek along the Trans-Labrador Highway from Churchill Falls, N.L. • The pair began the walk with the goal of raising $50,000 for 14-year-old Aries, so he could continue pursuing his hockey dream at a private school in Ontario. • Sebastien, a small business owner, has been out of work since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, but he wasnt going to let that deter him from paying his grandsons tuition and expenses. • “I love my grandson. Hes been with me ever since he was 14 months old. Didn’t realize that this would be the last song I’d ever play for Mr. Green, but thank you to the @todayshow for capturing the moment so beautifully. I was working on this Ashokan Farewell arrangement as a gift for when I was going to see him next — he always expected a tray of brownies and a new CD. This arrangement was based on one my brothers and I used to play. Sadly, Mr. Green passed away in April, before it was finished. As a way of coping with his loss, I wrapped it up for it to be played at his service. Super DIY and a bit rough (recorded in an apartment), but I figured I may as well make it available to others. My father passed away on Tuesday, June 2. My babisko ,my best friend, muse of my “experimental art” projects is now my guardian angel. Getting personal but ... I just wanted to thank my lovely friends who supported me so much throughout the years. He thought me not to take life for granted and to be happy with what you have between moments. He fought a lot to be with us, had strength i can never understand. He needs to be on a medical journal for real. I always teased him calling him Terminator. I hope he’ll watch me make it happen and be proud of me. He, a film nerd, always wanted me to make a sci-fi film, I don’t know about that one :) I couldn’t be by his side for the past month as there’re still no flights back to Istanbul. (It’s hard being separated from family during grief, if anyone you know is going thru something similar hit me up) Everyday I’m grateful for his liver transplant donor, I think about him and his family often but especially today. If they only knew that it gave me 6 extra beautiful years with my dad. Yesterday was a tribute to my mom, and today is a tribute to my dad. 20 years ago today we lost my dad in a car accident. He was a pretty cool, laid-back guy. He ate bagels with peanut butter, any kind of bagel that we had in the house, including onion. He’d drink coffee that was sitting in the pot all day. Whatever it was, it was always better than “navy food”. He would make us his special apple-cinnamon pancakes. He said “yello!” when he answered the phone. He enjoyed being outside, putzing, metal-detecting. He loved learning. About anything and everything, new ideas, random stuff. Like me. He still checks in every now and then, to see how our lives are, make sure we are happy, then goes back to the spirit world, where I’m sure there’s even more new things to learn about, and even weirder food combinations to enjoy. Dear PopPop, You were the funniest, most caring, loving grandfather I could have ever asked for. You have been the biggest role model in life by far. Love ya pops! If you know my dad, you know he can be quite eccentric when he has an idea that he really likes. This can be trying for his family because of how devoted he is to that project, sometimes that project is completely insane to the outside observer, but that has never factored into his decision making. Laying grandpa to rest this weekend. I spent several hours combing through thousands of photos at my grandparents house and one thing is constant: Grandpa was always there. There are more photos of my grandpa with his grandchildren than anything else. He was a machinist and a builder, a master craftsman. He taught me how to fish. He taught me how to golf. When my dad passed away, he and my grandma essentially moved into our house and took care of business. He was literally at every single sporting event. My grandpa passed away this week. George Bonnick, my mother’s father, he was a strong, gentle, loving man. He left behind his wife of 63 years, 5 children, 9 grand children and 4 great grandchildren. To me my grandfather always seemed content. He represented strength and stability and he listened with such a deep presence. He served our country, helped build a lot of Cleveland, traveled often and loved his family dearly. I can’t ever remember him saying anything negative about anyone and he always had a zest for life and a twinkle in his eyes. I have always admired him greatly. Several hours before he died he told my grandmother wow that is beautiful and was kind of pointing upwards. She asked what it was and he said I don’t know, it’s something I’ve never seen before. In the middle of the night he pulled out his ivs and shortly after passed. To me he wasn’t afraid, he was able to let go and face the end of his life proud and loved. I am grateful to come from his lineage. To be raised with his example. To have an entire family that exemplifies his best qualities. He met Rayah when she was a baby but she will know about him, she will also carry forward his best traits. Thank you Grandpa for loving and supporting me my entire life, thank you for building a strong family full of love, thank you for the stories you shared with me and the ways you listened. Me and my grandpa, Emmet. He was the direct descendant of enslaved Africans, a civil-rights activist and someone who intimately experienced systemic racism as a constant force in his life. His sons (my dad and uncles) grew up in San Fransisco and carried on the efforts of dismantling racism as they saw it penetrate their own lives on a daily basis. All you have to do is choose to love them first, then ask what it’s like. Then listen. If you don’t have experts on what it is to live in a black body. Find one. Follow one. Read one. Love one. There’s no excuse anymore to have all your information being filtered through white voices. Easy Rider indeed!! Too much fun doing a “boda boda” ride at House in the Wild! “Boda bodas” are one of the common modes of transportation in Kenya - think of them as Uber but on 2 wheels. The name comes from “border to border” as they are inexpensive transportation to move across East Africa. After a quick “test” on the cricket pitch (see the video in my story), Ian was cleared to drive one - he owned a motorcycle for many years so it was just a slight adjustment for him. I was 8. He would take the morning off work and we’d go to watch test cricket at Wankhede. We used to enter from Marine Drive near Zaver Mahal. Park the car across the road and queue up to get into the stadium. The rule was simple : I had to always hold his index finger during the walk in. It used to be crowded but never suffocating. He had prepared my lunch box, water bottle and given me a cap for when the sun hit the west stand in the evening. My steps would quicken when I’d hear a roar from the crowds inside. The finger would restrain my speed. Up the stairs, into daylight and the thrill, the splendour of cricket bathed in sunshine with 20,000 people watching. It was only when we’d reached our seats that I was allowed to release the finger. I can never forget the sense of safety that finger gave me. It was as if once I held it I was cloaked in inter galactic protective armour. That’s the wonder of being the right kind of father. It makes your son Superman. This image was taken 22 years after those test match days. 22 years after a boy had experienced boundless love and kindness. Thank you, Baba. grief. I am learning that at its core, is change we did not want. i was shocked to learn my dad took his last breathe as i sat on the floor of my new studio just days before it opened this year & just weeks after we said goodbye to his mom. there was no warning sign of either of them leaving us so soon. my friends know i can compartmentalize like a champ & even so, i have to admit i am getting rocked by grief. this time in quarantine has given me the space to actually experience & feel these feelings instead of suppress them, yet i still cannot come to the reasonable conclusion that they’re both gone. i drafted the below to say at their funeral the morning of. while it’s raw & unrefined, it felt so relieving to say it out loud & to this day is the only words i can muster. . last night i read a note my dad gave to me when i was in high school. the first sentence was “where do i start?” & my sentiment has been the same every day since i lost my dad. where do i even start to celebrate my dad in every way he deserves, to represent how much he is loved, admired, respected, or even start to say good bye. the second line of his note was “well, i love you with all of my heart” & dad, grandma - i love each of you with all of my heart. we all love you. one of my friends, who by chance I recently started working with again is the only other angela in my life. i don’t take it lightly that god has put us in the same place at the same time i had to say goodbye to my grandma angela. for years my friend has ingrained in me that we were all created with purpose on purpose for purpose... which is another way to describe our why in life. & while the why of our life can be a challenging idea to wrap our heads around, it is so easy to define for my dad and grandma. my grandma’s purpose embodied care. she was the most caring person in every relationship - as a wife, mother, grandmother & great grandmother to gianna, ava & arianna. she cared so much that she needed your stomach to be as full as possible, even if you already ate your weight in pasta. she cared for her husband, my grandpa ben, so much. so much that when he passed a few years ago, (1/4) continued below... - @thelizap on Instagram

In anticipation of today, over the last few weeks I have been considering the value of celebrating the anniversary of death in the same we we celebrate birth or the origins of love. I was feeling fairly against the notion, however this morning I considered what my father would have said if I had brought this question to him while he was alive. There’s no question he would have immediately referenced a dozen or so ancient cultures who believed that death was the most important aspect of life and one to be deeply revered and respected. He would have said, “why do you think I spent decades translating the Egyptian book of the dead if there wasn’t something to be celebrated” and that would have spiraled him into a tirade about ceremony and practice that would go on and on until I finally stopped him because at this point he’s talking about the different kinds of snakes that lives in ancient Sumer. And if that wasn’t enough for me he would have also stated, “if death isn’t important, why is jean Claude van damme, the greatest actor of all time in so many movies with the word death in the title?” You got me there pops, so celebrate we shall. It’s a bittersweet week for me this week. My beautiful boy turns 20 and leaves for university. To say I’m proud of him is an understatement. After #Covid19 ruined his chance to make his film he made a film about not being able to make a film and smashed his uni entry interview with that instead. He’s talented, yes, but he’s also driven, committed and he’s my boy so he’s bloody minded too. I’ll be taking him to the next chapter in his life on Saturday. That’s the sweet bit. The bitter bit is that it wasn’t easy with his mum and we are only where we are because we both, Max & I, worked at it. He hasn’t lived with me since he was small and I feel like I’ve missed so much time with him. He knows I love him and I know he loves me and I hope he knows I’ve done what I can, I hope I’ve helped equip him for what’s to come...I worry I’ve let him down. Stupid I know. I wish many things but to have had him here with me...well, if wishes were fishes we’d all cast nets eh. My Granny and Granda - Mary and John Judge - on O’Connell St. some time in the late forties. They lived all their adult lives in the Greek St. flats. My Granda worked in Guinnesses and the fish market while my Granny worked selling fruit on Thomas St. on the same patch that her mother and grandmother sold on. When her grandmother - my great great grandmother - started out they grew the produce that they sold in the Phoenix park. I’m thinking a lot today about matrilineal lines and how women kept everything together while men struggled to evolve past a very basic stage. My Granda was in St. Joseph’s Industrial school in Artane which was infamous for its abuse of young boys and undoubtedly carried a lot of trauma from his time there.
