September is NICU awareness month and something that I never thought would directly impact our family. NICU life was a trying time to say the least and if you look back at my feed I actually didn’t document too much of it publicly. Even though I was prepared for their prematurity, every time I looked at them with tubes and wires connected to their tiny bodies I’d wish I had been able to keep them in longer. Those feelings hit me even harder every time I had to walk through the doors without them. Between that, a bad post-op infection, and a very confused little boy, it was just a lot. The pregnancy actually rocked him harder than adjusting to four siblings did, and it was very unsettling for him to see his mama in and out of the hospital so unexpectedly. Once they were here he wasn’t able to meet them which only complicated things more. I had to be very mindful of giving him that security back, and that meant intentional time with him which also meant time away from the babies. Whether I was home or at the hospital, I always felt torn and incomplete. I experienced many moments of insecurity myself and feelings of uselessness, but our sweet nurses always gave me the reassurance that I needed and I still joke that they took just as good care of me during that time as they did our babies. And all that to say, it was all just part of our story and it taught me patience, resilience, and new strength. I am so grateful they are all HOME and healthy right where they should be and will never forget the moment of finally having all of my babies under one roof. We have been so so blessed. September will always be a month to celebrate their NICU journey, their homecoming, and now their baptism tomorrow which happens to fall on their due date. Endless prayers to my fellow NICU mamas in the thick of it and those who carry the memories like I do now. And a special thanks to all NICU workers out there, especially ours at Saint Peter’s University Hospital & Dr. Houlihan. Beyond grateful for you and of course God who carried us through. • see that tiniest one there in my arms, that’s our Henry Ring. boy does he have a story with many chapters already (I’ll share his birth story on his birthday 😘) • at our 20 week ultrasound Henry was diagnosed with mild fetal ventriculomegaly - meaning he had more fluid in his brain than what was considered normal. we then had to have monthly ultrasounds to check fluid levels, each time they had crept up a little from the last time. • BUT one year ago today at 34 weeks we had our prayers answered, his levels had decreased and were well within the normal range 🙌🏼 I was shocked! I remember looking at the screen and noticing that something looked different even before the tech confirmed!
