We judge people’s decisions but they live a specific pain experience that even if you had the same injury you’d have a different experience. Also most people don’t have the knowledge that healthcare providers do and even when they do they still make poor decisions based on objective information.. . Also the fact that we put less stock into a “subjective” experience someone has is ridiculous because they live it. Subjective is defined as if someone’s opinion, while objective is considered to be not based on opinion but facts. But give how biology fundamentally works we somewhat have this backwards. We put more stock into special tests and other measurements that are only objective because we say they are despite the flaws in logic that put them on this pedestal. When many times a “subjective” report gives us better and more useful information regarding treatments and the issues someone is experiencing. . . We also continue to attempt to make a subjective experience less subjective with numbers and other measurements. Which is dangerous territory as far as philosophy and ethics go. We are inherently trying to take experiences that are unique to each person and quantify them in ways that misrepresent that experience. And the more we learn about the body the more someone should realize we are just scratching the surface of understanding. Reading the 5E paper and the Tendon paper that Moseley and Cook were authors on would help someone see that. . . Just because we know something doesn’t mean we truly understand. At times, with an N of 1, It’s a fine line we walk between advocating for what activity can do and we know is capable of and validating an experience that someone has had. With the N of 1 it may be better to validate the experience and move forward.
