With the help of citizen scientists, astrophysicists have discovered about 100 cool worlds in the Sun’s neighborhood. They’re brown dwarfs, sometimes referred to as “failed stars,” which are objects that are more massive than planets but lighter than stars. Endless airglow, Utah has a lot of it! @p.sisto.images with a prime example: :Grit -- Capitol Reef National Park, near Torrey UT (6/12/2020) Red dust on my camera gear. Red dust on my knees and boots. Red dust rubbing my contact lenses and gritting in my teeth. Utah is the land of red rock, constantly eroding and changing at a pace unnoticed by generations of humans. But the result of this unrelenting change is seen, felt, and *tasted* by all who visit, especially as the cool air of night interacts with the baked stone of day...resulting in winds which whip up everything around you as you stand under the stars. If still nights happen in Capitol Reef, I never experienced one in my entire month there. This view is from the edge of a precipice overlooking the iconic Chimney Rock formation. Many photographers have shot Chimney Rock with the Milky Way, but I hadnt seen a take from this birds eye perspective yet. This was also by far the most intense display of airglow I experienced, with ripples of green across the sky even to the zenith. The great Andromeda is a favourite target around this time of year, well above the tree line in the North West after sunset. Its also dark enough here that you can see it with the naked eye during moonless nights like last night. Its size makes it a perfect candidate to shoot with the RedCat 51... essentially a very nice 250mm camera lens that functions like a telescope. NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley returned from the #ISS on Sunday afternoon after a 62 day stay. In total, the duo spent 64 days in orbit, completed 1,024 orbits around Earth and traveled 27,147,284 statute miles. What is the first thing you see?💀The expansive, 600 trillion km wide Rosette Nebula, 5,000 light years away from home. 💫 The lovely, symmetric shape of this stellar nursery is sculpted by the winds and radiation from its central cluster of hot young, O-type stars. Stars in the energetic cluster, cataloged as NGC 2244, are only a few million years young, while the central cavity in the Rosette Nebula, is about 50 light-years in diameter. The nebula can be seen with a small telescope toward the constellation of Monoceros, the Unicorn. 🌌 The radiation from the young stars excites the atoms in the nebula, causing them to emit radiation themselves producing the emission nebula we see. NGC7000 (North American Nebula) This was my first attempt with an H-Alpha filter (7nm) and an unmodified DSLR. There are posts and posts about how it is is pointless to try and use this filter due to the tiny amount of light captured and the inability of an unmodified camera to capture light in the red spectrum, but I had to try it for myself! Conditions: Bortle 8 skies. Moon 70% waxing gibbous. No more nights, only perpetual astronomical twilight. Windy Equipment used: Skywatcher Explorer 150PDS HEQ5 Pro Mount Unmodified Canon EOS R Baader H-Alpha 7nm Filter Baader Coma Corrector 55 Lights (ISO 1600) x 120 seconds (Unguided) (Ultimately 48 images were used) 15 Darks 15 Lights 100 Bias Stacked in Deep Sky Stacker Processed in Pixinsight I was really happy with the final outcome with a total exposure time of just over an hour and a half. Ultimately with shorter (or no nights) there is hardly any time to capture images anyway. So guys, what do you think? The Rosette Nebula is an enormous cloud of dust and gas 130 light years across and some 5000 light years away from Earth. The high energy radiation from the young stars in the central cluster heat up the surrounding gas, ionizing it. This causes it to glow very faintly and allows us to see it. The mass of the nebula itself is estimated at 10,000 solar masses, and it is coalescing to produce over 2500 new young stars currently continuing to illuminate this stellar nursery. This image represents 3.5 hours of exposure taken with a ZWO ASI 183MM Pro astronomy camera through a @canonusa 200mm L lens at f5. Hundreds of 30s sub-exposures were stacked (in DSS) to reduce the noise in the image. The colors are obtained through a process called narrowband imaging where B&W images are taken through three filters. These three images are combined afterwords by assigning each image to Red, Green, or Blue. A @skywatcherusa Star Adventurer mount was used with no autoguiding. The Omega Nebula (M17), also referred to as the Swan Nebula resides roughly 5500 light years away. This image consists of only 1.5 hours of exposure time (10×3 min Ha, 10x3 min OIII and 10x3 min SII filters) before its view was obstructed by trees. Day 3 baby 😎 Went n shot some milk last night with the boys & Meg, of course. . The first image was shot around 60mm then half way through the 8sec exposure I zoomed out creating those star trails. Honestly wasn’t expecting to post a shot like this but after throwing an edit on it I thought it was awesome. . For the second image I tried a good ol multi image stack for the first time. That photo is made up of 10 images stacked to reduce noise. It came out pretty clean! . I shot these at f/2.8 with an 8sec exposure and whopping 10,000 iso. This shows my progress taking space photos of the Elephants Trunk Nebula starting with the first one 4 years ago when I couldnt even find it, to my latest picture that earned me a NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Picture 1 was captured in September of 2016. I spent 30 minutes pointing my telescope at this spot and when I combined my exposures to make the final image, nothing was there. Picture 2 was captured in November of 2016. This is when I started using narrowband filters to fight against light pollution, but I wasnt yet interested in color images. Picture 3 was captured in 2017 and my first attempt at capturing the Elephants Trunk Nebula in color. Picture 4 was captured in 2018 and I thought it was my best attempt up to that point. Picture 5 was captured in 2019. I went big on this one with 22 hours of exposure time. Star Forming Region NGC 3582 . Whats happening in the NGC 3582 nebula? Bright stars and interesting molecules are forming. The complex nebula resides in the star forming region called RCW 57. Visible in this image are dense knots of dark interstellar dust, bright stars that have formed in the past few million years, fields of glowing hydrogen gas ionized by these stars, and great loops of gas expelled by dying stars. A detailed study of NGC 3582, also known as NGC 3584 and NGC 3576, uncovered at least 33 massive stars in the end stages of formation, and the clear presence of the complex carbon molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are thought to be created in the cooling gas of star forming regions, and their development in the Suns formation nebula five billion years ago may have been an important step in the development of life on Earth. This was a very short imaging session taken on October 5, 2019 as I was testing the stability of a DIY observatory. Magic: The Gathering 🧙‍♂️ __________________________ Discovered by Caroline Herschel the Wizard Nebula in Cepheus surrounds a young star cluster. The stellar winds from the cluster will blow away the nebula in about a million years so hurry up and shoot it Now before the Astrophoto Police shows up I need to clarify that this is technically a composite image. It’s based on real data from two light spectra (Hydrogen and Oxygen), but the colour and details have been accentuated by processing. The goal here is to show the beauty of the dust and it’s intricate structure. Same with a Hubble image only on the amateur range. So not a scientific image🤯 The Astrophoto Police is not to be confused with the Flats Police which I totally respect. Heart Nebula in Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulfur. What powers the Heart Nebula? The large emission nebula dubbed IC 1805 looks, in whole, like a heart. The nebulas glow -- as well as the shape of the gas and dust clouds -- is powered by by stellar winds and radiation from massive hot stars in the nebulas newborn star cluster Melotte 15. This deep telescopic image maps the pervasive light of narrow emission lines from atoms of hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur in the nebula. The field of view spans just over two degrees on the sky, so that it appears larger than four times the diameter of a full moon. The cosmic heart is found in the constellation of Cassiopeia, the boastful mythical Queen of Aethiopia . - I photographed a nameless nebula in the constellation Cepheus with my telescope!! It is only known by a designator of NGC 7822! What would you name it?

I had the honor to shoot a full night at the famous MAGIC telescopes at the ORM on La Palma. These incredibly sensitive telescopes detect cherenkov radiation in the upper atmosphere, a beta product of cosmic gamma rays. The pixels of the detectors are big as grapefruits, operate at over 1000V and observe the atmosphere at over 1million frames per second. The two dishes work in sync to provide parallax for depth data. And yes, all the frames are from 8K timelapses. 19500 frames/1TB shot in that single night. Whats in the sky this Wednesday?⁠ ⁠ Deneb is a first-magnitude star in the constellation of Cygnus, the swan. Deneb is one of the vertices of the asterism known as the Summer Triangle and the head of the Northern Cross. It is the brightest star in Cygnus and the 19th brightest star in the night sky, with an average apparent magnitude of +1.25. A blue-white supergiant, Deneb rivals Rigel as the most luminous first magnitude star. However its distance, and hence luminosity, is poorly known; its luminosity is somewhere between 55,000 and 196,000 times that of the Sun. SHEY CHORTENS -with Saturn, Jupiter, Milkyway and the Scorpius Constellation from left to right Around 2 weeks back I saw a beautiful picture on a friends story depicting the shey stupa fields. I made up my mind to go there whenever I find time. Yesterday we reached this place and the framing and orientation of milkyway was also perfect but never realised the light pollution out there. We continued shooting since the cloud was also coming hoping to more post processing work and it turned out to be true as it was quite a task to reach this point.
