This must be one of the most famous phone boxes in the UK, located in the village of Bampton near Haweswater and Shap in the Lake District and used in the cult 1987 film ‘Withnail and I’. The film - premiered at Zeffirellis in Ambleside with director and writer Bruce Robinson in the audience - follows the fortunes (or rather misfortunes) of two unemployed London actors in 1969 who take a break in the Lake District at a cottage belonging to Withnail’s uncle Monty. Most of the Lake District scenes are filmed around Shap and Bampton including the one where Withnail phones his agent from the Bampton call box. Today there’s a little guest book inside where people can write comments, plus a cover from the film’s DVD. The movie was made by Handmade Films, a company co-founded by one of The Beatles, George Harrison. King’s College Chapel was built in phases by a succession of kings of England from 1446 to 1515, a period which spanned the Wars of the Roses and three subsequent decades. During the Civil War the Chapel was used as a training ground by Oliver Cromwells troops, but escaped major damage, possibly because Cromwell, having been a Cambridge student, gave orders for it to be spared. Graffiti left by these soldiers is still visible on the north and south walls near the altar. During World War II most of the stained glass was removed and the Chapel again escaped damage. The Bishop Hooper Monument and Gloucester Cathedral in the background. Located a short walk from Gloucester Cathedral is the Bishop Hooper Memorial is a pretty historic monument in St Mary’s Square. The best way to find this is by passing through Saint Mary’s Gate to the west of the main building. This is found in the gardens of St Mary de Lode Church and is quite impressive. The monument commemorates Bishop Hooper who was burnt at the stake in 1555. He was killed because of his protestant religious beliefs. This memorial was built in between the years of 1861-63. Rogue Wave 2020 runs from September 28 to October 25 on Ward’s Island, Toronto. Each day we are featuring a different artist who is exhibiting in this outdoor exhibition. Laura Shepherd has lived on Toronto Island since 1993. Along with working as a production artist/designer and director in broadcast animation for 28 years, she joined the Island collective ‘L’ecole des faux arts’ in 1995 and has been part of their shared studio space at Artscape Gibraltar Point since 2012. Living and working on the shores of Lake Ontario, she is drawn to the riveting effects of weather and light, the island, the city, the lake and sky. Laura is a part of the growing collective of outdoor Island artist mini galleries, presenting a changing offering of recent work in scratchboard, experiments with gouache, and works from her archives. 📚 𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘪𝘱: 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦! 📚 I was dropping off some books I’d finished with into this little telephone library in Strangford in Northern Ireland. It got me thinking about how much writers should rely on reading books. One thing that made us all writers is reading. Sometimes we can be so busy with our WIP that we forget reading is a vital part to being a writer. Without it, we cannot possibly improve our craft. Every time I struggle with my WIP and can’t seem to get the words out, I take some time away to read. Even if it takes me a few days to feel like I can return to the manuscript, I sit down and read. We put so much pressure on ourselves sometimes to finish a manuscript, even if we don’t feel like it. We feel bad if we take a day or two or even a week away from it. But we shouldn’t feel like that. Reading is working on our manuscript. It might not feel like it, but as we read books we learn what tropes we like, what plot twists we love, how writers create an engaging story and most importantly, we learn about how we can create a story we and our readers will love. So my top writing tip, cliche as it is, is to read as much and as often as you possibly can. Without it, we cannot improve our writing. If you need to take a day or a week off from writing, do it, but make sure you do some reading to help you! What are you currently reading? “The Corner” - this corner has been part of our daily bike outing for the last ten weeks. At the start of lockdown our youngest could only just ride a pedal bike. Now he’s cruising up and round this steep and tight bend, we call it “The Challenge Corner”. There’s been several crashes into the post box. Our world shrank so small. But there’s been joy in the stripping back, the simplicity, and the routine. Simple pleasures.. * Last week I went up to visit my parents for a week. Due to COVID they haven’t seen my boys in almost 6 months. Heartbreaking for all concerned - but the safest and the right thing to do.. * We kept our distance whilst there, spending most our time outside and even sleeping in a tent!. * Usually at their house we go out to various beaches / playgrounds / farms etc. But this time was different, my parents are high risk and have been shielding so we wanted to stay home. Initially I was a bit concerned about keeping my 4 & 6 year old entertained but it was great.. * One of the positives to lockdown I’ve found is being forced to stay home. I’m defo an “organiser” and often have activities planned for every part of the weekend (often weeks in advance - much to my husbands despair!) . But lockdown has forced us to stay at home and make our own fun, which I have to admit I’ve enjoyed.. * Whilst at my parents we taught my eldest to cycle better, we pulled up and ate veggies from the garden, we watched TV, and highlight of the week - we cleaned out the pond 😂. * For anyone comparing and despairing at a bank holiday weekend at home with no plans - relax. Vandaag speelden onze dames hun eerste wedstrijd, tegen de dames van Rugbyclub The Big Bulls. Voor 10 van de 14 dames was dit zelfs hun allereerste wedstrijd ooit! De 14 dames kwamen op achterstand, maar bleven knokken tegen 24 Bulls. Aan het eind van de wedstrijd stond er een prachtige 22-22 op het scorebord! Bijna een jaar geleden hun eerste training, nu eindelijk hun eerste wedstrijd, met plezier, strijd en een geweldig resultaat. The day has finally come! After being closed for virtually 4 months the Visitor Centre is reopening again today! It will be open from 11am until 3pm today (Wednesday) and tomorrow this week, and the same again next week. Entry to the centre is via the back of the building which is clearly marked and we are open for takeaway refreshments only at the moment.
