Meet #306, a weanling harbor seal who stranded in Cape Elizabeth earlier this week and has been receiving critical care at our center. She is battling a significant case of pneumonia. Our team also noticed some abnormalities in her flipper movement and mobility, but she was too critical to immediately investigate. At first, her case was evaluated hour by hour. With help from medicated nebulizers, medications, and supportive care, she finally started showing small signs of improvement. Yesterday she was still not strong enough to visit MMoMEs veterinarian for x-rays, so Brunswick Veterinary Clinic (@brunswickvetclinic) kindly offered their equipment. Thanks to the generosity of their wonderful team, she did not have to travel very far to figure out what else was going on-thank you! X-rays were sent to MMoMEs veterinarian, and revealed not only the severity of her pneumonia, but also that she has a dislocated shoulder-ouch! We are unsure of how this happened, but we are keeping her comfortable and continuing treatments. Stay tuned for more updates on this little fighter of a patient! 💙 - @marinemammalsofme on Instagram

Photo by @daisygilardini Harp seal pups are among the fastest mammals to be weaned. They can quadruple their body weight in just 12 days. They grow from roughly 10 kg (22 pounds) at birth to as much as 40 kg (88 pounds) just 12 days later, when fully weaned. Thanks to their mothers’ especially fat milk, they can gain more than 2 kg (4.5 pounds) a day! A curious Weddel seal lounges on some sea ice near the top of the Antarctic peninsula. We were lucky on this day, and managed to get our zodiacs in the water and did a few sea ice landings where we were able to walk out on to some free-floating bits of ice, bound for who knows where. The seals were very curious about what we were up to, and some came right over to us, crossing two bits of ice and scrambled up to meet us, coming incredibly close. Not this one though. This one barely cared enough to spare us a glance as our zodiac motors interrupted his nap on the way past - but he was cute. Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Jag har ett speciellt förhållande till sälar. Jag har jobbat många år med att assistera vid sälobduktioner på museet. Och under många år var jag projektledare för ett avelsprogram för gråsäl i Forsmark. Kutarna som föddes i projektet släpptes fria till södra Östersjön. Innan dess frysmärkte vi dem (en slags tatuering på bägge sidorna av kroppen). Projektet avslutades för över tio år sedan men så sent som i våras träffade jag på en av ”mina” frysmärkta sälar, Silvia. Hon var 5 veckor då jag frysmärkte henne med ”S5” och släppte henne till frihet år 2004. Nu är hon 16 år. Jag lärde mig mycket om sälar under tiden jag ansvarade för avelshägnet. Vi hade bara två honor i hägnet men de hade verkligen olika personligheter. Om du ser en frysmärkt säl så lova att höra av dig till mig! Gråsälen kan bli uppemot 40 år så du har fortfarande en chans! Det finns tre sälarter i Östersjön och gråsälen är den största av dem alla. Sälarna var kraftigt hotade pga miljögifter, som gjorde honorna sterila. Antalet gråsälar låg på en miniminivå på 1980-talet, bara några få tusen fanns i hela Östersjön. Vi hade förgiftat Östersjön med gifter som PCB. Åttio år tidigare fanns det runt 100 000 gråsälar och 300 000 vikaresälar! Förutom att honorna blev sterila fick sälarna problem med tandlossning, benförändringar, skador på klor, päls och inre organ. Gråsälen fick verkligen betala ett högt pris för vår användning av kemikalier! På enheten för miljöforskning och övervakning är vi flera som jobbar med sälar. Det är viktigt att vi följer upp deras hälsa och populationsstorlekar. Just nu är det sex personer som jobbar med att obducera och provta de sälar vi får in (gråsäl, vikaresäl och knubbsäl) och två personer jobbar med inventering av grå- knubb- och vikaresäl. Dessutom jobbar jag med miljögifter i sälar. The Australian Sea Lions have very distinct characteristics between the males and females. The males are dark brown with a light yellow mane around their heads. Manatee Wildlife Discovery 🤩 • My passion in travel is wildlife. I’ve been lucky enough to experience amazing land & sea encounters 😍. • • Often my trips solely revolve around an animals sightings. The Manatee experience was one of those occasions😊. • I’ve been to Florida 5 times but never visited Walt Disney World 😲. I go for wildlife and there’s some great opportunities here... Welcome to the world of the Manatee ( also known as the sea cow 🐮). • I searched all over the world for these elusive creatures- Brazil, Mexico, Belize & Costa Rica - never had any luck spotting one 😩... One day I read a small article and realised that the best place to see them was in the beautiful Crystal River (North Florida). • • I hired a boat & captain and set off before sunrise one December morning... We had incredible luck there was hundreds of Manatees 🤩😍. • We were the only boat out there for a good couple of hours and had these incredible creatures all to ourselves. • It didn’t take long for me to realise that these animals are incredibly friendly and gentle. They love human interaction, in fact they love to hug you 😬🥰 & really appreciate a tummy tickle (see other pics). • • This lives long in my memory as one of my favourite Wildlife Encounters. Ayer llegó este amiguito, es un ejemplar de pingüino de magallanes(Spheniscus magellanicus), tiene dos lesiones bastante graves en sus dos patitas y un estado de desnutrición que se ve a simple vista. Las heridas son muy llamativas, una porque son identicas en la dos patas y también por la forma y orientación que presentan, esto nos hace pensar que pudo haber sido un corte con un objeto afilado o que este pequeñín quedó atascado en una red o sedal de pesca. ¿Qué creen ustedes amigos? Ya que cada ves es más frecuente este tipo de lesiones y ¿cómo podriamos evitar estas lamentables situaciones? Whilst on another tasking this morning we were flagged down by a member of public to a seal pup they had found wedged in the rocks. Once freed from the rocks the seal was pup-sat by us then taken by British Divers Marine Life Rescue down to RSPCA - Mallydams Wood to be checked over and recuperate as it is rather underweight and has a few grazes. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. Mr Tumnus was rescued in West Sussex around 5 weeks ago, he had a nasty open wound of unknown origin, possibly a bite from another seal. Initially looked after by AlphaPet Veterinary Clinic in Bognor Regis, and then moved on to @rspca_mallydams_wood for ongoing treatment. Say hello to Dim Sum! This little lady joined us 6th September after being rescued from Mawgan Porth, Newquay. She was found malnourished, tired and dehydrated with an ulcer on her eye so the decision was made to rescue her so the team here are able to help her get back to full health. Dim Sum is now in our main hospital, and is slowly putting on weight, she was only 11.5kg when she arrived which is very small! She has also come off treatment for her eye and is taking fish really well which is a positive step in the right direction. She is due her first paddle soon so we will share that with you all! This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. We are happy to report that grey seal Pippi Longstocking is healing well from the surgeries she underwent last month! While removing her sutures during a sedated procedure last week, our Animal Rescue team measured and weighed Pippi, who has been in our care since she was around 1 month old. They found that she has gained 22kg and grown 21cm since being admitted to the Animal Care and Rescue Center in February! Staff and volunteers have begun reintroducing soft tactile enrichment items to Pippi as her status improves—buoys, dog toys and light shower spray are among her favorites. She also enjoys snacking on ice, which keeps her hydrated and helps to process her cocktail of prescribed medications. She is currently receiving an anti-inflammatory medication and two types of antibiotics; we are planning to phase her off of them in the coming weeks. - @nationalaquarium on Instagram

Say hello to Empanada! She joined us on 8th September after being rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue medics from West Cornwall after being spotted without her mum on a busy seal haul out. She was incredibly hungry and began approaching other adult seals. After being monitored for 24 hours by Cornwall Research Group Trust volunteers in the hope that her mum would return, and also receiving a few bites from other seals on the beach, the decision was made to lift her to safety. She was given 24 hours of fluids to rehydrate her and is now being weaned onto fish which she loves! She makes a lot of noise when shes hungry to let the team know, she is still well below birth weight but is gaining weight which is fantastic. Because she is so small she is having a bit of trouble regulating her body temperature so you may see her during your visit under her heat lamp having a little snooze. This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. What a difference 24 hours makes! 💙 Meet #316, a weanling harbor seal rescued from Kennebunkport and admitted to our critical care facility last night. She is extremely underweight for her age, weighing just 25 pounds. For reference, a healthy harbor seal pup weighs about 25 pounds at birth. 😯 Not only is she malnourished, but she also has several small wounds on her body and around her muzzle.
