This is true of cats but also some people! I have had many clients over the years who say they desperately want to be in a relationship but are so self-protected and boundaried that connection can’t get in. I believe what they are telling me—they do, in their heart, want a relationship. The problem is their head and body often get in the way. Self-protection is a coping mechanism. Most likely one that was adaptive at one time (childhood or early adulthood) but is maladaptive now. Most people thrive in connection and wither in isolation. Loneliness is deadly (check the statistics in Japan). Connection heals. The work here is to find another (a better!) coping mechanism to replace extreme self-protection. It’s a practice, not a decision. You needed to keep yourself safe for a reason...and you have.
