Happy birthday to my mom! I’ve been thinking a lot about her lately, especially after giving a presentation at BYU last week to an entrepreneurship for women class. I talked about how I come from a long line of strong women and was trying to pinpoint why that’s important to my story—I think I’ve figured it out. You know the saying “you can’t be what you can’t see”? Well, my mom showed me possibilities. She, along with her sisters, studied ballet and attended The American School of Ballet in NYC when they were 16 respectively. They lived there on their own and later joined The New York City Ballet (yes! Under Balanchine!). To this day, I’m a major ballet fan (didn’t have the body/spring for it) and it’s even become my favorite guilty pleasure here on the grams. Because I was always in awe of her accomplishments growing up, I never felt restricted or even noticed the restrictions that were placed on me on account of culture or what not (I also realize the privilege I was born into.) Rather, I felt and continue to feel the freedom to pursue what and how I want. I thank her and her path for showing me the way and hope that we can all feel the freedom to pursue our own paths and feel confident in those choices. Happy birthday mom! 40 years ago the world lost a beautiful light. In August, 1980, 20 year old Dorothy Stratten was brutally murdered by her demented, psychopath ex-husband. Dorothy had recently found fame after being chosen by Hugh Hefner to be Playboy Playmate of the Year (1980.) She was also an up and coming actress. She appeared in, “They All Laughed,” with Audrey Hepburn and Ben Gazzara. It was often said that Hefner felt that in many ways his life ended the day Dorothy died. Dorothy was very special. Peter Bogdanovich later wrote a book about her called, “The Killing of the Unicorn: Dorothy Stratten.” Dorothy’s tragic story played a role in the Life After Project taking a stand against domestic violence. We are currently in the early stages of opening a free-standing facility in North Carolina that helps women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. In 1977 I had this idea to create a veil of #hair by using carpet thread to secure each individual section. Claire had very thick hair, which was exactly what was needed to achieve the same weight from roots to end. After several hours creating the veil I then folded it back over Claire’s head so that Yvonne Gold could do the make up. Unfortunately she caught her nail in the veil and caused the shape to hang totally sideways, I was now distraught and just wanted to go home. Kay said, “Lets go to the pub and work out how to salvage this”. Hispanic Heritage Month Day 12 Celia Cruz, in full Úrsula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso, Cuban American singer who reigned for decades as the “Queen of Salsa Music,” electrifying audiences with her wide-ranging soulful voice and rhythmically compelling style. Her musical breakthrough came in 1950 when she replaced lead singer Myrta Silva of the popular orchestra La Sonora Matancera. Cruz sang regularly with the ensemble on radio and television, toured extensively, and appeared with it in five films produced in Mexico. She also recorded with La Sonora Matancera, and beginning with Canta Celia Cruz (1956; “Celia Cruz Sings”), her songs with the group were compiled as full-length albums. In addition, Cruz headlined Havana’s Tropicana nightclub in the 1950s. After the Cuban Revolution of 1959, Havana’s nightlife all but disappeared. Along with the other members of La Sonora Matancera, Cruz left Cuba for Mexico and then the United States, eventually settling in New Jersey. Success came after Cruz became identified with salsa, a Hispanic dance music that evolved from musical experimentation with Caribbean sounds. She re-created herself for a younger generation of Hispanics by singing in the Latin opera Hommy and by recording updated Latin classics for Johnny Pacheco’s Vaya record label. Before long, Cruz emerged as a central figure within New York’s vibrant salsa scene. With a voice described as operatic, Cruz moved through high and low pitches with an ease that belied her age, and her style of improvising rhymed lyrics added a distinctive flavour to salsa. What a woman she was 🏆 Vale the extraordinary Helen Reddy and her amazing anthem “I am woman”. I had the profound honour of performing this song for the first @cityofsydney womens only event in 2016 with legends like @gloriasteinem Senator Penny Wong @leigh_sales @clovermoore Professor Larissa Behrendt and a host of extraordinary women, and I realised how really beautiful her song is. It’s not angry, its not bitter - it’s simply proud, strong and pro equality. 2 years later when we were celebrating Aussie female musicians in the Comm Games Closing ceremony in honour of medal equity for the first time in history, I tried to get this song included, and like the initial record execs 50 years ago, it was deemed inappropriate / too angry by the final (male surprise surprise😂) decision maker - geez I wish I could have had the final say (on this and MANY things!) and included the first EVER Australian Grammy award winning songwriter. Luckily I got to do it again that year with @therealkateceberano @auntyzozo & @sophiekohmusic for the inaugural @womeninmusicaus 🏆 Anyhoo, amazingly, the first 2 Aussie Grammys were won by women - Dame Joan Sutherland and then Helen a decade later. WOW. Thank you to women like Helen and Merle Thornton and co who paved the way for so many women.
