Hispanic Heritage Month Day 12 Celia Cruz, in full Úrsula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso, Cuban American singer who reigned for decades as the “Queen of Salsa Music,” electrifying audiences with her wide-ranging soulful voice and rhythmically compelling style. Her musical breakthrough came in 1950 when she replaced lead singer Myrta Silva of the popular orchestra La Sonora Matancera. Cruz sang regularly with the ensemble on radio and television, toured extensively, and appeared with it in five films produced in Mexico. She also recorded with La Sonora Matancera, and beginning with Canta Celia Cruz (1956; “Celia Cruz Sings”), her songs with the group were compiled as full-length albums. In addition, Cruz headlined Havana’s Tropicana nightclub in the 1950s. After the Cuban Revolution of 1959, Havana’s nightlife all but disappeared. Along with the other members of La Sonora Matancera, Cruz left Cuba for Mexico and then the United States, eventually settling in New Jersey. Success came after Cruz became identified with salsa, a Hispanic dance music that evolved from musical experimentation with Caribbean sounds. She re-created herself for a younger generation of Hispanics by singing in the Latin opera Hommy and by recording updated Latin classics for Johnny Pacheco’s Vaya record label. Before long, Cruz emerged as a central figure within New York’s vibrant salsa scene. With a voice described as operatic, Cruz moved through high and low pitches with an ease that belied her age, and her style of improvising rhymed lyrics added a distinctive flavour to salsa. Maybe because She was Black and had two loves in her life her country “ America” and “France”. Through her music, her determination and aura she continues to be one of the most important pioneers of all time. Her impact goes far beyond the world of stage. Baker was an activist, fighting racism through her work with the @naacp and participation in the March on Washington. She called the 12 children that she adopted from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds her rainbow tribe. She also fought for the French Resistance during World War II. I was lucky enough to meet with one of her sons Jean-Claude Baker over a decade ago in New York. He was in charge of the @chezjosephineny restaurant. I was touched by the fact that there was a place in New York with so much memorabilia about her. What really inspires me in Josephine is her resilience as a Black Woman and her determination to do all the things that she set her mind on throughout her life. Now mind you she did so while Racism and Violence against Black bodies was unbearable. This month in Sennheiser history – September 1968: We revolutionized the audio world with the first-ever open-backed headphones, the #HD414. For the first time ever, ears could hear in a way that they are accustomed to: open and free in space. The sound can travel to the ear drum more naturally and clearly than in closed models. Not only was the HD 414 exciting for its advances in sound technology, but was the first headphone to feature bright colored foam ear pads (blue, red, green, orange and yellow). The first 10 years of production, the headphones had a grey headband with colored ear pads but a few years later, we changed the design for a black headband and the famous yellow ear pads. Its no surprise the HD 414 triggered an absolute boom in headphones sales. Even today, the HD 414, which has long since gained cult status, is still the bestselling headphones in the world, selling more than 10 million units to date. The open-back principle has also become a staple in the development of high-end headphones. Fun fact: prior to launch, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser asked our sales team for a forecast. They were not totally convinced of the headphone, so they calculated 500 pieces per year. That didnt dissuade Professor Sennheiser who decided to produce 5,000 pieces as he truly believed in the HD 414. He was right. In the end we sold 50,000 units in one year. In 2011 Chris Greive and I created our first Edinburgh Fringe show, PassionFlower, exploring songs from Tom Waits to Radiohead to Billy Strayhorn, all songs of love, lost and found, all with flowers in their titles. I’m not sure that I know precisely what it means to believe in love, or to be a true romantic, and in 2020 those words get even harder to decipher through our present hellscape. I do know that I hold love as a highest human value, even as it’s the most quixotic and enigmatic of virtues. _ I gave myself permission with this album to be embarrassing, to be pathetic, to be uncool, to be uncomfortably real, to be desperate and confused and naively wholeheartedly hopeful, despite piles of evidence that could easily result in cynicism. _ It feels weird putting out an album of love songs right now, and at the same time I know that we need music so intensely these days. We need to be reminded of what is beautiful and tender and hopeful about our species. I hope that this album can be a source of uplift for some of you, and for others a source of commiseration when you’re feeling alone or rejected or attacked by waves of hopelessness. _ True Romantic is out now, I hope it’s helpful.
