I know this painting has now become somewhat famous in Canada, however for those unfamiliar, its called The Scream. Its by Kent Monkman, a two-spirit identifying Cree individual, who often uses old Eurocentric art styles as sardonic tools to express the historical indigenous experience in Canada. With no ability to assemble due to Covid, its apt art for Orange Shirt Day. On a normal Sep. 30, school children would’ve gathered in class at some point to learn of the inhumane church-run resident school system in Canada, and how to honour the lives of those who were subjugated. They’d learn about its cataclysmic role in the cultural & mental genocide attempt on First Nations people. For many of them, Orange Shirt Day serves as their first foray into Canada’s systemically racist history and its stumble towards reconciliation. The irony of calling it ‘history’ for kids. The last residential school in Canada shut in 1996, 24 short years ago. And as critical as some of these new curriculum standards are, theyre still 10 yrs old. Disconcertingly, teachings of indigenous affairs for most adults who grew up in public schools like me were scant, if not revisionist. Nary a mention of some dystopian alternative school system, that’s for sure. Taught was that the bright red uniforms of Mounties were symbols of national pride. Omitted was their role in the abduction & forced separation of indigenous children from their parents. Taught was that John. A. MacDonald was our first prime minister. Omitted was that he said this: “Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training industrial schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white men.” Considering us adults won’t be receiving mandatory instruction on this subject anytime soon, incumbent on ALL non-indigenous Canadians is to actively use their free-speaking privileges to ensure conversations about Canada’s disgusting resident school system and their impact are never publicly concealed again; privileges that 150,000+ children & their families absolutely never had. - @j.smolensky on Instagram

In 2019, we served over 65,000 students with free guided tours of our museum. 2020 has been quite a different story. In response to the pandemic, weve modified traditional tours and field trips, translating them into digital platforms in order to continue to serve students. On this day 233 years ago, the United States Constitution was signed following four months of deliberation in the Assembly Room of the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. Of the 41 present delegates, 38 signed the document (and one signed on behalf of an absent delegate). The Constitution was signed by representatives from twelve of the thirteen original colonies — Rhode Island did not send delegates to the convention. On the day of the signing, Pennsylvania delegate James Wilson delivered a rousing speech on behalf of eighty-one-year-old Benjamin Franklin, urging the delegates to support the new Constitution despite the impossibility of devising a perfect system of government. Although the Constitution was signed on this date, it did not become legally binding until it was ratified by nine of the original thirteen states. New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify on June 21, 1788. Elections were held that fall and the new government under the Constitution officially began on March 4, 1789. The Constitution predates the Residence Act of 1790, which established a federal district near the Potomac River as the location for the new national capital and, eventually, the President’s House. Only one of the original signers of the Constitution later became a resident of the White House. June 25-26, 1876. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and over 268 men of the 7th US Cavalry Regiment were slaughtered in the Battle of Little Bighorn by Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes near Little Bighorn River, Montana. The Natives hoped by winning the battle Americans would leave native land for good. Instead the death of Custer as well as the 7th made the American public outraged, and the vengeful US military brought the Sioux tribe to their knees by 1877. All Sioux land had been annexed by the US in the Agreement of 1877, and placed Native Americans in reservations ending the Great Sioux War of 1876.
