It’s #MansardMonday! Few and far between in Reno, UNR has some exceptional examples. Morrill Hall / 1885 Morrill Hall was the first building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. A three-story (plus basement) “Second Empire”-style edifice, the building was constructed in 1885-1886 after the relocation of the University of Nevada from Elko to Reno, a process that began in 1884. Relatively few Second Empire-style buildings remain in Reno, making this a rare local example of this particular type of Victorian architecture. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 12, 1885 and the building was ready for occupancy by March of 1886. Designed by Reno architect M.J. Curtis, Morrill Hall was built for the sum of $13,500 and originally housed the entire State University until the Agricultural Experiment Station (1889) and Stewart Hall (1890) were built. Neither of those remains standing. Originally, the basement of Morrill Hall was divided into four rooms, with space for the janitor, storage, assay furnaces, quartz crushers, and workshops. The main floor contained the Principal’s office (for the head of academics), a reception room, the Board of Regents’ room, a library, museum, assayer’s office, assaying room, weighing room, lavatory, and gymnasium. On the second floor were a large lecture hall and two classrooms, and on the top floor, two large apartments, a general assembly room, and an armory. All instruction was provided by two professors. At the time it was built, Nevada was little more than a collection of rough mining camps and railroad towns. The new University hall symbolized the determination of the people of Nevada to provide educational opportunities for themselves and their children. The building was named after U.S. Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, author of the 1862 Land-Grant College Act that made the founding of the University of Nevada possible. Throughout International Underground Railroad Month, we will be sharing story maps recounting the journeys of freedom seekers who sought refuge in Boston. Our final story for the month is that of Anthony Burns, who escaped slavery in Virginia and came to Boston. However, in May 1854 authorities arrested Burns, which sparked major protests, a failed courthouse rescue, a military takeover of downtown Boston, and, ultimately, a return to slavery by the federal government. Eventually freed by Boston abolitionists, Anthony Burns attended Oberlin College and became a minister. Follow the remarkable story of Anthony Burns through our interactive story map: https://www.nps.gov/articles/-god-made-me-a-man-not-a-slave-the-arrest-of-anthony-burns.htm #UndergroundRailroad #UGRR #NPSNetworktoFreedom #UGRRMonth #AnthonyBurns #FreedomSeeker Image Source: Library of Congress https://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2003689280/ Image Description from Library of Congress: “Print shows a portrait of the fugitive slave Anthony Burns, whose arrest and trial under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 touched off riots and protests by abolitionists and citizens of Boston in the spring of 1854. A bust portrait of the twenty-four-year-old Burns is surrounded by scenes from his life. These include (clockwise from lower left): the sale of the youthful Burns at auction, a whipping post with bales of cotton, his arrest in Boston on May 24, 1854, his escape from Richmond on shipboard, his departure from Boston escorted by federal marshals and troops, Burnss ‘address’ (to the court?), and finally Burns in prison.” - @boafnps on Instagram

Robert Hooke was #onthisday in 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wright. Hooke was a Surveyor to the City of London and, in partnership with Sir Christopher Wren, created the design of The Monument, which took six years to be completed, from 1671 to 1677. Hooke worked with Wren on the design of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Montagu House in Bloomsbury, and the Bethlem Royal Hospital. They were keen astronomers, which is why The Monument was built to also serve as a Zenith telescope. 🔭 Hooke died on 3 March 1703. No authenticated portraits of him survive. 🔗 Click the link in bio to learn more about our history. ©London Metropolitan Archives, City of London. #TheMonument #OTD #GreatFireOfLondon #CityOfLondon #History #Heritage #RobertHooke #DrRobertHooke #SirChristopherWren #London #LondonTogether #OurCityTogether #VisitLondon #VisittheCity #LondonArchitecture - @visitthemonument on Instagram

May 30, 1806. Future President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, duels Charles Dickinson in Kentucky after Dickinson accused Jackson of cheating on a horse race and insulted Jackson’s wife. In the duel Dickinson would shot Jackson in the chest, and Jackson’s shot would kill Dickinson. The wound Jackson received would heal but the pain would stay with him for the rest of his life. This is one of many duels Jackson would participate in. Some estimates believe that Jackson had done 5 to 100 different duels in his life. _______________ #ushistory #americanhistory #history #usa #american #america #tagafriend #tagsomeone #tagaperson #duel #jackson #horseracing #horserace #killed #kentucky #frontier - @ushistorydaily on Instagram

Johnson invested money to make substantial improvements to the park including, lights, sidewalks, a Memorial Fountain and an Archway Monument. Johnson also spent his own money for the maintenance of the park. • • In 1956 the Cal Johnson Recreation Center was built in the park where it still stands today. - @beckculturalexchangecenter on Instagram
