But, to stay ahead of the curve, here’s Mo while still fitting out at New York Navy Yard on 23 July 1944. This view is from her quarterdeck looking forward towards Turret 3; note the distinctive patch of horizontal camouflage in the foreground. ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system. In the book, which is intended to be a real hymn in honor of the most beautiful coral sea in the world, the encyclopedic information and the personal experience of the author merge in a unique fresco. Folco Quilici was born in Ferrara in 1930, the son of Nello Quilici, historian and journalist, and the painter Mimi Buzzacchi. For many years, Folco Quilicis name has been connected with the relationship between man and the sea, with films like Blue Continent, The Voyage of Tanai and Brother Sea. He has also written several novels, published both in Italy and abroad. Folco has been a photographer since 1949, and has put togethe a photographic library comprising over one million colour and black and white images. In 1998, he was proclaimed Great Master for creative excellence by the International Photo Contest.
