The last days of Zeenat Mahal: Zafars favorite wife! Begum Zeenat Mahal, the favorite wife of Bahadur Shah Zafar, spent her final days in exile in Rangoon. She, along with Zafar, was made to stay in a square building made of woods containing four rooms- one for Bahadur Shah Zafar, the second for her, and the other two for the family of two of her sons. After Zafar died in 1862, suffering a paralytic stroke, the British government granted her a monthly stipend of Rs. 120. She remained in detention for another 4 years. On 16 June 1866, release orders were issued for her with the condition that she would continue to stay in Rangoon. Her stipend was also increased to Rs 250 per month. Towards the end of her life, after continued requests citing her old age and satisfactory moral character, her stipend was increased to Rs. 500. Zeenat Mahal became an opium addict in Rangoon- her intake being somewhere around 10 grams per day. She had a constant complaint of indigestion causing severe colic attacks. In 1884, she suffered an acute attack and remained ill till November. Never fully recovering, she complained of severe pain on 8 July 1886, and ran high fever for five days continuously, causing her many sleepless nights. On the eighth day, the pulse began sinking and on 17 July 1886, she breathed her last. She was buried alongside Bahadur Shah Zafars grave in accordance with the wishes of her daughter-in-law, Shah Zamani Begum, and grandson, Jamshed Baksh. The Chief Commissioner gave a grant of Rs. 1000 for her funeral. “Did you know that Ethiopians trained Lions to capture the soldiers of the enemy and fought side by side with Cheetahs, bees, elephants and lions? Ethiopian soldiers with their fighting lions. The Ethiopians went to war with dangerous animals and insects such as bees, wasps, lions, elephants or cheetahs trained to capture the soldiers of the enemy camp, which enabled them to win all the wars of colonization against them and to be the only country in the world to have never been colonized. At the battle of Adowa Ethiopian warriors skilled in sword fighting called Shotel destroyed the invading Italian soldiers in hand to hand combat. Photo by @eva.colomer The Lobi belong to an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. Starting around 1770, many Lobi peoples migrated into southern Burkina Faso and later into Côte dIvoire. The group consists of around 180,000 people.Lobiri is the name of the language spoken by the Lobi people. Lobi dwellings are characterized as large rectangular or polygonal compounds known as maison soukala. They are spaced well from each other and are composed of a single vast mud banco wall and a small entrance. An entrance to a Lobi house is a relatively recent development. At many houses, there is a ladder made from a large, Y-shaped tree trunk with notched steps, which lead up to the roof where inhabitants may access an interior granary and their own rooms below. Access to individual sleeping quarters is also available inside. Only the tyuordaarkuun (or head of the household; there is no chief in Lobi society) can give permission to enter the house. The roof is broad and flat and forms a terrace which provides a lookout point but can also be used for sleeping in the dry season. Domestic animals have their own space, and water is gathered from a well or the river. The rooms inside a Lobi house are very dark, and the size varies in relation to function. Each wife has a room for herself and her children where meals are prepared. Large earthenware jars used to hold water or other personal belongings are often stacked up against the kitchen walls and are a testament to the owners economic status. Jealousy has ruled Wakapikas life. He has always played second fiddle and this drove him to take destiny into his own hands. The Himba are great users of Witchcraft. An Omiti or spell can be cast and it is only a matter of time before these devastating spells work their magic. Wakapika was alway jealous of his brother. He was a well respected man who loved his family and loved to socialise. This jovial life bought him many friends and in turn many wives. His village grew as did the number of his children. More children allowed his livestock to also grow so in turn so did his wealth. Visitors were always welcomed as a good time was always to be had. This all ate at Wakapika, and drove him to the Witchdoctors place. With the required price paid the Witch doctor got down to work, an Omiti was placed. With Himba life being what it is, it was not long before gossip began to spread and word was finally heard of Wakapikas evil plan, he wanted his brother dead. Many months passed and nothing happened, but soon the curse would take its toll. His brothers health began to decline. A year later he was found dead. Wakapika was then free to take what was now rightfully his, his brothers village and his herd of cattle. His brothers wives knew their misery was born by Wakapikas greed and some soon moved away. Today you can find Wakapika sitting in his greed, his village falling to ruin with every passing day. - @benmcraephotography on Instagram

We admire the mission of Toolbox Initiative, a volunteer-based, non-profit organization and are pleased to be contributing to and partnered with their cause. Toolbox Initiative collects new or gently used jewelry tools and delivers them directly to hardworking jewelers, primarily in West Africa.  Due to the impact of Covid-19, jewelers who relied on income from tourism are struggling. There is no social safety net, and most of the people in need have little or nothing in reserve. To help in these times, along with providing tools and supplies, founders Matthieu Cheminée and Tim McCreight, are also sending small cash donations to help them buy food and water for their families. Tim advises the response has been overwhelming gratitude.    To learn more about Toolbox Initiative, and how you can help, please click the link in our bio or visit their website toolboxinitiative.org - @gesswein.jewelry on Instagram

••• Gandhi is a 1982 film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Horse racing is common, but have you ever heard of horse squeeze? During the Dragon Boat Festival, the most important activity is horse squeeze, as the horse racing track in the Shui Village is very narrow and can only accommodate two or three horses abreast at the same time. On the one hand, the rider must ensure that he is not squeezed out, and on the other hand, he must find a way to edge out other riders off the horse and reach the finish line as soon as possible. Therefore, the game is named horse squeeze. This custom is also a manifestation of the fighting spirit of the Shui people. - @liveinguizhou on Instagram

Meet Mashe Kaimana. Mashe is a highly skilled basket weaver in the Village of Xakao. She belongs to a basket making cooperative with other women; baskets are a part of farming life in the Okavango Panhandle. They are used traditionally for storing seeds, for carrying goods, and for winnowing grain after it has been pounded. Weavers use palm fibers and source their dyes from plant roots, bark, and sometimes mauve-hued fungus found in sorghum husks. Each basket requires intricate weaving and can take weeks to complete. The patterns are either abstract or symbolic of the local environment and wildlife. As an elephant economy emerges in the Panhandle, perhaps more and more baskets will begin to reflect coexistence between people and elephants 🇧🇼🐘 📷: A. I’ve been craving Ethiopian food the last few days which got me thinking of my trip to Omo valley and my friends there. On my third day in the August heat of Southwest Ethiopia, my brother Melak took me to see the Kara people where we met his friend Shoma who welcomed us into their village and treated me like family. I slept on a cow skin that night under more stars than I’d ever seen and woke up to a poisonous spider crawling up the inside of my leg. I didn’t sleep well the rest of the night and woke up before sunrise to have one of my favorite photo shoots of all time with Lujenka. Here is a sunrise kick from that morning and a group shot from later that day. Miss you Melak, Shoma, Bordo, Guya, Marinka, Siya, Lujenka and all your little friends ❤️ . . . . . . . . . #ethiopia #omovalley #indigenous #karatribe #karotribe #theafricanlens #africanamazing #igs_africa #african_portraits #loves_africa #everydayafrica #faces_of_streets #ig_respect #worldstreetgeneration #streetleaks #ig_global_people #people_infinity #friendsinperson #top_portraits #portraitsforfun #thestreetphotographyhub #bonny_faces #lamedumonde #humanity_shots - @markusjarrow on Instagram

African Union leaders in 2012 decided to establish a continental free trade area by 2017 whereby the agreement requires members to remove tariffs from 90% of goods, allowing free access to commodities, goods and services across the Continent. The free trade area is the largest in the world in terms of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organization. 1.2 billion people with a combined GDP of $3.4Trillion will be the market covered by AfCFTA. As of 2017, Intra-african imports as a % of Africas total imports was 13%. Intra-african exports as a % of Africas total exports was 16%. $132 Billion is the value of Intra-african trade which is only 14% of Africas total trade. The UN economic commission for Africa estimates the agreement will boost Intra-african trade to 52% by 2022. The brilliant Nigerian potter Ladi Kwali (c.1925 - 1984) working in her studio: undated photograph. (If you know who shot it, do let me know.) For the latest episode of Bow Down, I absolutely loved talking with the renowned Kenyan / British ceramic artist Magdalene Odundo about her admiration for Ladi Kwali, who taught her in the early 1970s at the Pottery Training Centre that was established by Michael Cardew in Abuja in the 1950s. Ladi Kwali’s portrait now adorns the Nigerian 20 Naira bill - she was the first woman artist to be featured on currency in Africa. Magdalene explains that even now, after almost 50 years, she feels that Ladi Kwali is looking over her shoulder when she’s creating her ceramics. Despite the fact that they spoke different languages - Ladi Kwali spoke Hausa, and Magdalene Swahili and English - they had a productive relationship that revolved around demonstration, laughter and occasionally dancing with joy if a pot was particularly successful. - The Peruvian Hairless Dog, or Incan Flower, is a native dog to the region. Having warm skin to the touch, it has and is used for its medicinal properties, much like a hot water bottle. Evidence of their remains has been found in many pre-hispanic archeological sites.

Pictured here is the genesis of all your favorite Alaffia Authentic #AfricanBlackSoap products. Our recipe includes potash (ash from local plants), unrefined #sheabutter and unrefined palm kernel oil. It undergoes the process of saponification with ingredients cooked for six hours, resulting in the rich golden brown color you know and love. The final step is to place the black soap in the sun for three weeks to cure. This heritage recipe is an all-in-one staple in West African households and we’re delighted to share it with you. Handcrafted with love and respect at our #AlaffiaVillage in #Togo! ❤️ #FairTrade #EthicallySourced - @alaffia on Instagram

Family has always been a complex topic for me. Growing up in Florida, much of that family was scattered across tiny, swampy towns or across the Atlantic in the burning heat of Brazil. If you’ve known me for any span of time, you’ll know that I’ve also struggled to speak Portuguese and feel confident after some tough years of awkward bullying. But this past week, I’ve been so blessed to grow that family here in Brazil, an adventure that included: // @betaborgen graduating from medical school!!! // beautiful days by the beach in Vitória // being searched for drugs by the military police // meeting nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts // riding a horse and not falling // learning some Brazilian country tunes from my 75 year old, long lost uncle Valdomiro // eating at least four lbs of the best damn beef i’ve ever had // AND DOING IT ALL IN PORTUGUESE 🇧🇷 Lucky as hell to have made it this far. Hyped to hit 27 this week with a beautiful family that’s bigger and stronger than ever right behind me. - @serfs_uppp on Instagram
