Its not my place or interest to be nutrition police on IG, but I do want to make sure my readers dont get sucked in by these.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are a few warning signs youre reading a post that doesnt hold any nutritional weight:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - The claims sound outrageous⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - The majority of an accounts focus is on the value/harms of a single nutrient/food⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - They are staunchly pro or anti supplements⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - They dont cite sources (or when asked, point to a single book or expert)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - They provide info out of context⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - They use words like always or never in most of their posts⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - The post definitively says too much/little of this nutrient/food is without-a-doubt why youre experiencing xyz symptom⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If *one* concept is driving all of your food decisions, thats when you know you need to back off a little and zoom out. Dear International Student, Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement rescinded last weeks guidance modifying temporary exceptions to online courses. This reverts the rules governing F-1 students back to ICE Guidance issued in March 2020. The March guidance allows students continuing in their program to remain in Active status in SEVIS if they participate in all online course work, whether they are in the United states or overseas. It does not apply to new or initial students who are outside the United States. While this will be relieving news to many students, please be aware there still remains the possibility of the government re-issuing more restrictive guidance in the future. Students should prepare for the likelihood that in-person or hybrid courses will be required in the future, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic improves. As such, students should continue to remain informed by checking your SacLink email regularly for updates from IPGE, and directing questions to your ISSS advisor as they arise. The inter-relationship of sensory stimulation, cognition and movement is an area of aging & wellness that is often overlooked. Despite this, research has shown that decreased sensory awareness both internally and externally often precedes cognitive decline in adults. This decreasing sensory perception is referred to as body awareness or body literacy. A great example of how sensory and cognition are linked in movement has to do with our ability to dual task - or essentially do 2 things at the same time. One subconscious (movement) and the other conscious (decision making). The inability to maintain a conversation while walking is a marker for future falls in older adults, or observing people walking while they perform a secondary task (dual-task paradigm) has become the accepted way to assess the interaction between cognition, gait, and risk of falling. Purpose: This study aimed to determine how varying protein intakes, including a new tracer-derived safe intake, alter whole body protein metabolism and exercise performance during training. Methods: Using a double-blind randomized crossover design, 10 male endurance-trained runners (age, 32 ± 8 yr; V˙O2peak, 65.9 ± 7.9 mL O2·kg·min) performed three trials consisting of 4 d of controlled training (20, 5, 10, and 20 km·d, respectively) while consuming diets providing 0.94 (LOW), 1.20 (MOD), and 1.83 (HIGH) g protein·kg·d. Whole body protein synthesis, breakdown, and net balance were determined by oral [N]glycine on the first and last day of the 4-d controlled training period, whereas exercise performance was determined from maximum voluntary isometric contraction, 5-km time trial, and countermovement jump impulse (IMP) and peak force before and immediately after the 4-d intervention. Results: Synthesis and breakdown were not affected by protein intake, whereas net balance showed a dose-response (HIGH MOD LOW, P 0.05) with only HIGH being in positive balance (P 0.05). There was a trend (P = 0.06) toward an interaction in 5-km Time Trial with HIGH having a moderate effect over LOW (effect size = 0.57) and small effect over MOD (effect size = 0.26). IMP decreased with time (P 0.01) with no effect of protein (P = 0.56). There was no effect of protein intake (P ≥ 0.06) on maximum voluntary isometric contraction, IMP, or peak force performance. After negociating with the local chief who was dressed in the most bizarre attaire possible ( a sort of military jacket and matching cap) , we agreed to camp next to the houses. The curiosity was mutual, obviously. Slowly, slowly came the children, then some older boys and some women, too. They were as fascinated by our “houses” which were ready in 10 minutes, as we were by their looks. Amazing experience. The next morning, just as I peeped out of my tend, I caught them standing there, as if they had been waiting for me all night. The Karamojong or Karimojong are a Nilotic ethnic group. They are agro-pastoral herders living mainly in the north-east of Uganda. Their language is also known as Karamojong or Karimojong and is part of the Nilotic language family. The main livelihood activity of the Karamojong is herding livestock, which has social and cultural importance. Crop cultivation is a secondary activity, undertaken only in areas where it is practicable. Due to the arid climate of the region, the Karamojong have always practised a sort of pastoral transhumance, where for 3–4 months in a year, they move their livestock to the neighboring districts in search of water and pasture for their animals. They spent time with bus drivers, King County Metro Staff, riders, and transit-lovers alike. It was 1975 the first time that I was introduced to this procedure as a young nurse. The sweet, beautiful girl was only a couple of years younger than me and I was horrified! As I was prepping her for surgery she recited to me the reasons that it was being done. She said that it would stop the growth of unwanted hair on her face and body, her skin would become lighter and she would be more appealing to a future husband. What? This poor girl did not have any idea what was being done to her. Now, I am even more shocked and, yes, angry that a procedure like this is still happening to girls! How? It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of @gbrlegacy founder and chair, John Rumney. 💔 Whether you had known John for a minute or a lifetime, he had a unique ability to fuel the fires in you that made you want to do great things, for yourself, for others, and of course for our amazing planet that he found so much joy in. 🌎 He was selfless beyond measure and would always put you and your needs well before his own, because if you were in his presence or thoughts, you were the most important person in the world. If John believed in you, then you were unstoppable! John LOVED the natural world. Every little detail was fascinating beyond belief, and he inherently understood the processes that drive the systems we take for granted from local to global. 💨 🌊 🌳 He also understood he was part of those systems and for them to stay as beautiful as when he found them he was going to have to do everything he could to protect them for everyone to enjoy forever. And that he did! John dedicated his life to our Great Barrier Reef. To him, the reef was family, something to be cherished beyond measure, a marvel of nature so rich and abundant in life it had to be seen to be believed. John started, was part of, or chaired countless committees, attended meetings at every level, lobbied our politicians, appeared in and coordinated countless documentaries, and most importantly was a leader and a trusted voice in all reef-related matters. 🐠 🐋 🐙 John was admired and respected in so many circles because of his integrity and honesty, because of his drive and ambition to simply do the right thing, his ability to work with anyone and everyone, and because his wants and desires were never for his own personal gain, but always for others and the world we live in. John was recognised for his endless contributions to the Great Barrier Reef and with both an Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for the @douglasshirecouncil , as well receiving the @australiangeographic Lifetime of Conservation Award and was humbled by these enormous gestures. The first onset of delirium due to exhaustion and sleep deprivation typical to ocean rowing is often experienced as hallucinating the sound of barking dogs. I often tried to understand what causes our brain to choose this sound in particular and I never managed to find a scientific answer but I found a poetic one: Just like mad dogs are rolling foam from their mouth, so are the waves at Beaufort 10 winds. To me, there is no difference in any of this cannibalism. Perhaps, eating livestock is even crueler since whales had freedom until they get killed, but livestock never did. Some people may say, whales are smarter, so we need to protect them. Livestock animals are intelligent too, and either way, that should not be a measurement of the value of lives.Some people may say because whales are declining its numbers, there needs to be more protection. But deforestation for maintaining livestock is seriously harming our ecosystem and causing many more species to go extinct. Currently, every five minutes, someone, somewhere in the world is diagnosed with MS. There are now 2.8 million people worldwide who have multiple sclerosis, according to the most extensive global study to date. The Multiple Sclerosis International Federation’s most accurate estimate yet shows that there are at least 1 in 3,000 people living with the disease. The Atlas of MS reveals that the number of people living with MS has increased in every world region since 2013. Although better counting methods, more accurate diagnosis rates and population growth are just some of the factors behind the rise, an increased risk of developing MS cannot be ruled out. The neurological condition, which on a global scale touches at least twice as many women as men, affects the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms vary widely from person to person, but can include blurred vision, tingling sensations, dizziness and fatigue. Despite common misconceptions, MS is not just a disease that affects adults. The global study reveals that there are at least 30,000 under-18s living with MS. Although this is the most extensive worldwide study that maps and counts MS, there are still gaps in the global evidence. The MSIF calls on governments, health professionals, patient organisations and others to improve collection of data on MS. Only by doing this will the true global burden of MS be visible. Laut untuk semua, memang benar adanya, termasuk laut untuk rasa rindu. Hal yang paling dirindukan saat ini? Jelas mereka, anak-anak nelayan diberbagai tempat yang pernah saya kunjungi, yang saya percayai layak untuk menjadi orang hebat dikemudian hari. Walaupun, ketika ke sekolah mereka harus berjalan kaki dan naik perahu berkilo-kilo meter jauhnya, nyatanya tidak menyurutkan semangatnya. Walaupun, mereka belum pernah melihat banyak hal tentang kemajuan, namun mereka punya cita-cita untuk melihat dunia luar. Banyak hal yang bikin rindu dengan anak-anak ini, berebut kue usai mengaji setelah magrib (sampai ada yang nangis, tapi habis itu anaknya tertawa), lomba renang sambil mengumpulkan sampah di laut, ataupun ketika mereka mengajak bermain saat saya baru saja menarik nafas karena baru tiba. Tapi begitulah anak-anak ini, dibalik kebandelan mereka, begitu menggemaskannya mereka saat rame-rame nginap di posko/basecamp kami dan tak mau disuruh pulang. Dibalik hitam dan asinnya kulit, betapa manisnya mereka saat datang membawa ikan yang banyak ketika mengetahui kami hanya makan mie dan telur, katanya kasihan (semoga produsen mie dan telur tidak tersinggung yak). . Dibalik rambutnya yang kuning atau merah menyala (karena matahari), begitu membuat terharu saat anak-anak memeluk (sambil menangis), dan menyerahkan surat yang digandeng dengan kado-kado kecil (ada kertas bergambar, kerang, batang tumbuhan, dll) ketika saya dan tim harus pulang. Keberanian, Ketulusan, Keceriaan dan Kesetiakawanan adalah pelajaran begitu bermakna yang anak-anak ini berikan.
