Is it possible to be a self-portrait artist and not think about your body? Ive come as close as it gets, I suspect. Ive weighed roughly the same since I was 15 and rarely thought about my body in images. But then I realized: thats not exactly true, Ive curated my body in photos. Ive taken hundreds of photos where I thought I looked bad and just didnt use them. Ive been lucky to not have to think a ton about it because society deems my body nice...petite, curvy... But all of those words are incredibly harmful, and as a self-portrait artist, Im ashamed of how much Ive curated to fit into those categories (I dont edit my body in photos but I do curate). Id love to tell you I havent done that. I did it without really thinking about it. Ive told women: take pictures of yourself and however you look is fine! And I meant that wholeheartedly. All the while not having to truly worry about societys impression of me, because I knew deep down that I would be deemed fine...because Im white, slender, curvy, petite. I gained a few pounds of weight recently. You may think, so what? And thats the right attitude. So what? I looked at pictures of myself that I took the other day and, out loud, said ugh!. What extreme lack of respect for the body and for myself. I was ashamed of my reaction. Nothing about my body is gross. Nothing at all, with weight or without. So: Yes! for fat on your thighs and cellulite, for an extra curvy waist line or a short, strong neck. Yes! for strong arms and a full face, for a muscular back or a wide one to shoulder everyones demons. I am an advocate for body neutrality - how you feel about yourself has nothing to do with your appearance. Larger conversation: how do we convince buyers and appreciators of art that all bodies make great art? Requiring transparency when an image is altered? Buying more art featuring people whose bodies havent been as widely accepted? Having open conversations? As my body changes over time, and I continue to photograph myself, I want to be held to a higher standard. To choose images to share that are right for the story and the message, not for body praise. Mon monde daprès sinscrit dans ce nouvel apprentissage. Je viens de terminer une première formation florale complète ce mois ci. Une expérience intense au rythme soutenu, ponctué de jolies rencontres dhorizons divers , de partages bienveillants, de fous rires à se sentir novices en la matière, de moments démerveillement à découvrir la magie des végétaux. Être en apprentissage minvite à sortir de ma zone de confort artistique puisque la fleur demande une maîtrise subtile des techniques, une appréhension délicate des volumes, une sensibilité à la composition des couleurs à travers les formes des fleurs. Je prends conscience du chemin méticuleux que cela exige, la gymnastique des gestes, la persévérance et la patience sont au cœur des enjeux de lartisanat. Toutes les fleurs de lavenir sont dans les semences daujourdhui. ***End of an Era *** Spent some time last week decommissioning Tiny Telephone SF, and it was very weird and sad seeing the studio all bare to it’s bones. Had to remind myself of all the time spent behind these boards making so many beautiful records with so many amazing musicians over the past 10 years. I learned so much so working in this space, it really changed the way I think about engineering. Not to mention completely opening the path for me to become a full time engineer / producer. Beyond grateful to @johnvanderslice for keeping it open over the years. AND for graciously passing the Neotek on to @_meernaa_ and me, which we’re moving down to LA to start our own studio. 🙏🙏 TT Oakland is still going strong and is overflowing with killer gear. Video Shoot for @wavesvienna festival 10.-12.9.2020 + XA Award Nominiation We are nominated for the XA - Music Export Award this year, an initiative by @austrian_music_export, SKE Fonds, @radiofm4 and @wavesvienna, which is going to be awarded at Waves Vienna Festival. We would have played there in person, if Corona hadnt made it impossible to make an International Showcase Festival like that happen. So as the festival cant take place as planned, theres going to be a video screening of all the bands especially filmed for the festival. Our 30 minute video that we filmed in St. Ulrichs Church in Vienna, will be screened on 11.9.2020 in WUK Hof. “Is this where it begins or ends?” I have edited maybe 5+ images and have hated them all. That’s the thing about creativity, it can’t be forced. I wasn’t expecting much from this photo because this photo had already been 3 other edits before becoming this one. I was just playing around with the image in photoshop when I thought of the character falling onto a blank page. Finally, an idea I was excited about! I have been having a very rough time lately because I haven’t been creating as much as I used to. Sometimes I don’t feel like a photographer at all. But what I need to remember, and maybe I’ll remind someone else who is struggling too, you don’t stop being an artist because you’ve hit a creative block. You’ll never stop being an artist. It’s who you are. Creating is fun and sometimes we put too much pressure on creating that it becomes the enemy. Don’t make art the enemy. Also, not every piece you put out needs to top the last piece you put out. Just make something! ❤️ I also wanted to quickly remind everyone that my gallery opening at Art Share LA is this Saturday October 19th from 6-9 pm. And it’s free! I’d really love to see you all there. I have a few people telling me they will be there for sure and just know it means the world to me because this is a huge deal!! Объем в кадре📸 ⠀ Как создать объемную фотографию? ⠀ ✅Научитесь видеть свет, наблюдайте за ним, изучайте. Как меняется свето-теневой рисунок, в зависимости от времени суток, как он ложится на модель...Поставьте модель, сделайте пробный кадр ... а потом еще 100 кдров, поворачивая модель и переставляя...(желательно учится на творческих съемках, конечно☺) ⠀ ✅ Используйте правила композиции! Они всегда помогут в построении кадра. ⠀ ✅ Дополнительный объем даст воздушная перспектива...ее сложно поймать в естественной среде, но на помощь придет дым-машина или вейп. Есть свое волшебство в использовании воздушной перспективы, кадр наполняется какой-то магией🥰 ⠀ ✅ В постобработке мы можем все эти эффекты усилить: прорисовать объем техникой Dodge&Burn, добавить блики, лучики, туман и т.д. ⠀ Кстати, мне нравится иногда добавлять лучики. Я делаю это через плагин Tiffen-Dvx3 (сохрани, чтобы не потерять) ⠀ Но вы должны понимать, что объем можно усилить в постобработке, но не нарисовать! In 2018 I had three surgeries to treat cancer with the final one ending a long and painful journey of unexplained infertility for my husband and me. That summer I also had an incredible lineup of wedding couples I was working with and thankfully throwing myself into their joy became a needed emotional life raft. We bought our then uninhabitable house in August and it felt like the whole year was spent working while physically healing, managing my health, and our house remodel. So when 2019 began and I was depleted, Chris and I talked about a creative reset—things I could do just for me to help my creative heart. I went to Paris with @darcybenincosa, Florida with my sweet friend @lexiafrankphoto, and Nashville for @thehybridco to connect with industry friends and learn from others I admire. I’m incredibly grateful for a life partner who lets me go and adventure in the world, who encourages me always, who understands the creative journey enough to push me to create whenever and wherever. I participated in a creative editorial shoot at Hybrid Co. led by @sophiekayephotography and @eastmadeco. Photographing beautiful Marchesa gowns and whimsical florals was a complete treat!
