Do you have trouble identifying your “signature” colours? The key is picking up on the colours you are already using. Try this: Have a look at your last 10 paintings. What is the colour (or colours) that seem most obvious? The one that you have used to the best effect, the one you have used most often, that appeals to you the most? It doesn’t have to be the biggest or brightest. Now, consider how you might use that colour in a new way: . 1. Place a small dab of the colour next to your focal point, or 2. In your painting, deliberately place it beside an opposite colour on the colour wheel, or 3. Make it the biggest colour or use it in an unexpected way... yes, paint that tree crimson! . I discovered I was using orange flecks as a highlight colour so I decided to paint the entire background orange in my still-life above. . Identifying the colours which speak naturally to you is a great starting point for building a signature palette and than expanding it throughout your work. Try it! 🎨 - @theskilledartist on Instagram

Technically, the last day of summer isn’t until September 22, so we have a few days to go! 🍃 Let’s enter this scene from the summer of 1914. Gustav Klimt vacationed in Weissenbach, a village on the south eastern shore of the Attersee in the Salzkammergut lake region of Austria. Klimt lodged at the forester’s house and painted it twice that year. In this bucolic picture, he reveled in the interplay between the open and closed windows, which offer tantalizing vignettes into the house and beyond. A lush blanket of ivy covers the façade. The overall green tenor of the painting is punctuated by vivid spots of color introduced through blooming flowers in the garden and window boxes. Klimt’s passionate zeal for nature sustained him, and he found succor from the stresses of daily life and the requests of demanding clients through immersion in natures revitalizing bounty. – Summertime is intended for fun and games, and we are delighted to introduce the “Forester’s House in Weissenbach II (Garden)” Jigsaw Puzzle just in time for the season finale. Create your own memories as you join Klimt in remembering that fond summer of 1914 by piecing together the lush flora, breezy open windows, and relaxing ambiance with our new puzzle. Available online at shop.neuegalerie.org. – Gustav Klimt, “Forester’s House in Weissenbach II (Garden),” 1914, oil on canvas. Neue Galerie New York. Tales of the Archives- Pearl City 🍍”Old Time Fun”. 📻 By the 1930s-50s, most Pearl City residents were employed in August Butts green bean fields which once covered much of what is now “West Boca.” It was a hard life and even the children worked in the fields during harvest time. Many Pearl City residents also lacked running water and electricity; things we take for granted today. Nonetheless, they knew how to enjoy themselves. Walter Dolphus recalled: “Well, the kids always played ball; and I never forget years ago of a marble range . . . was right in the center of Dixie Highway, and now you can’t even walk across it. A car would pass by probably every four or five hours. So that’s where we used to make up our marble range, right in the middle of Dixie Highway between 11th and 12th Streets. Right in the middle of Dixie Highway.” Amos Jackson had this memory: “We used to celebrate the 20th of May here [that is Florida’s “Emancipation Day”]. That’s the day that we were told that the slaves were freed. … The 20th of May was a big day to us. We’d have big baseball games, picnics on the beach and Collin Spain used to carry his juke box, or piccolo as we called it, on the beach; and he had a generator, and they called it a dynamo at the time, that would provide the electrical service for the box. We used to have music on the beach, swimming, ice cream, and sandwiches. Later on in the day we would have baseball games.” Irene Demery Carswell recalled the pleasures of a box supper: “Well this is boxes that the ladies would fix with food, and the men would buy these boxes. This was one of the recreational parties that they had. The men would buy the box maybe for fifty cents or seventy-five cents at the most. And then, for instance, if I made a box and you liked my box, I had this box all decorated with crepe paper, etc. And sometimes there’d be big boxes and little boxes, and they had fried chicken and potato salad and maybe some collard greens, or some homemade rolls, or maybe made a cake. You put enough for two in the box. For instance if you bought my box, you and I would sit and eat whether we were married or not. #continuedincomments - @bocahistory on Instagram

Weve been in Europe and the UK for centuries. 🙏🏾 Ive done a lot of self-education over the years on the Black presence in Europe and the UK. But Ive had my eyes further opened recently thanks to @peter_brathwaite s reworking of artwork featuring Black people across history (check his insta out) and reading more books like David Olusogas Black and British. Black history IS British history - we need to change what we are taught in school. Check out @theblackcurriculum who have free resources and are reimagining Black British history in schools. And Nate Holder who has plenty of resources/articles on restructuring music education to be inclusive, diverse and factually correct on his website www.nateholdermusic.com. The professionally recoloured photographs on this post were created by @tom_photografix. I look forward to learning more about Black history before we were enslaved. Our history didnt start at slavery and didnt start at the Windrush - always more to learn. . . . . . . . . . #blackhistory #britishhistory #art #reworking #nationalgallery #blackbritish #windrush #recolour #history #blackcurriculum #diversify - @cassiekinoshi on Instagram

Today, we reflect on the 100th Anniversary of Womens Suffrage. To commemorate this important event, Bowne House has published an article about a long line of strong, independent-minded women in the Bowne & Parsons families who lived in the home since 1661. They are remembered for their significant social and civic contributions to the Flushing and greater New York City communities. Additional information about Bowne & Parsons women can be found in a slideshow entitled On the Path to Freedom, prepared for our Juneteenth celebration and available on our website. To read the article and view the slideshow, click on the link in bio. Image: Bertha Parsons working at Mayor Walter Bowne’s secretary desk circa 1940, seated in a Parsons family Chippendale chair. ‘Sandy and Her Husband’ 1973, by Emma Amos, recently acquired by @clevelandmuseumofart The artist has included her earlier self-portrait ‘Flower Sniffer’ on the dancing couple’s wall. Listen to the brilliant curator and designer @duroolowu discuss Amos’s life and work in the latest episode of Bow Down (link in bio). If you’re in Chicago, you have a few days left to see Duro’s exhibition ‘Seeing Chicago’ @mcachicago From their website: ‘Nigerian-born British designer Duro Olowu is internationally recognized for his womenswear label launched in 2004. Characterized by unique fabrics, evocative patterns, and impeccable construction, the London-based designer’s garments are informed by his international background and curator’s eye. Olowu’s multinational and multicultural viewpoint has translated into wildly popular platforms and projects from his dynamic Instagram account to his revelatory curatorial projects in London and New York. Now Olowu turns his cosmopolitan eye to Chicago. Drawing from the city’s public and private art collections including works in the MCA’s collection, Olowu curates a show that reimagines relationships between artists and objects across time, media and geography.’ Bow down #emmaamos #duroolowu - @bowdownpodcast on Instagram
