Today’s @TheSTMagazine cover featuring Matt Rudd who’s been looking at why middle-aged men are so often unhappy. What a great idea for an image from the team at the magazine @russocphoto and @danbiddulph - a dream commission. Awesome styling by @olliversharp, and amazing digital manipulation by Peter Crowther helped me bring it all together. When Russ asked me to make it rain inside an umbrella my mind instantly started racing… thoughts of Rene Magritte dominated, this is an idea he would have liked. But then reality dawned on me, I’m not a painter, I’m a photographer, I need to actually make it rain inside an umbrella. Thankfully I have a very hands on father and we spent a great fun afternoon rigging up an umbrella with tubing so that it would actually rain on Matt. Then a few days later I found myself at Matt’s house connecting that umbrella to his garden hose. The weather gods had given us the perfect background - a few clouds in an otherwise blue sky. Magritte was smiling down on us. So we turned on the tap and made the most of it. Massive thanks to Russ for this incredible commission, to Matt for being happy to get cold and wet without moaning, to @oliver.mayhall for assisting so brilliantly, and to Matt’s family for all their help in making this happen. It’s hard to write about your friends’ friends. I’d never met @curtisleejamie, but had heard about the actress/author/activist/icon from my pals Michelle and Chad. And this feature was *supposed* to be a one-page story and a 30-min interview. Half an hour became two, one page became four, and by the end of our wiiiiideeee ranging discussion, I had a new meditation book, dinner reservations at her go-to spot, and had been persuaded that Jamie had, in fact, invented Instagram. And was it challenging to make different scenarios and photograph yourself? Felix -I did. I’ve practiced photography ‘since I was born.’ My main subjects are non-humans, landscapes, nature mortes, architecture, so it was challenging to try fashion type photography. I enjoyed it. Replica - Was it interesting to do something which you were more in control of visually? Let’s say that in a normal fashion shoot, I am a player, and here I was, the writer too. What is really interesting with Saint Laurent men’s clothes is that you can really go thru a lot of different male/masculinity visuals; lots of different scenarios can come from it. I like to play with standards of masculinity to show a wider view on the male body/stereotypes. Replica -Some of the images look like they are inspired from Fassbinder’s masterpiece - ‘Querelle’, based on Jean Genet’s novel, with Actor Brad Davis. Is this film an inspiration for you? And maybe even some of your work? Felix - Of course, the whole works of Genet, and Fassbinder too, are a great inspiration to me; the way they are showing male sensibility is precious and rare in society these days, sensibility that’s the word. Twenty years ago, Cecil Chao, a notoriously committed bachelor, caused a sensation when he claimed to have dated 10,000 women, but that was nothing compared to the media uproar that ensued in 2012, when he publicly offered HK$500 million, and later doubled the prize to HK$1 billion, to any man who could convince Gigi, once described by the South China Morning Post as “the most famous lesbian in Asia”, to marry him. Thousands of potential suitors tried, and Sacha Baron Cohen even proposed turning the episode into a movie, but Gigi responded by laughing the whole thing off as “a bit comic and tragic at the same time”. . (They announced their separation last March.) . “A lot of people say that I’m brave and I’m courageous, but I think he felt somehow that his worldview was being threatened,” Gigi says. “It was his way of doing something to ensure that his daughter is loved—albeit, in his kind of thinking, love equals money. Maybe not everyone would agree with that one, but I guess for him, part of his legacy is to make sure that his only daughter is respected and not ridiculed.” .
