Billingham Signal Box, 2020. Originally controlling the lines, the signal boxes were our apart of our original train system. Sadly as of Feb 2021 most of them will be decommissioned and knocked down bar the occasional industrial line and boxes that are repurposed. I’ve been hopping into a bunch of different AA meetings this week, mostly because I’m working on getting comfortable with expressing my struggles, thoughts and victories. something we discussed in one meeting was “playing the tape forward”, essentially when you feel like drinking, play out the scenario that will come during and after drinking. and I really have to say, I don’t think people are giving themselves enough credit for Not drinking during this whole quarantine/ pandemic. Like I was playing the tape in my head and I could see it. with how easy it is to get alcohol (they deliver it straight to your damn door!) now, I ~could~ put in PTO at work for a week, order a shitload of booze, and just binge drink. and I would, I can’t even lie to myself and say “it’ll only be one drink”. like who would know, honestly? it’s wild. • • But in seeing this play out in my head, I realized that for the first time in idk how long, I Don’t want to do that. like that’s not what I want my life to look like, that’s not what I want to put myself through, that’s not what I want to put my loved ones through. so again, I make the choice for myself to not drink again tonight, or hopefully any time in the future. • • #soberaf #sobriety #soberbabes #soberlatina #soberbrowngirls #soberlife - @skapunkforever on Instagram

Reminiscing the carefree and precious weekends spent with their family and friends at the bazaar, many recall the famous shops and streets of the time. One such shop that is frequently mentioned by former residents of Lahore (now in Pakistan) is the Bhalla Shoe Company or Bhallay di Hatti. The shoe company was started by Dhani Ram Bhalla, a trader and a well-known social figure in pre-Partition Lahore. Belonging originally to Bajwara in district Hoshiarpur, Dhani Ram initially came to Lahore to start a leather business, which he converted later into the Bhalla Shoe Company. Slogans such as Boot Bhalley de laidiyo sanoo, roz diyarhi, kavan tuhanoo (Buy me Bhalla’s shoes, I request you every day) came up to publicise the store and in no time, Bhalley di Hatti became a leading shoe store in the city. In his book Lahore - A Sentimental Journey Pran Nevile speaks about his first few memories of Lahore, which includes one of Bhalla Shoe Co. when the city was visited by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1929. Pran describes the procession of the newly elected president of the Congress who was showered with rose petals through his journey and came to a stop in front of Bhalla Shoe Co. where he was garlanded by its owner Dhani Ram Bhalla. Various other political leaders and scholars of the time such as Rabindranath Tagore also visited Dhani Ram and his store during their visits to Lahore. However, at the time of Partition, when violence spread all over the city, Dhani Ram Bhalla and his family were forced to leave their precious shoe store and beloved Lahore and migrate to India. My pick this week is Shipbreaking #10, Field Proof from Pentimento— a series that was born of a minor disaster, but produced one of my favourite images. I’ve always been interested in looking at other people’s contact sheets and Polaroids; an insight into the photographer’s process and a chance to see how they visually work their way toward the final image. For his field studies for the Shipbreaking series, Edward decided to use Polaroid Type 55, which produces both an instant black and white Polaroid print and a (rather delicate) negative. Despite taking all of the seemingly necessary steps to preserve and protect the film, when the negatives were put into storage after his return from Bangladesh, they became stuck together. No matter what we tried, the film couldn’t be separated without damaging it. Pieces of emulsion peeled off, sticking to the neighbouring sheets, and those field studies took on a whole new life. Out of that misfortune, they became more than a step in the process in the Shipbreaking series. I only say this because it all seemed like a thousand minutes inside of a second, that things were popping off with people meeting each other at these aspiring events developing within New York City’s wreckage,” Lee Quinones says when remembering how he first met Keith. “I actually met both Keith and Kenny Scharf at the same time on one of the floor levels at the famed Times Square Show in 1980. I was there with both film director Charlie Ahearn and Fred Brathwaite aka @fab5freddy and as we were chatting about concepts for the show, someone, and it might have been Charlie himself, introduced us. By this time, my mega Handball court murals Howard the Duck and The Lions Den on the Lower East Side were the destination outposts for most if not all Graffitists from around the city. Keith was more than aware of their existence and was ecstatic that we were meeting.” Quinones’ early works are largely influenced by politics. He describes his influences on this work and others: “The human condition in itself is complicated and politics just adds to the confusion and contradictions, so these always tend to find their way into my paintings, especially the early works off the subways that hinted at the US-USSR cold war and the post Vietnam war experiences.” This work, Tameless Horses, depicts a seemingly peaceful flight of helicopters which “signify either the exhausting exitus at the end of a conflict or the ambitious and yet blinded faith of entering one,” Quinones says.
