Aborigen. Así se referían a los pueblos originarios en Ecuador. A varios les dije que “a” significa “sin” y que “borigen” proviene de origen. Por lo que llamarlos aborígenes era asumir que no tenían ningún origen, lo que es falso. Pero a nadie le importó demasiado. Con esta idea de conocer los orígenes fuimos con Trifo a hablarle a las indígenas que hacía cuatro días permanecían inmóviles en el mismo escalón de una casa abandonada. ~ -Hola, ¿cuánto cuestan los aros?-, preguntamos. -Un dólar-, contestó desnudo el menor. Llevé dos pares y comenzamos a sacarles charla. ~ Nos contaron que para llegar a sus casas había que atravesar la selva durante cuatro horas en canoa. Por eso, se quedaban varios días para vender artesanías y volver a sus hogares con arroz o fideos. La mayor era la que más parlanchina, pero no le entendimos una palabra porque hablaba kichwa. Al parecer, algo entendía. Cuando Trifo decía algo, ella reía. ~ Les pregunté si podía sacarles una foto. -Saque sus fotos, así muestra el Ecuador a sus amigos y vienen a visitarnos-, me contestó una de las mujeres y luego preguntó -¿quieren ir a nuestra comunidad? Les cobramos 50 dólares la noche y les cocinamos tres comidas-. Le agradecimos la oferta y la rechazamos explicando que ya nos íbamos. Carrizo Plain Conservancy was awarded a $2000 grant from REI to support removal of old, non-functional fences within Carrizo Plain National Monument. This work has been ongoing for several years, and recently has been led by a partner nonprofit organization, Los Padres Forest Watch (LPFW). Thank you REI for your gracious support of the conservation effort in Carrizo Plain National Monument, which seeks to eliminate old, non-functional and sometimes hazardous barbed wire fences which are a relic of past farming practices there, but which today are a danger to wildlife and to people. The REI grant will be used to further the removal effort primarily with volunteers, probably this fall, when we hope that the COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings will be gone or at least relaxed. In October 2017, we partnered with LPFW and volunteers to remove a significant length of old fencing on a property near Soda Lake which we had purchased and donated to the Monument. Prior to March we still believed that the project we helped initiate in Mataquescuintla would see a continued uptick - more roasters signing up, more producers with good coffees available, more retailers shouldering responsibility in sourcing, better prices paid not just higher prices charged - but COVID knocked it all down and we all scrambled to secure our businesses and livelihood. None, more than the producers. While coffee circles here seem to be moving on and making the best of it, the focus on producers is sadly lacking. This year has tested everyone. And, if anything, its good to know who your friends are. Alex Reynoso: We awaited the 2020 harvest season with great anxiety & expectations that it would be the best season of all, all producers have our hopes that business with Canadian roasters is a way out to a better future for several reasons that make our work very difficult. I will mention the most important ones, firstly, climate change, this generates many diseases in coffee plantations, secondly, monopolies installed by large merchants in the region and the country, this generates that the prices of coffee in the market local are terribly bad, for these reasons all our expectations for this season were set with the Canadian roasters & marketers who have taken on the task of helping us at the end of 2019 we had everything ready since the coming season would be the best, They would buy more coffee & the payments would be faster, this made us happy in all aspects because also through these businesses the stories of the fight we carry out day after day against the mining criminal San Rafael are made known. Escobal, owned by Pan American Silver, a Canadian company that causes us a lot of trouble in every way one can imagine. In this perfect season, Covid-19 appeared & we imagined that in a country like ours it would be a total disaster. All the producers asked me the question, How much will this virus affect us in business? My answer was always, I hope there is little that affects us. Day 10 of my 100 wishes personal diary challenge. I’m feeling clear and grounded, ideas that are repeating are getting put into other lists and printed out to place on my mirror. What always happens in my last wishes is wishes for humanity, wishes for the loving people of Bali, wishes for my friends, my family and wishes the rise of good things for good people all over the world. One of my wishes has been to take a stroll down the beautiful old towns of Ibiza and in this photoshoot with @may.may I received a wish I didn’t think I’d experience this year. Truly anything is possible, keep wishing, keep expanding your container and keep over riding your old patterns with new positive ones. Taking on a 21 day challenge for yourself whatever that looks like for you, is a step in the right direction.
