Located in #Qikeshu in northeast #Beijing, #Masquerade is located within close proximity to the city’s thriving 798 Art Zone which is home to several movie and photography studios that are housed within old brick factories. Designed by @123architects, the 480-sq-m space sees the transformation of an existing two-storey industrial building in the district, into a photography studio. The walls of the entrance lobby are vaulted, forming a domed space whose curved framework contrasts the existing industrial ceiling which is exposed above. The reference to Isolde at the bottom of this Aubrey Beardsley drawing is likely to Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde. The opera premiered at the Königliches Hof- und Nationaltheater in Munich on June 10, 1865 and it was widely performed throughout the 1890s. It was enormously successful and Beardsley knew it well. Although he typically worked in black and white, in this piece Beardsley employs a striking bright red to depict a famous scene from Act 1 of Wagners work. As revenge for Tristan killing her fiancé and then tricking her into saving his own life, Isolde asks her companion, Brangäne, to prepare a death potion. Isolde confronts Tristan about his conduct and tells him that he owes her his life. Tristan first offers his sword but Isolde refuses; they must drink atonement. Against a red curtain, symbolic of bloodshed and death, Brangäne brings in the potion that will seal their pardon. Tristan drinks, knowing it may kill him, and Isolde takes half the potion for herself. The potion seems to work, but instead of death, it brings relentless love. Isolde asks Brangäne which potion she prepared and Brangäne replies, that it was not a death poison, but rather a love potion. The work of a masterful Tibetan artist whose name, like nearly all others, we will never know! Creating works like this in the absence of ego generates positive karma and provides an important ritual tool for a practitioner or practitioners. This painting was lent to @vmfamuseum from the @asianartmuseum, for the exhibition “Awaken.” The exhibition catalogue is worth picking up. In the meantime here is the text from their wall label: “Padmasambhava as Guru Drakpoche Tibet, circa 1525 Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Gift of the Connoisseurs Council, 1992.344 For Tibetan Buddhisms earliest Nyingma teachings to survive the era of Buddhisms near extinction in the region (850-1000), extraordinary intervention was required. Anticipating this period, Padmasamvhaca concealed the teachings in both physical locations and the minds of his students. These hidden treasures (terma) would be rediscovered at prescribed future times, whether unearthed from the ground or recovered front the minds of those disciples in subsequent rebirths. The dark red, winged deity embracing his blue consort at the center of this painting embodies one of those hidden teachings, recovered by Pema Lingpa (seated upper right) around the turn of the 16th century. Some shots of my latest installation in The Leonardo building in Sandton, Johannesburg. Commissioned by Legacy and The Trinity Session. Forged Leviathan 2017 - 2019 / Approx. 30m2 / Gold-leaf, animal bones Set into reflective black granite I have articulated my collection of found animal bones, collected and gold-leafed over a period of at least 10 years. These embellished bones from many different species become a fantastical beast. I pay homage to the sculptural perfection of each lifeless bone in relation to the next, a being is discovered in the imagination, did it once fly or swim or walk the earth? The gilded skeleton reveals a stark contrast of material - that which once held life is melded with that for which so much life is taken. I made this painting a few years ago right after the passing away of my father. The motif is inspired by the figure of Charon from the Greek mythology. Charon is the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the river Styx that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. Traditionally, Charon is depicted as an old man with a long beard standing on a boat, in this painting I rather wanted to represent him as a calm and handsome young man who is waiting in the entrance hall of a building. The River Styx is transformed into a red carpet which leads to several doors. On the back of this thangka, a golden inscription praises a text called Lotus Skull Rosary. This is the precise text from which the Guru Drakpocheys (center) visualization derives, and its composition is attributed to Padmasambhava (top left). But the Lotus Skull Rosary did not appear in public until the fifteenth century, when it was discovered by the lama at the top right of the thangka, Pema Lingpa. Adham Khan Being Thrown from the Walls of Agra, from the `Akbarnama, Adham Khan (1531 – 16 May 1562) was a general of Akbar. He was the younger son of Maham Anga, he thus became the foster brother of Akbar. In his fourth regnal year, Akbar married him to Javeda Begum, the daughter of Baqi Khan Baqlani. In November, 1561 Akbars favourite general Ataga Khan, was appointed wakil (the prime minister), replacing Munim Khan. His appointment displeased Maham Anga. On May 16, 1562, Adham Khan accompanied by a few ruffians burst in upon him as he sat in the hall of audience and murdered him. Adham Khan then rushed to the inner apartment, where he was caught by Akbar, just roused from sleep by tumult. Akbar replied to Adham Khans explanation to palliate his crime by striking him down with a heavy blow of his fist. Adham was thrown down twice from the roof of a one storied building whose height was about 10 feet (which was possibly the reason why he had to be thrown down twice) by royal order and put to death. Akbar himself broke this news to Maham Anga, who made a simple but dignified reply that he did well. Oggi, per la mostra “Out of the Blue, Viaggio nella Calligrafia attraverso Alcantara” vi raccontiamo due degli artisti che presentano le loro opere a Palazzo Reale. La prima è l’opera di Qu Lei Lei. Riempiendo la sala con un insieme di dinamici testi, l’artista cattura e re-interpreta estratti di fake news attuali attraverso tecniche calligrafiche cinesi, generando linee visibili o sfuocate che interagiscono con le proprietà di Alcantara. Antiche eredità culturali e forme originarie emergono e si confrontano così a nuovi linguaggi espressivi. L’artista Qin Feng invece (nella seconda immagine), non lavora su tracce a cui poi si darà la compiutezza di una forma, ma sulle immediate forme dell’idea stessa. Nessuna distanza tra il pensiero e il gesto primigenio. La spontaneità del movimento calligrafico sprigiona un’energia primordiale, esprimendosi nel principio filosofico Taoista del Wu Wei 无为 “agire nel non agire”. L’arte giapponese approdò in Europa nella metà del XIX secolo, quando, grazie alla restaurazione Meiji, il Giappone si aprì a nuove influenze; gli artisti del nostro continente, in particolare gli impressionisti e i pittori dell’art nouveau, rimasero affascinati dalle delicate raffigurazioni giapponesi, tanto da trarne ampio spunto per le proprie opere. Contemporaneamente, come spesso accade, prese avvio una vera e propria caccia al tesoro, nella quale i collezionisti cercavano di aggiudicarsi i pezzi più belli e rari: obiettivi molto ambiti erano le celebri stampe giapponesi. lovers-in-the-upstairs-room-of-a-teahouse Ukiyo-e – questo il loro nome in giapponese – significa letteralmente “immagini del mondo fluttuante“, con riferimento sia all’impetuosa cultura che li produsse, sia allo stile che, non prevedendo l’utilizzo del chiaroscuro, rende ogni scena quasi surreale. Gli ukiyo-e fiorirono durante il periodo Edo (1603-1868) ed erano destinati prevalentemente alla popolazione meno ricca del Giappone, dal momento che il loro prezzo contenuto li rendeva ottimi sostituti dei dipinti più costosi. I soggetti prediletti dagli artisti di ukiyo-e erano i paesaggi; soprattutto questo tipo di stampe entrarono nell’immaginario e nella memoria degli europei: ancora oggi tutti abbiamo in mente le famose vedute del monte Fuji o la Grande Onda di Hokusai. Altrettanto rappresentate, però, erano le scene di vita cittadina e, tra queste, un particolare tipo acquisì molta popolarità: quelle ambientate nelle case di piacere.Il “Tao dell’amore”: tutti i segreti dell’erotismo cinese.Questo particolare genere prese il nome di shunga, cioè “pittura di primavera“, un modo per indicare eufemisticamente il rapporto sessuale. Le persone coinvolte nei rapporti raffigurati dagli shunga erano generalmente una cortigiana (la geisha) e il suo cliente: il pittore li coglieva mentre erano intenti a sperimentare diverse posizioni, alcune anche molto curiose e ardite. Non si sa quale fosse lo scopo originario di queste realizzazioni, ma nel momento della loro massima fioritura gli shunga erano utilizzati dalle prostitute per illustrare i “servizi” offerti oppure per far eccitare il cliente. - @eroticsnake on Instagram
