At first it was more about poverty, but now I think it is mostly about piety. Millet made this painting as a commission for Thomas Gold Appleton, but for some reason he never came to collect it. After a while Millet decided to rework part of the painting and sell it to someone else. Originally, there were just these two people praying over a basket of potatoes they had harvested. It was then called ‘Prayer for the Potato Crop’. That title makes you think that they are praying for a better harvest, because what they have so far is not much. There is just one basket and a big bag on the wheelbarrow. But eventually Millet added the church tower in the background and renamed it ‘the Angelus’. That name refers to a prayer that catholics were required to say three times a day, at dawn, noon and dusk. Although in the 19th century it was usually at 6 am, noon and 6 pm. The prayer was announced by a bell that would ring in church towers. It would also be the end of the working day. So with that in mind, the painting is about the prayer at the end of a working day and therefore a pious moment. Apparently Millet himself said that when he had worked the fields as a child, his grandmother would always observe the Angelus so it was also a personal memory. The painting was sold and resold to several private owners, but even so, reproductions of it were also sold. Those became very popular as a religious painting. Many people commented that when they saw it, they could almost hear the distant bell ring. In fact, one of its previous owners, Jules van Praët, exchanged the painting for another Millet. When asked why he did that he said: “everyone thinks they can hear the nearby church bell tolling, and in the end, the constant ringing just became tiresome”. . The Angelus, Jean-François Millet, 1859, Musée d’Orsay, Paris. . #Potatoprayer #harvesting #barbizon #barbizonschool - @all.the.stories.of.art on Instagram

Summer Vacation: Take a hike! In his painting “Landscape”, Asher Durand depicts two figures enjoying the perfect summer day, taking a break from a walk in the woods. Upon closer inspection you will notice both men have brought along sketchpads, and are perhaps pausing at this spot to draw the world that surrounds them. These artists are deep in conversation, one standing and gesturing with his maulstick while his companion listens in rapt attention. Asher Durand (1796-1886) was trained as an engraver, and gained success as a portrait painter early in his career. His close friendship with Thomas Cole led him eventually to focus on landscape painting in the late 1830s. Both Durand and Cole were members of the National Academy of Design, with Durand eventually become its president. Cole’s untimely death in 1848 affected Durand deeply. Perhaps their friendship is memorialized in this painting; two artists enjoying a summer day, exploring nature and talking about art. The works of Durand and Cole are currently on view at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis @dixonmemphis in the AFA exhibition, “For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design” on view until September 24. Have you ever thought about what you would do if war broke out in your home country? Yesterday I spent the afternoon with photo-journalist Hazir Reka / @hazirreka listening to stories and looking through his archive. As a student Hazir would be on the front-line of protests in Kosovo documenting the fight against authoritarianism, by the time war had broken out he found himself at the centre of the bloodiest conflict Europe had seen since WWII. After the fall of Yugoslavia, Kosovo faced aggressive expansion from Serbian Forces. Villages were burned to the ground, civilians were tortured, raped and brutally murdered. Hundreds of thousands fled the country as Kosovo lay as a centre ground in a battle between East vs West. Following a NATO led intervention, and the deaths of thousands more, the conflict came to an end in 1999 and in 2008 they gained their independence. The country today still faces a battle to stabilise their democracy and eradicate Sectarian division but they are on the path to forge their own future. I don’t think anyone really knows what they’d do during a war, until they are in one. For many the fight will be fought with guns, but for Hazir, he fought with his camera. He, and others like him, expose the reality of war, they force us to watch and without them the Kosovo I’m standing in today, would be a different place altogether. Thank you to Mural Fest Kosovo for facilitating this visit. @muralfest_kosovo @void_projects #muralfest #muralfestkosovo #hazirreka #photojournalism #photograpy #kosovo #fifthwalltv - @fifthwalltv on Instagram

Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. - @worlds_painters on Instagram

Back in the 18th century when big parts of the world were undiscovered many explorers traveled the world in search of paradise islands with eternal sunshine and exotic - and erotic - inhabitants. Many painters joined the explorers and documented the encounters with the unknown which at the same time served as an illustration of western civilizational superiority. Among the travelling painters were William Hodges, whose works from several travels with the well-known Captain James Cook, can be experienced in the current exhibition Mythologies - The Beginning and End of Civilizations. “Mythologies - The Beginning and end of Civilizations” is about faith, hope, crises and revolution and about how the power of stories has created and changed society - from the Greek myths to today´s welfare society.

The exhibition is curated by @erlendhoyersten @lisepennington og @jakob_sevel Photo: William Hodges, A View from the Island of New Caladonia in the South,1777-78 ©National Maritime Museum Greenwich, London.

The weather in the coming days is expected to be warmer than usual and you will find us in the cool air conditioning in the museum. How are you spending your day? . Until you visit us, we invite you to look at a summer view from August 1886 by the painter Eugène Boudin in the painting Trouville, Les Parasols sur la Plage. . For over 30 years, Boudin has dedicated 300 paintings to beach sights. In most cases Trouville, a popular resort town in Normandy, where he used to spend his summer vacation. Boudin described the summer atmosphere and people in their fashionable periodical attire. Painting a very precise sky combined with upper-middle-class figures became him signature style of painting, which was later adopted by the Impressionists, led by Claude Monet, who was Boudins student and under his influence began to paint outdoors. . Dame Laura Knight — Spring (1916/1920). Oil on canvas. • Dame Laura Knight (1877 – 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain; her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. In 1929 she was created a Dame, and in 1936 became the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. Her large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1965 was the first for a woman. Knight was known for painting amidst the world of the theatre and ballet in London, and for being a war artist during the Second World War. She was also greatly interested in, and inspired by, marginalised communities and individuals, including Gypsies and circus performers. - @paintingsbywomen on Instagram
