September #shortdresshistorystory month for our school. STORY No.1 ‘My First Dress History Book’ - When I was 12 years old I decided I wanted to be a costume designer in the theatre. My first ‘book’ on the subject of dress history was due to the fact that both my parent drank huge quantities of Brooke Bond tea, so I could collect all the picture cards that came, one at a time, inside every packet of tea they bought. It is not surprising that this tiny book on British costume is full of good information because the texts were written by Madeleine Ginsburg, a founder member of the Costume Society and curator of textiles and dress at the V&A, who passed away recently at the age of 91 (obituary from Costume Society newsletter shown). Scroll through these images to see the back page of the book where ‘Things To Do While You Collect The Cards’ still offers some good suggestions and the ‘Selected Book List’ includes Janet Arnold’s ‘Patterns of Fashion Volume 1’.
