JOY DIVISION con CLOSER: un epitafio hacia la eternidad 🎧🌟🖤 Para cuando se grabó este disco histórico, en 12 dias durante marzo de 1980, la situación en el seno de JD se encontraba en un exasperante punto de dualidad: el grupo era una máquina sonora que se llevaba todo por delante, con una oscuridad y cuota parte de desesperación notable que lo hacía más morbosamente atractivo aún, y a punto de tomar el mercado norteamericano de un solo golpe con una inminente gira a bordo de su discazo debut Unknown Closer, lanzado sólo unos meses antes. Pero en paralelo, el estado de salud de su cantante con sus ataques de epilepsia y el pozo depresivo en el que se encontraba sumido -y la intriga que ese péndulo anímico traía consigo- lo ponía todo en duda no habiendo certeza alguna de solución de continuidad. En ese contexto tan poco proyectable los de Manchester grabaron Closer, dos meses antes de un suicidio que dejó pasmados a todos y que los obligó a una profunda introspección personal y profesional. Si Unknown Pleasures bucea en las nervaduras del alma y las deja expuestas a quien las quiera ver, Closer te empuja al frío cadalso de la muerte ya desde su excepcional portada, nuevamente a cargo de Peter Saville, quien diseñó esa profunda premonición en abstracto sobre la base de una fotografía de una escultura de la familia Appiani, del cementerio de Génova, sin haber escuchado nada del nuevo disco y obviamente sin adivinar la decisión final de Ian Curtis. Lanzado en julio del ‘80, el LP es tan lúgubre y bello como estremecedor, y forma parte de lo mejor que dejó el post punk como legado. Never Worse presents “The Bleakness” with its cinematic factory-like sounds, evoking a world dominated by machines. Shrouds delivers a dense sonic experience in “Death, The Only Equalizer”, by employing loud loops and ritualistic motifs. Closing the first cassette is Mesmer Trial and his track “Fused”, which guides us in a dark experience dwelling in malevolent ambiances and droning passages. The second cassette starts off with O/H, where they return to rhythmic-noise soundscapes with “Last Days”, which has an obsessive nature underlined by shrilling bass-lines. Donna Haringwey gives us “Invite”, an exercise in various rhythmic elements fused with punk-like vocals and riffing distortions. A Brutal Game follows suit with “Rehearsals 2018-2020” and its disquieting course based on reverbs and grinding sounds. Following the tragic death of George Floyd, the issues of systemic racism and oppression of African Americans in the United States have been brought to the forefront of the media, as they should have been a long time ago. It is a disgrace that the issue has not yet faded away, and seems to have only made minor steps towards the solution. Us, as members of the producer community, feel we can make strides of our own to help combat the ever so obvious oppression of African Americans in the United States. These people have in fact expanded our culture and brought upon us some of the most popular music genres to date, including blues and rap, or urban music. They have created the opportunity for all of us producers to do what we love to do. There is now doubt in any of our minds they will continue to shape the culture of not only Americans, but that of many different people around the world. Because of this, it is all of our duties to help combat the issue of police brutality in the United States. This however is not the only issue plaguing the African American community. An unfair justice system, mass incarceration, and limited education are all factors in keeping African Americans from equality in the United States. So, in solidarity with what this community has given us, and simply as good-hearted humans, we are pleased to ask you to donate to this Campaign Zero, an organization helping to combat police brutality in the United States of America. As long as proof of a donation larger than $5 is shown, a loop kit created by some of the most talented young producers in the industry will be given in return for your contributions. Dil To Pagal Hai, 1997 I was 2 and a half when I saw Dil To Pagal Hai. This film entered my unassuming subconscious and painted the walls in its own image. The next 20 years of my life, every creative urge, every life decision, every passion, every ambition, every bit of social interaction, everything would find its seed in this film. The process of unlearning and reeducation began a while back. Mostly Im just glad my parents didnt take me to watch Hero No. 1 or whatever the hell else came out that year. Its the little things im thankful for. This series is called Leaving A Mark On Films That Left A Mark On Me where l deface select frames from films and share my thoughts on how that film has come to shape who I am over the years.
