It feels like a lifetime ago, but back in 2019 the most epic Sabbath cover band formed in NYC consisting of Angel Deradoorian (Deradoorian), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Mick Barr (Ocrilim, Krallice), Greg Fox, and Brad Truax (Interpol). I went to see them pretty much every time they played. It was the type of pure fun that I am missing like crazy right now. The film “Queen and Slim” is the creation of Director Melina Matsoukas, born of a Cuban mother who was raised on the island, and migrated to New York at 10 yrs old. If you’ve seen Beyonce’s music video “Formation”, a solidarity love letter to New Orleans, then you’ve experienced her incredibly elegant eye behind the camera. . . This particular story (written by @lenawaithe ) takes place in the United States, with an African-American couple, played by Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther) and introducing Jodie-Turner-Smith. Both are running from law enforcement due to the accidental killing of a cop in self-defense. Their destination? Cuba. “Cuba represents a refuge for these characters,” notes the seasoned visual artist. .. . @remezcla writes: “Black unity, as the community’s greatest weapon against oppression, guided Matsoukas’ vision for Queen & Slim. She wanted to speak about the similarities shared among Turner-Smith who has Jamaican roots, Kaluuya who is of Ugandan descent, herself and black people at large. ‘I am a black Latina. My mother is a black woman from Cuba, and this film is to speak to the African diaspora. The business side of the music business in Jamaica needs to get fixed. A producer believes that when they hire a set of musicians for example The Roots Radics, pays them back in those times about $50 to $100 per musician to create a track, the producer believes he owns the musical composition just because he paid. That is not true the owner of the musical composition belongs to the people who created the music and not the producer who paid for the session that is the international law. The producer then turns around and registers everything 100% to themselves robbing the artist and the musicians of their performing writes money , royalties and their publishing. This has to STOP. The Jamaican government needs to protect the artist and the #musicians more. All the #dub #engineers also have to know their #rights, whenever you add anything to a track it doesnt matter if its a finger snap or a hand clap anything you add, you become a writer, and the new sound recording cannot be used by the producer without written consent, and the producer does not own the copyright just because its a dub track and he paid for the session. DOES ANYBODY WANT TO CHALLENGE AND SAY: Dub is not writing ??? The only way the producer owns the musical composition or the new sound recording is by way of contract that gives them ownership. If youre stupid and uninformed to sign a work for hire. I get asked by record companies all the time to sign work for hire and turn them down and the only reason they ask me to sign the contract is because their lawyers know that the #law requires them to have written permission to exploit the sound recordings / dub and work for hire is NOT VALID unless it is in writing that is The International Law. - @thedubscientist on Instagram
