Around this time last year, my normal was flipped on its head over a series of moments. And maybe that’s a strange thing to reflect on during a global pandemic. Staring at and scrolling on screens was leaving me empty and literally reaching out IRL was my remedy and now, in early 2020 in Seattle, WA, it feels like touching is the most fearsome thing we could elect to do. It’s funny how these things shift so quickly. A year has passed and I’m still here and I know that, bit by bit, our collective order will restore over a series of moments too. But I know you can’t rush it. As a small business, I’m hoping I’m resilient enough to weather this storm (you can have as many gift cards as you want!) so I can keep the doors open and continue documenting your brightest moments for many more years to come. After wildfires and hazardous air quality pushed back the start of school, it’s finally the first official day! I feel overwhelming gratitude for our new school community and the immense effort which went into opening for in-person learning two days a week. The protocols and care which went into this are profound and I’m amazed. I’m proud and it’s bittersweet and mostly I can’t believe these tall amazing kids are in second grade and kindergarten public school for the first time! May they feel welcome, have peace, safety, and make friendships in this valley we now call home. Whatever lies ahead I know they will flourish because of how kind and curious and brave they are. The community here has only had 15 total cumulative COVID cases. The school has a brand new ventilation system, will be doing regular testing, mask requirements, daily screenings, hand wash stations, and mainly outdoor learning under big tents with very small cohorts (Ellie is one of six kids in her class days). The other days of the week they will be home with me doing remote learning via a mix of my own projects and an online learning platform. The principal has emphasized a commitment to ‘go slow and go together’ and a core belief to continue making community based decisions. This has been a wild heartbreaking year but we are full of grit and gratitude and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us here. ♥️ - @laughclan on Instagram

God has been absolutely amazing in all that He has done when I thought all was lost, but He has redeemed the most broken parts of my life and blessed me with her and her wonderful 3 sons as well. I couldn’t ask for a more caring, loving, understanding, and godly woman to be my wife and in the life of my kids! She walked through such a similar experience as me and has astounded me in how graceful she walked through her experience and the strong woman she is today! So grateful for her and her patience and love towards me and Josie & Reuben! I can’t even begin to describe all that God did for us and to show us His will in our story and the bringing of us together and how undeniable that God has knitted our lives together. I started documenting weddings almost 8 years ago, and I can say with total honesty that in all these years, I’ve never taken this work for granted, nor have I grown tired of it. The energy and connection of each wedding day is astonishingly unique. All the elements (weather, light, time, space, emotions, etc) are out of my control and changing constantly, which is, for me as a photographer, exhilarating. The beauty, for me, is in the noticing. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for every celebration I take part in. My first wedding of the year was set for early March, which turned out to be the first weekend of the shelter. Our collective safety matters most right now, but I miss my work so much! I’m incredibly thankful for all my 2020 clients, who, in the midst of the stressful postponing and rescheduling of their weddings, have blown me away with their care and support. I don’t remember my best day of TV, but I do remember playing outside, building forts, climbing trees, collecting bugs, playing stickball, staying out till dark, breaking stuff, laughing, going on adventures, playing games, etc, and being tired at the end of the day. Grateful for this. Kids these days don’t know the pressure of wanting to call a girl on the phone and hoping her dad doesn’t answer. Now everything is streamlined right to the tiny palms of their hands. Tech is nice, but it isn’t character building. And now we have to fight through COVID... Welllll that got real, real quick. Mason’s first day went like this (read to feel better about your life): -His school device doesn’t work. His teacher said that was fine & I’d have time to figure out. -After what I thought was clear communication, I didn’t stress about his TWO assignments due today, or his two mandatory zooms. -Took Mason for a haircut. -Sent/delivered coffees to a few friends having Monday-ish Tuesday’s. Still thinking all was fine. -Received a voicemail from his teacher letting me know he was marked absent, and some other things that had my hormones in full send. -Kinley puked in the store bathroom after screaming about the other person in there having the stinkiest poops ever. Emphasis on ever. -Mason pee’d in our flower garden because he couldn’t make it inside...liar. Now we are about to go play outside & collect leaves because I only have 48 hours left with my 5yr old until he wakes up even more boy than little boy. Mase, stay resilient kid. 💖 . This is something I’ve agonised over for weeks, knowing that we will have to come out of lock down at some point! Young children cannot socially distance and it’s not fair to expect them to. I noticed that parents seem to interpret this ease of restrictions 2 ways: . 💕their kids can’t socially distance so they CAN’T see the grandparents . 💕their kids can’t socially distance so they accept a degree of risk so they CAN see their grandparents I felt like I was in the minority of still not allowing my kids to see my parents. I watched families around me and on social media share a wonderful weekend of reunions in the garden. Knowing that my boys absolutely adore my parents and would immediately be all over them, I just could not get over the fact that I would be breaking the rules. This situation has really made me think about trying not to compare your life and your situation with others. Every family has a different degree of risk: . 👨👩👦👦some families have adhered to lockdown for 11 weeks and been able to work from home . 👨👩👧👦some keyworker families have more exposure to high risk situations . 👨👧👧family members struggling with poor mental health . It took me 4 days of agonising and a good old heart-to-heart with a doctor friend to realise that this virus is not going away any time soon and we need to go on with life accepting some risk. We eventually decided that since my parents are needed to be our childcare when my husband goes back to full time work next week, and so we arranged a reunion garden visit. Yes, I felt guilty and selfish. I wanted to see my boys reaction to seeing their favourite people again. I wanted watch and feel everybody’s excitement and emotion. Rather than just drop the boys off on the doorstep on our first day of requiring childcare. Some families may need to “widen their bubbles” to include grandparents for various reasons, be that for essential childcare, mental health reasons or even for their own child’s development. Please remember everyone’s home situation is different and how they interpret and accept risk will vary. This can be anyone from their own parents to people who gain their trust in online forums, often by posing as children themselves. . Today, we would like honor the hard work of the Texas Department of Public Safety, specifically their Interdiction for the Protection of Children program. If any of you remember the huge Georgia trafficking ring bust a little while ago, those officers were trained by IPCs guidelines! They recently just celebrated their 500th rescue in Texas, and while they arent at liberty to discuss details as many of the cases are ongoing, they are fiercely involved in the battle against sex trafficking and provide training all around the country. As in the quote above, they want to emphasize that most victims are trafficked by people that they know, not strangers off the street. . Ayer me encontré con una escena que me dejó pensando, una mujer tirándole del pelo a su hijo, ¿sabes por qué?, corrió, sí, se emocionó en el pasillo del mercado y corrió, pero pronto regresó con su familia. No estoy juzgando su actitud, porque tal vez para ella y para tantos otros es una razón para quejarse y luchar con el niño...para mí sería un gran logro. Así es como yo querría que Lara fuera libre para correr y jugar donde quisiera. Sería maravilloso tener varios juguetes regados por la casa, porque ella jugó con ellos. Y si pudiera llamarme mami y no se fuera con otros porque siempre prefiere mi regazo, porque es un chicle de mami, sería perfecto también, pero tuvo que aprender en sus primeros días de vida que está sola (porque mami no pudo hacer nada para sacarla, fueron meses para que le dieran el alta) en una pequeña cuna en la UCI. Así que ella va con todos, o con cualquiera. Si pudiera dar un consejo a una madre tan cansada de la maternidad real, sería tranquila, pasará, crecerá. La maternidad para algunas mujeres es tan triste y dolorosa, así que agradece a Dios por la salud de tu hijo. Los niños felices gritan, corren, no se detienen, parecen tener hormiguitas en sus pañales ja ja ja, quieren explorar todo lo que les rodea, sean pacientes con ellos, enseñen mil veces si es necesario. Intenta no perder el autocontrol, cuenta hasta 10, bésalos, abrázalos, detente para escuchar sus increíbles historias. Aisle 15 was lit on New Year’s Eve! — 10/10 would recommend ringing in the new year by having a sleep over with your nieces and nephews. I mostly didn’t regret it. Alaskans love camping. Even if it looks like pitching a tent inside your parent’s grocery store. We stayed up past my bedtime, ate lots of sweets, and watched a movie until 2:30 am. I warned them that if they weren’t on their best behavior then the produce monster (aka me) would come out. She did. Like I said, I mostly didn’t regret it. Haha. I’m so excited to share the photos of the morning that Arden was born. @sarahculver is a dear person in my life - a friend and a fellow photographer. I photographed the births of her second and third boys. Thankfully, Arden was born just before COVID-19 came in full force to the US. Tom and I were about to go out for a date night when Sarah started going into labor - we walked into a restaurant bar and literally no employees were around. We sat there for 10 minuets then decided to leave, and right as we left, Sarah texted me to let me know it was time to come over! So that worked out just right lol. It was a long night of her laboring, and shortly after the sun came up, Arden was born. He is now just over 6 months old and his dark hair has turned to auburn - he is the sweetest tiny addition to this family. I am so exited to watch him grow up. One year ago today, Ian Richard Staal earned his angel wings after a brave battle with brain cancer diagnosed at age 3. Brooks and I were blessed to be in his presence the first day we arrived in Amsterdam for Brooks’ back surgery. I did a special photo session of Ian with his loving parents and adoring little brother. Ian was already an angel, meeting him and spending this special time with his family changed Brooks and I forever. It was one of his last coherent days, he passed less than a week later. The timing worked out so that I was able to photograph Ian’s funeral services, his life celebration. I believe in tender mercies and that God is involved in the details of our lives. My daughter once asked me why my stomach is fluffy and she actually felt bad for me. As if my chichos were a burden. *(chichos: love handles :)⠀ ⠀ I explained how my body was her home for 37 weeks and I could never be ashamed of my fluffiness. That I loved my large, strong legs, my fluffy middle, my wiggly arms. None of it embarrassed me. ⠀ ⠀ After my daughter was born, I stopped wearing a t-shirt over my bathing suit and my words were much kinder to myself. I never wanted her to think I was ashamed of my body... my strong body that kept her safe. ⠀ ⠀ I am my daughters first role model. Our daughters will watch us, and observe how we treat ourselves. Six. I haven’t even begun to write this and I already have a lump in my throat. Six years old is no longer my baby. You no longer fit lengthwise in the tub. I can no longer carry you from the car to your bed without the threat of a herniated disc. You join your own zoom rooms. You flit my fingers away like a teenager when I try to click links for you. You follow your google class schedule, command your own microphone, and even flirt with the chat feature. You never complain. Ever. You haven’t complained about the pandemic or that you were plucked from school one day and didn’t return. You had been so excited all year to play T-ball and had one glorious practice (thanks coach @lennyrosenfeld) and then uniforms were returned and the season cancelled. You kept your heartbreak to yourself. When Santa gave you tickets to Dodger stadium and instead of a game we went for Covid tests- you swabbed the inside of your cheeks diligently and looked patiently into the giant empty stadium. It was like you were silently saying “we will be back someday”. You’re one of the most energetically sensitive people I know and other-worldly. You have talked of past lives- of sleeping on the dirt, living through a divorce, being a girl. You have mentioned that we are all angels living in this thing called life. When I sighed about the pandemic and said that Covid sucked and everything was upsidedown you said “well that could be not true. We could just be living in a story and then it’s not really true. It’s just a story.” You don’t like to be pushed into anything. If it’s something you’re scared to do you demand to do it at your own pace.
