Vacanze perdute: Egisto Fabbri, “Casa rossa a Motrone”, 1913 (collezione privata). Ancora un dipinto che ci racconta di villeggiature perdute: la Versilia poco prima della Grande guerra. Egisto insieme al clan Fabbri era solito trascorrere i mesi estivi nella pineta di Motrone , tra il mare e le Apuane, forse in una semplice e solida casa rossa come quella raffigurata nel quadro. Lontana dalla folla e immersa nel parco ombroso. Egisto e la sorella Ernestine trascorrevano il tempo in compagnia di scelti amici, come John Singer Sargent, venuto a dipingere le Cave di marmo di Carrara. “Earth is itself a canted color-wheel, a cycle of vegetable, mineral, animal, and atmospheric accommodations to the earth’s passage around the sun. The segment, the turn of the earth, that corresponds to brown in the northern hemisphere is autumn. Consider, for example, the brown field in autumn, the stubble field. In climates where winter is cold, the autumnal field represents at once Nature depleted and Nature bountiful. There is something about the indeterminacy of brown that lends itself to such paradox. She is the matronly season, Autumn, comfortable in her warm landscape. Ripe Autumn can nearly be heard to sigh: Here will I rest a bit, my bounty is suddenly very heavy. Her lids droop. Her smile is pleasantly hazy. Her days are shortening. But the sun is delicious. Isn’t the sun delicious? Thoughts turn to elegy and apples. Try one of these, she says. Waiting for Her Man 30x40 A new piece headed for the C.M. Russell Museum Art in Action event. This one is a little different for me. Delivering a painting last year to a collector near Jackson Hole I happened across this sight. Immediately I pulled over the truck jumped out with the camera and commenced shooting. The clouds where putting on a display of hide and seek light requiring lots of shots. Looking out across the sage flats I was overcome with the vision of a native encampment and someone waiting. Charles Russell often worked that way and one never knows when the inspiration kicks in. Thats all it took and I had to paint it. Many people have remarked that my paintings display a fondness for tangled foregrounds, screens of foliage, and particularly for pendulous branches. They say, it looks Japanese. Experience at the lake, however, might teach them that such are typical of the wild Canadian woods; that vegetation obscured the view nearly everywhere, and that the tangle of growth is so thick that often an axe is needed to cut a way through. If they have kept to the beaten path, then they probably respect convention in art as well as in life, writes Walter J. Phillips in an unpublished manuscript titled Wet Paint from the 1920s/30s. Virtual Museum Open Day #InternationalMuseumDay #IMD2020 Notes from our Archive From the Gibraltar Directory of 1909: During the last twenty-five years the methods of travel near Gibraltar, which had previously remained practically unaltered ever since the Rock first came into the possession of Great Britain, over 200 years ago, have been entirely revolutionised. The construction of the road from Algeciras to Tarifa during the late seventies was the first real advance made, since it enabled wheeled transport to be employed for the first time between Algeciras and the railway near Cadiz. Before that period, the only means of communication between the Rock and the interior of Spain was by means of riding horses and pack animals. A yet greater advance was made when the Algeciras-Bobadilla railway was opened in 1890, whereby Gibraltar was for the first time placed in direct communication with the railway system of Spain and Europe. The railway has in its turn led to the construction of various roads such as that from the town of San Roque to the Station of that name and others from Algeciras to Los Barrios, &c., and slowly but surely, wheeled transport is being introduced into many parts of the country.
