Throwback to 08 when I was in-between S’cool Girls and Hammered Satin! I did a fun #junkshopglam DJ tour with Martin Axen of the Ark @_thearkworld :) Sweden 🇸🇪 and Germany 🇩🇪 were totally cool but I never made it to London! I got busted at customs, held overnight, detained and deported back to Sweden! Just for trying to enter the UK 🇬🇧 as an “illegal DJ” without a work visa! I tried to tell them it was only a house party and I wasn’t getting paid but they didn’t believe me. They found “evidence” of this flyer and my vintage 70s Singgin Piggins satin bell bottoms and platform shoes in my luggage as my “stage costume”. The oldest history and active culture of the valley and surrounding area, is that of the Akimel O’odham and our ancestors the Huhugam, often referred to as the Hohokam. The Huhugam, like the ruins at Pueblo Grande in Phoenix, built massive villages and village centers throughout the entire valley. The earliest irrigation systems date back to around 1500-2000BC. The era from 450AD to 700AD and about 1200AD was the height of population, innovation, canal engineering etc. After that time the ingenuity and intelligence of the ancestors had to reinvent themselves into what we now know as the O’odham cultures. The ancient ones designed and engineered (dug by hand) the most complex irrigation systems in this part of the world, with over 1,000 miles of canals for agriculture. Our ancestors not only established sustainable ways of life here, but stretched all the south past the Tucson basin and into what would now be called northern Sonora. Over time the culture and ways of living changed dramatically with climate and political structure, and often had to be reinvented. Eventually the culture would take that 180 degree turn. The Akimel O’odham of today are the descendants of that long timeline of history. So whenever anyway tells you Phoenix has no culture, or history, or that the ancient Hohokam “disappeared”, just know that all of that is false and is only from outsider, colonizer and institutional perspectives. In this revision of this design, Man in the Maze is an important symbol for the Akimel, Tohono, and Hia Ced O’odham. It sits above the Phx bird, because it’s a reminder our culture comes first. The land area known now as Phoenix, has an original name “Siiki/ S ki” which translates into the “land of many homes” or villages. There are variations of this, but if you consider the amount of ancient Huhugam villages that existed throughout the valley then it makes sense. FRACTURE DESIGN PROCESS As a band we always knew we wanted something pretty simple and iconic on a red background, we tried to stay away from something symmetrical which was weird for me as I’m a big fan of symmetry. The fact that there was going to be a lot of open space kinda freaked me out as I tend to go mad with detail and try to cover the whole canvas so that was a challenge in itself . The initial concept from @alieatsdrums was “ Being suspended in a moment, a point in time and bearing the wounds of that which came before you. Cleansing of ourselves/human race” . Straight away I had a vision of a figure in a levitation state “suspended in a moment”. You can see this in the very first sketch which was mega rough but I liked the composition. I took that rough sketch and brought it into photoshop just to see how it might look with the red background, from there I really started to invest in this idea . I developed this sketch further with more detail and played around with different variations of skulls to give it a more primitive look and fit the mood of the album. I had to have some sort of shape behind the figure just to break up the composition and balance but I wasn’t really sure what that was going to be at this point. I was always fascinated with the paranormal term “Ectoplasm” after seeing various horror movies and thought this would be a good way to portray the cleansing exteriorised from the figure . The lyrics “spears of light” caught my attention from the song Night Crossing and I decided to draw up a spear to go through the body and also create the mandala shape to sit behind the figure. Who knew you could do so much with one spear, the teeth were then used for the “Into Nothing” artwork . It was then time to start the final piece and slowly working on the figure. I wanted all the elements separate so we could play around with the composition for the final cover and booklet/merch etc which worked out perfectly.
