Tonight I’ve been having taste memories of foods from my childhood. The overbrined boullion in Lipton’s chicken soup, the sweet seep of frozen corn that’s finally thawed enough to taste, how toast with butter and jam will never taste quite like it did when Nan made it (I imagine it was magic, but it was probably the margarine). Food is central to my sense of family. It signifies comfort, attention, tradition and ritual, legacy. Love and meaning. It’s a refuge and a bond. Here’s a selfie I took fresh out the shower after a nourishing walk tonight where the only food I talked about with @jessecale was a Hot Pocket shaped like a breast, and photos of some meals I’ve made. I’d love to quit my day job. Please send me your most tasteful daddies. I’d make a great personal chef. 1. Spiced lentil stew. My Mum taught me. 2. Loaded lox on toasted bagels @cervezaprinceza brought in from her fav spot in Pittsburgh. 3. Dolmas with leaves I picked off the wild vine I keep forgetting is behind my garage. Dad loved them. 4. Cucumber and cream cheese sandwich like Mum says Nan used to make. 5. Big salad I made for @levillomed and @bryanvillo when I visited Macon in July. 6. Tuna rice casserole à la Mum. 7. A melt I made with spiced beef on a bad day that suffered from my distraction. 8. The no-noodle zucchini lasagna I made without a recipe that was so good I ate it all in one day. Margaret Hamilton, our green gal in the MGM movie, was also rushed to the hospital, suffering serious burns while she was filming the movie.
