This is my grandmother in 1950s Mauritius. For a black woman there at the time, access to education was a real struggle. My mother worked really hard to access a French high school based on merit, but migrating to France in the 1980s it was equally difficult to find a qualified profession. Despite this, my mother never taught me to fear any failure or rejection based on my origins or skin colour. Third generation and I am lucky enough to be one of the very few members of the mixed race and POC community at the Royal College of Art Fashion Masters program. Once I asked the Head of Marketing from a well-known British fashion institution at a diversity-oriented talk if there was anything done to increase the number of POC in Fashion and Design schools. It is apalling to think that, when the fashion industry has embraced diversity on the catwalk, the reality is far from being mirrored backstage. . There arent small diversity issues, the representation of all origins in fashion is a guarantee of cultural wealth, creativity and original individuals who share their specific experiences. If changes are made at this level, it will impact everything else. . Maybe you will have to work harder, with more dedication and perseverance, but drive does not have a colour so dont let others or institutions decide for you. . There is a war happening everyday in Skid Row and it’s happening between the street residents and the ever growing rat infestation. I nearly fell over backwards when Chelsea pulled this gun out of her duffel bag: “Wanna see what I just got?” She said, “I just bought this so I can shoot rats.” Turns out it’s just a very intimidating pellet gun and for Chelsea it’s an extra line of defense for the rodents that get into her tent. For the many who make their homes on the sidewalks of Skid Row rats are a huge problem. They get into tents and steal your food and their feces can be found everywhere they travel. In 2018, reports of street residents getting typhoid fever and typhus began to emerge and the numbers are still on the rise. Typhus doesn’t come directly from the rats but rather the fleas they carry and in the summer months the flea population runs rampant. Tales of the Archives- Pearl City 🍍”Old Time Fun”. 📻 By the 1930s-50s, most Pearl City residents were employed in August Butts green bean fields which once covered much of what is now “West Boca.” It was a hard life and even the children worked in the fields during harvest time. Many Pearl City residents also lacked running water and electricity; things we take for granted today. Nonetheless, they knew how to enjoy themselves. Walter Dolphus recalled: “Well, the kids always played ball; and I never forget years ago of a marble range . . . was right in the center of Dixie Highway, and now you can’t even walk across it. A car would pass by probably every four or five hours. So that’s where we used to make up our marble range, right in the middle of Dixie Highway between 11th and 12th Streets. Right in the middle of Dixie Highway.” Amos Jackson had this memory: “We used to celebrate the 20th of May here [that is Florida’s “Emancipation Day”]. That’s the day that we were told that the slaves were freed. … The 20th of May was a big day to us. We’d have big baseball games, picnics on the beach and Collin Spain used to carry his juke box, or piccolo as we called it, on the beach; and he had a generator, and they called it a dynamo at the time, that would provide the electrical service for the box. We used to have music on the beach, swimming, ice cream, and sandwiches. Later on in the day we would have baseball games.” Irene Demery Carswell recalled the pleasures of a box supper: “Well this is boxes that the ladies would fix with food, and the men would buy these boxes. This was one of the recreational parties that they had. The men would buy the box maybe for fifty cents or seventy-five cents at the most. And then, for instance, if I made a box and you liked my box, I had this box all decorated with crepe paper, etc. And sometimes there’d be big boxes and little boxes, and they had fried chicken and potato salad and maybe some collard greens, or some homemade rolls, or maybe made a cake. We are BEYOOOOND thrilled to announce the launch of our new WE ARE ONE Positivi-Tee. When we sat down to come up with concept for our next Tee, it absolutely had to be one that inspired unity, togetherness and equality - all pillars upon which Project Feelgood was founded. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our creative team (an amazing bunch of people from all different walks of life) spent days researching and brainstorming to create a design that not only looked awesome but was multi-layered and represented an optimism for a better future. Below we explain all the little details: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏿 “WE ARE ONE was inspired by the famous Rosa Parks quote: there is only one race - the human race. We felt that the sentiment behind this quote is more pertinent than ever today and therefore inspired the words of the design. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔠 The typeface was designed by a foundry in the U.S. that specialises in creating fonts that were used on banners in the 1950s/60s Civil Rights protests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👍 The fingerprint represents the humanity that binds us all with the ridges of the print made up of common phrases we have seen on social media these past couple of months. Its also actually a thumbprint to represent how we all used our thumbs on our phones to protest and stand up AGAINST racism and FOR equality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤝 We purposefully decided to only create this Tee in Black and White to represent unity for the future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🖤And finally, as with all of our Tees, £1 is donated to charity and for this Tee (as with our NAH Tee), the donation will go the Black Lives Matter Foundation (@blklivesmatter) to support their work in fighting for freedom, liberation and justice for black communities around the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our WE ARE ONE Tee is available to purchase now at www.projectfeelgood.co.uk ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😘😘😘 - @projectfeelgoodco on Instagram
