In year 2, I told my mum I wanted to have short hair. I pointed to a woman in a vogue magazine with a pixie cut and selected it as my new look. She was undoubtedly a little surprised, but believing in free expression, took me to a hairdresser to get the chop. I think she expected it to be a phase that would pass quite quickly, but reality was it remained a part of my identity for years. I started to wear clothes only from the boys’ section, was called sir at restaurants and patted down by male security at the airport. Yet I knew I didn’t want to be a boy; I was sure about that. I’m still not quite sure where the line between my personal identity expression and gender confusion lay. Just before starting Year 7, my mum told me she supported me but that I might like to consider how others would perceive me at my new school. I felt hurt at first, but came around to the idea of changing pretty much overnight. I put a bright pink flower in my hair, and just like that, emerged a ‘girl’ once again. It surprises me that I lost such a huge part of who I was that night, quite so effortlessly. It is only recently that I’ve started to wonder what that must have done to the stability of my sense of self in the long run. I actually do consider myself to be quite a typically feminine person in terms of my personality – naturally submissive, expressive, empathetic etc. and yet I’ve always struggled to feel physically feminine. I was never stereotypically ‘pretty’ when I was younger, and I suppose that feeling has stayed with me a little. My small boobs, broad shoulders, thin hair and fairly androgynous style leaves me feeling quite distant from feeling beautiful in that way. I tend to wear figure-hiding baggy clothes and avoid looking like I’ve made an effort as the concept of being attractive makes me feel quite self-conscious. I would love to feel like a beautiful young woman but having not felt confident for most of my life, that sort of presence feels sadly distant. I wonder whether this distance relates to parts of my childhood I am yet to connect with. I wonder what femininity means to you? - @marthasmind on Instagram

I had the amazing opportunity to look into the prosecutions and enforcement actions brought against foreign corporations that have committed bribery. My job included data entry in Excel, reading and annotating academic articles, researching why these prosecutions occur, and more. As a Research Assistant, I learned how to better manage my time among work, school and my personal life. I also gained skills that are very useful for my own academics. For example, while completing the annotated bibliography I had to read many long articles. To allocate my time well, I learned how to skim academic papers to pull out the most relevant information. This is just one of many skills I developed that will help me not only with my own academics, but future work opportunities as well. Furthermore, I learned a lot about collaboration. I now feel more confident in sharing my ideas and working with others as research positions involve a lot of communication and collaboration with a professor. I highly recommend Work Study as it is an incredible opportunity to get involved on campus, further your own knowledge and build relationships. Work Studies provide you with the opportunity to look further into a subject you enjoy or to look at something you never really knew a lot about. There are a variety of positions available to students each semester. Each position will award you knowledge that can be implemented into your own academics and future opportunities. They also provide you with the ability to connect with a professor in your field.
