Operation Silver Fox (June 29 – Nov. 17 1941) . Operation Silver Fox was a military operation during Operation Barbarossa executed by mostly Finnish and German troops. The main objective of the operation was to cut off and capture the Soviet Port of Murmansk, at the northern Finnish-Russian border. The plan was to make a pincer-movement from northern Finland towards the objective with around 230,000 soldiers. The attack started on the 29th of June and the operation was divided in three stages: operation Reindeer, operation Platinum Fox and operation Arctic Fox. . Prior to the official attack, the Finnish-German troops executed operation Reindeer, in which two German divisions moved from Kirkenes to capture the area around Petsamo. The offensive came as a surprise for the Soviet troops, who were quickly overpowered. This operation began successfully and the troops regrouped themselves in preparation of the following phase: operation Platinum Fox. . On the 29th of June, operation Platinum Fox was executed, in which the Germans had to advance east from Petsamo towards the Port of Murmansk. Supported by the element of surprise, the attack started off well for the Germans, but divisions of the Soviet’s 14th Army managed to recover themselves. The Soviets had the advantage with constant restocking from the port, the constant arrival of reinforcements and the support of several marine units in Murmansk. After several unsuccessful attempts of the German to cross the Litsa River, operation Platinum Fox had failed. . Operation Polar Fox also started on the 29th of June. In this attack German units launched a frontal attack against Salla, while Finnish troops attempted to outflank the Soviet lines further south towards Kayraly. The Germans directly came under heavy fire in the villages around Salla. Untrained for the Arctic warfare, they suffered heavy losses. Other divisions were also halted in their advance by the strong Soviet resistance. Operation Silver Fox was officially ended by the führer on November 17 1941. The main reasons for the failure were: difficult terrain with bad roads, poor intelligence and communication and the fierce resistance of the Red Army. - @worldwar2_story on Instagram

“The Creation of Adam” is a 30”x 20” silverpoint drawing. Silverpoint is bone ash, animal fat, and water mixed together to create a liquid that is then put on paper. For this drawing, I mixed a bit of yellow ocher in to create a tint. After it drys you can use metal (ideally silver) to draw on the paper. . . . . . #drawing #illustration #medical #god #art #artist - @h.riversart on Instagram

A little history lesson looking at the ‘Super J’, Ranger - the fastest of all the American J’s. 1️⃣ Starling Burgess and Olin J Stephens designed Ranger for Harold Vanderbilt’s 1937 America’s Cup defence against Sir Thomas Sopwith’s Endeavour II. 2️⃣ Built from high grade steel, Ranger was launched on 11th May 1937. Disaster struck on the delivery trip from Maine to Newport when rigging parts fell from the mast whilst under tow. Nothing could be done at that stage of the delivery and the top 30 broke off. Fortunately, a new aluminium mast built for Rainbow was loaned to the project and used throughout the Defender series until Rangers mast could be repaired. 3️⃣ Ranger went on to prove conclusively that she was the fastest of all the American yachts. She beat the British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, Rhode Island. It was the last time J-class yachts would race for the Americas Cup. 4️⃣ By the end of 1941, Ranger, which had been laid up with all the other US Js, was scrapped. 5️⃣ The Ranger that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched at the Danish Yacht shipyard in Skagen, Denmark in 2003. Find out more about Ranger and the other J Class yachts on the website. This is an older piece of mine from 2016. It was fun to see that the message still remains very relevant to 2020. . . “Metamorphosis”, 36”x60”, oil on canvas. . “Metamorphosis” is a representation of alternate responses to circumstance. Landing safely, whole and untouched by the journey, there is no need to change. Only the broken have the impetus to become something better than they were. Sprout new roots, evolve and grow. A new creature emerging from a chrysalis fashioned by adversity. “Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.” . . . #Art #Artist #Artwork #Instaart #Instaartist #Acrylic #Painting #Canvas #Creative #Paintings #Instaartwork #vancouverartist #surrealist #surrealism #contemporarysurrealism #contemporarysurrealist #contemporarysurrealistartist #canadianartist #australianartist - @william.d.higginson on Instagram

#arte #Novecento #museocollezionemazzolini #bobbio #piacenza #metafisica #dechirico#diocesipiacenzabobbiobeniculturali#cooltourpiacenza #VisitBobbio #BobbioExperience #ilborgodeiborghi #ValTrebbia #VisitValTrebbia #valtrebbiaexperience #CulturaEmiliaRomagna #EmiliaRomagnaArte #IBCEmiliaRomagna #MuseiItaliani #GiorgioDeChirico #FondazioneGiorgioeIsaDeChirico #collezionemazzolini #equinoziodautunno - @collezionemazzolini on Instagram
