I am personally thrilled to announce that I am curating an exhibition of print and textile-based works by acclaimed artist Louise Bourgeois that will be scheduled in our museum during the next academic year of fall 2021/spring 2022. Please stay tuned for more details regarding the exhibition titled The Labor of Remembrance. In association, I am pleased to present a special selection of works by Ruth Zuckerman in the Ruth Zuckerman Pavilion, as both artists share unique themes of the familial. Renowned for her fluid and organic sculptures which many times present stylizations of the human figure, Ruth Zuckerman’s work explores universal themes of family and protection, as seen in “Son Worshipper”. The work of Louise Bourgeois explores aspects of the human condition and the familial as well, through depictions of anxiety, fear, helplessness, and extreme vulnerability. The etching “Do Not Abandon Me” by Bourgeois, presents a single female figure watching as her child hovers on the verge of dissolution. If not for the umbilical cord that tethers and ultimately unites the two, desertion would be imminent. “I always had the fear of being separated and abandoned. Fernando Botero Mona Lisa, Age Twelve 1959 “Botero’s ‘Mona Lisa, Age Twelve’ version of the Mona Lisa was painted in 1959. Deeply rooted in satire, Botero used inflated figures as his subjects perhaps to comment on the figure’s egos and feeling of self-importance. In painting the Mona Lisa in the way that he did, he created an image that was so far removed and unlike the original painting currently housed at the Louvre, that the final result almost felt like a joke or parody. In some ways, it can be said that he portrayed the Mona Lisa in her childhood- with chubby cheeks and a face that is naïve and cute- to begin his search for the origin of Mona Lisa’s smile, which is something that has plagued society for decades. Mona Lisa, Age Twelve can be found at Museo de Botero, which is a historic museum situated in the well-known neighborhood of La Candelaria in Bogotá, Colombia. Happy birthday to French artist Edgar Degas, who was born on this day in 1834. At the last Impressionist show in 1886, the 52-year-old Edgar Degas exhibited six nudes from a series of pastels on paper depicting women at their toilette. One of the things that I appreciate about the works from this period are the fact that the women are wholly absorbed in their bathing rituals, presented with a tone of matter-of-fact beauty rather than a lewd voyeurism. Cheeky Art History Egon Schiele, what an absolute genius. This piece is titled Kneeling Girl, Resting on Both Elbows and was drawn and painted in 1917. Well known for his talents, even when he was quite young, he found himself struck by circumstances over and over again, yet able to create and paint no matter where he was. He was enlisted during the war, and they knew how talented he was and kept him from the front, allowing him his painting and drawing. He was briefly in jail for a few weeks, and even then created 12 pieces inside his cell. No matter where the world took him and told him to be, he always found a way to paint. Who doesn’t love a good story?! Our friend @marjorievellart is really good at sharing little snippets full of art history and curious facts. *We always feel a bit smarter after reading her. :) __ #repost @marjorievellart André Derain draws on an established tradition in modern French art : finding artistic subject matter in places of entertainment in Paris. His painting shows a dancer from the restaurant and night club Le rat mort (The Dead Rat), which was also one of French artist, Toulouse-Lautrec’s regular haunts, years before. Half undressed, the dancer sits with her stockinged legs crossed, slumped on what looks like a bed as she looks directly out at us. Derain works with composition, colours and lines in a rather sophisticated manner. Take a close look at the woman’s hands. One hand is morbidly larger and exaggerated in contrast with her other hand and yet, it still seems exactly right in the picture, giving it a sense of freshness and wildness. The painting is a key work from Derain’s ‘Fauvist’ period (from the French, Le fauve: the wild ones). It has its origins in a summer spent with the somewhat older fellow artist Henri Matisse in 1905 in the town of Collioure in the south of France. Here, they both experimented with using colours in new ways, taking them beyond a purely descriptive function, such as showing us that the sea is blue. Here, colours are also used to describe emotional states. On a personal note, I feel she represents all of us, patiently waiting to get back into life, post COVID. #EdvardMunch - The dance of life (1899-1900) La fresque de vie a été pensée comme une série cohérente de tableaux, qui doivent donner ensemble un aperçu de la vie. Toute la fresque est traversée par la ligne diffuse du rivage, au-delà de laquelle déferle la mer toujours en mouvement ; Les diverses formes de la vie se déploient sous le couvert des grands arbres, avec leurs soucis et leurs joies. Jai ressenti cette fresque comme un poème de vie, damour et de mort... les tableaux avec le rivage et les arbres - ce sont toujours les mêmes couleurs qui réapparaissent ici -, la nuit dété donne laccord -, les arbres et la mer donnent les lignes verticales et horizontales qui se répètent sur toutes les toiles, le rivage et les personnages donnent le ton de la vie qui foisonne à son gré -, des couleurs puissantes répandent à travers toutes les toiles lécho du même accord... now in the National Museum of Art in Norway. The arch of life spans from white young virgin in white over the pair with red wife to an old widow in black. The painting was an important work in Munchs project The Frieze of Life.
