8/25/2020🌞Huntington Beach, CA Seek the things that bring you peace and make you feel free. Yesterday I laid in the sand and looked up to the sky for the second time since coming here—which was the first thing I wanted to do when I got here. After that, we did headstands. And after that I had a mini photo shoot with myself. This would have usually scared me but this was genuinely the first time I didn’t care what a single soul around me thought. No matter how long I was there or how many pictures I took, I felt free and I felt good. & that’s what matters. To follow that, I had a freaking Zoom training session on the beach with one of my awesome clients... How much better does that get? Congratulations to our September Coordinator of Month, Gabriella! Gabriella dove into this school year with full force and came ready for anything, said her supervisor, Kate. During these uncertain times, Gabriella has been a resource for the students, staff, and entire community of Kingston. Gabriella has been able to continue her programming from last year, and one such project includes pioneering her school’s “Back Pack” program where she is able to supply students with meals they can take home and enjoy on the weekends. With the support of her fellow staff members and students, she has also started new initiatives, including restoring the school’s greenhouse in order to enhance Kingston’s nutrition education resources. On top of everything, Gabriella is also pursuing her MPH which she will be receiving this upcoming December! We are grateful for all of Gabriella’s hard work! I’m holding back. I’ll confess at least that. I spend a lot of energy protecting people in my life by keeping stories to myself because it includes them. In my books, the story isn’t all mine to tell. Technically my perspective is just ONE of many possible perspectives of the same scenario. So in MY mind I can’t possibly present the truth by myself. And if I’m perfectly honest with you, it’s hard enough to make friends, I don’t want to be known as the person who is just living life to come up with my next best instagram post.👀 The truth is, despite the near-constant smiling both in real life and online, There’s A LOT going on. Most likely much more than you think. SO MUCH so, that a family member called me “fake” yesterday. 😮 Because really, how could I possibly be smiling and presenting happily despite everything happening?! Both in my life and in the media. It made me think “Maybe there’s something wrong with me.“ 😰 But Here’s the thing: I’m not pretending everything’s fine, I’m doing Everything that I can to ensure that despite whatever happens in life, I’ll be fine. I survived my childhood. When I was younger, I felt powerless, and helpless in my miserable life. (Tune into @illuminatingtaboo for details) I was constantly let down by those I felt were meant to protect me in major ways and I remember taking a hard look at myself in the mirror and saying out loud “Be your own hero. Nobody is coming to save you” I was one Badass 5 year-old! But I’ve been on this mission for a LONG time! Life isn’t happening TO me, it’s happening around me. All that I can control in this lifetime is MYSELF. If I want to feel joy despite everything in my life being on fire, I make sure that I give my body and mind a fighting chance to do so! In the age of information, I obsessed over healing my mind and body. It’s ALL I HAVE. The rest can be mess if it wants to, but I’ll be fine. CORRECTION: I’m NOT fake, I’m bulletproof. There’s nothing worse than being half a country away and getting a call that your three year old needs to go to the ER. Poor Evy girl leaned her chair backwards at dinner and hit her head on the corner of a wall and got a concussion. 😩😭I’m thankful Mimi was there to notice it was more than just a little bump and I’m also thankful that this wasn’t happening while we were shooting the wedding! She was so brave.... the only time she cried was when the doctor asked her what happened and she got weepy telling him that she leaned her chair back when she wasn’t supposed to. Sweet thing. This was her fourth ER visit and she’s only 3!! 🤦🏼♀️ Thank you Jesus for protecting her! I found Pilates at a young age going to classes with my mam, but high school and being a teenager got in the way! Fast forward to university and working as a carer, I injured my back and was advised to return to Pilates by a specialist. Not only did it help me physically but it also helped my mental wellbeing, releasing the stress of doing a masters degree! I continued to practice alongside my career in health psychology and qualified in 2018 as a level 3 Pilates instructor. Since then I have been teaching across RCT and Caerphilly in leisure centres and community venues, continuing successfully live from my living room during lockdown! Att samtala är det näst bästa jag vet, efter musiken. Det vet alla som sett mig live, eller känner mig privat. Att ställa frågor och få komma närmare. Lära sig mer. I många år har jag velat göra en unik talk-show med mycket musik. Det har varit på tal på många olika sätt i olika format i över 7 år, och den stora anledningen till varför jag vill det är för att jag älskar att intervjua människor och möta människor som inspirerar mig, och som utmanar mig. Sen jag gjorde min musikdokumentär på SVT för ett par år sen där jag intervjuade över 50 kreativa skapande människor i New York, London och Stockholm så har längtan efter ett intervju format, på tv/radio/podd varit under mer intensivt arbete. En TV talk-show, med en kvinnlig programledare på kvällstid, är ju också tyvärr något som TV sällan vågar sig på 😊.. tills NU läste jag precis. Med Carina Bergfeldt! Grattis! SMILE * You never know who needs to see your smile today. Whether it’s someone you know or a complete stranger, it can completely turn their day around (YES, even with a mask on! I know you all have been practicing smiling with your eyes). * One of the hardest things after breaking my jaw (besides yano, eating) was trying to smile or laugh less because 1. It’s awkward AF to smile with your jaw wired shut. 2. The first couple weeks it hurt. * But smiling is what I do…like ALOT. It’s how I welcome people to my PT practice, my classes, my virtual PT sessions. So trying to do less of it was (is) really freakin weird for me. BUT here I am brackets and rubber bands doing what I do best. Things have changed slightly in the last 24 hours with my jaw healing ( I am OK!) but more on that in a future post and some stories soon. Mini cut update ⭐️ about 10 weeks ago I set out to start cutting my weight a little bit. Nothing drastic, but I wanted more control over my nutrition, and I also thought losing a little from the scale would progress my running. (Disclaimer- we like all forms of Grace in these pictures). There’s about a 10 lb difference in these pictures (when you’re short, it shows ok), I set out to lose weight, yes. But I wanted a consistent loss so that I could maintain my progress. Whenever you’re trying to alter your “maintenance weight” it takes time, patience, and consistency. Consistency with nutrition, supplementation, rest, and of course- exercise. This is not where I want to end, this is just an update. I mainly wanted to post about it because I think when we “freak out” about the scale, or our pants not fitting, etc. we want this immediately fixed. The “as fast as possible” approach where idc what I do to my body in the long run I just want to be “skinny” mentality is TOXIC & will likely have you ending up heavier than where you started. There’s nothing sexy or glamorous about the word “consistency” but it trumps anything else you could do when it comes to working your way towards a goal. This is also my first time using a thermogenic (I’ve been using @bpnsupps Bare Burn) and it’s been like a little added cherry on top to what I’ve been doing. 10/10 will keep using everyday, enhances my alertness, stabilizes my mood, & I get an extra calorie burn so - win win win. 😂 if you have any questions on where to start with weight loss (or supplementation) feel free to reach out to me. - @itscoachgrace on Instagram

I dont know who needs to hear this, but your hair does not determine your professionalism. I struggled with this for YEARS! I went to the extreme of not wearing braids or my natural hair because I considered these hairstyles ghetto and unprofessional. I struggled the most with the angst of changing my hair and then going to work and no one recognizing me. Or when they did recognize me, I would spend the first half of my meetings explaining to the group how long my hair took and how I wasnt going to be able to wash it for a few weeks. Its draining, to say the least. But what I had to learn is that my hair was not a reflection of my work ethic. Our hair is our crown and for black women, in particular, our hair is our superpower. We can go from twist out to knotless braids to silk press to unit all in a matter of a week if we wanted to. Let me say it plain, rock your hair however you want, sis!! What if I say I’m pregnant and I’m actually wrong? What if sometime between the last time I heard baby’s heartbeat and when someone asks me, something has changed? #pregnancyafterloss . When I say ”I’m pregnant” it feels as though I’m saying, “I’m confident in this pregnancy, I’m not worried at all,” and, “since I’m pregnant today I have no doubts that in a few months I’ll bring home baby,” but I don’t always feel that way. . The doubt and fear is real, but it makes each day I feel confident I’m still pregnant more precious. (I.e. each day I feel baby move😍). . Fear and joy can co-exist and we can choose which to focus on. A few people have asked what is that I do for work. And since we are literally in the middle of a pandemic I thought it would be a good time to speak about what I do. • I work in Emergency Management. Specifically in Public Assistance. What that means, is that I handle grant management for applicants who have been affected by natural or man made disasters. This ranges from mudslides, hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical storms, snow storms, and now medical disasters (like COVID-19). I am proud to work for one of the only states that will bring an applicant 100% whole-which means that all the funds that an applicant spends on restoring their business..etc to pre-disaster conditions will be reimbursed by the State and FEMA if a disaster is federally declared and 75% if it’s just State declared. • COVID-19 has shook us all, and there are a bunch if policies and procedures that are constantly changing so we can accommodate the needs of municipalities, counties, towns, and Private Non-Profits..etc as they too are adjusting to the immediate need for their communities. • If you have any specific questions list them below. “Mom!! I can hear music!!” Hearing those words as a parent to a deaf or HoH child IS music to your ears. Since Paisley’s mapping last week, she has really started noticing the sounds she had never heard before. It truly warms my heart to see all the new experiences and also saddens me at the same time knowing what all she was missing that a hearing person takes for granted. We are also having fun with our new EarBands and matching them to all her outfits! I never imagined how popular my headbands I created just for her would become! You all amaze me with your support and I also love seeing all the photos of your little ones wearing them! We have sold over 100 in the past 3 weeks!! i’m def down for #beckyalbertalliappreciation. Some of you know I landed my agent via a pitch contest, #DVpit. I had only entered one other contest (a diff project, not OOA) & it resulted in nibbles but nothing more. So, I was reluctant to enter #DVpit, thinking it would be another exercise in heartbreak. After all, I’d sent out story after story only to receive every rejection. My fave: “you write well but I’m not sure there’s a market for this kind of story”—umm, you mean coming of age?? I decided I had nothing to lose (esp since #DVpit promotes diverse voices). A few hours into the contest, I had two YA writers (neither of whom I knew) boost my pitch—& yep, Becky was one. She said “someone needs to make this a book”. Later, when OPPOSITE OF ALWAYS was indeed on its way to becoming “a book”, she was the first person to shout me out in an interview—I have it bookmarked!—& she went on to blurb my debut! And while we only used a few words from her quote, her praise STILL warms my soul. She didn’t have to engage w/ me at all, let alone use her platform to amplify my story. But that’s Becky. She’s gracious, incredibly thoughtful, & generous. Even recently, when she knew I was having a hard time, she reached out w/ much-appreciated support. I met Becky for the 1st time at a book conference. I wasn’t on any panels, I was just attending bec Becky and Angie Thomas were there, and they were/are BOOK ROYALTY. Becky prob doesn’t remember; tbh, I barely recall what I said. But I did manage: “Hi, I love your book. I hope this isn’t weird but it was one of 5 books I kept on my desk the entire time I was drafting OPPOSITE, that’s how much it means to me.” The rest of that weekend I walked around hoping she didn’t think I was an idiot, haha. Now Becky’s books are no longer on my desk. Because my desk is too small & too messy, ha. But her books are front & center on the shelf just above it. Often I glance up & smile. BLACK WOMEN AND GIRLS MATTER!! I spent the evening taking photos with these two the other day and I was both happy and sick at the same time. Happy because we could not stop laughing and sick because the thought of them being killed while sleeping in their own bed, with no justice infuriates me. I would stop at nothing to get justice for my babies. Here’s the thing I don’t have to ONLY worry about my son being killed, I also have to worry about my daughters. No one talks about when Black girls go missing or end up killed. Why is that? Why don’t they make the news? No one is rushing to solve cases that involve Black women. Where is their justice? It’s like I said a few months back, Black women have to carry so many burdens and so much responsibility. We are LAST in this world! Black Women have been getting raped, both physically, mentally, emotionally in this country since America began. ⠀ We shouldn’t always have to be the strong ones. The ones who constantly persevere. PIVOT. When you pivot and pivot and pivot again, one after another… It’s called dancing. . A pivot is a foundational movement. One of the first steps you learn in almost any dance class. You put all of your weight into one leg, and then change direction. Businesses pivot, dancers pivot, athletes pivot, relationships pivot, Ross, Rachel and Chandler on “Friends” pivot. . Over the past few months, life has presented us with opportunities to pivot. To swiftly change direction by educating ourselves, asking questions, and looking out for one another. I’ve pivoted 100x in the past 5 months, and learned more about myself and this world than I would have had the opportunity to do if things hadn’t slowed down. If the world had not presented us with challenges and moments that prompted radical change. . All of this to say, it’s ok to alter your direction. It’s ok to pivot if things don’t feel right, if you change your mind, or if there’s something better ahead that requires a shift. Let’s talk about clinical anxiety, mkay? I have it. I don’t necessarily hide that I have it, but I was diagnosed with G.A.D. back in 2017 and I don’t think I have ever specifically gone out of my way to write a post about it either. Anxiety disorders are THE MOST common mental illness in the U.S., affecting over 40 million adults. They’re highly treatable, yet only a small percentage of people receive treatment or reach out for help. Personally, I struggled for a long time with feeling broken, weak, and out of control of my brain. Some days those feelings still creep up on me, but I’ve learned, and continue to learn, how to work with them. It’s hard to explain what anxiety feels like to those who don’t struggle with it. In small doses, it’s typically just nagging worry thoughts. The feeling that something is perpetually, fundamentally wrong. The feeling that you’re not doing enough, the people you’re around don’t like you, you’re dropping the ball. Little things like getting out the door to run, going to work, socializing, and texting people back make you feel stressed. You know it doesn’t make sense, but anxiety can be so convincing, it’s hard to combat. On really bad days, anxiety manifests into physical symptoms, it can feel hard to breathe If I let it run rampant, my anxiety can manifest into full blown depression. Luckily, medication and talk therapy help. As long as I am intentional about taking care of myself and honest with my doctor, those symptoms are manageable over time. Why am I saying all of this? Because, if you’re still reading, chances are you or someone you know/love deals with anxiety in a similar way. I want to do my part in normalizing these conversations. If you’re struggling and you haven’t reached out for help yet, please contact a doctor or a psychologist and set up an appointment. There are even apps like BetterHelp, where you can talk with a psychologist virtually. But if nothing else, just start by telling someone you love and trust how you feel. Facing mental illness is one of the hardest, most humbling journeys... but so worth it. Be kind to yourself. thank you to my neighbor and soul sista who 1. Kicked my butt in a Les Mills workout today and 2. Inspired me to share this- you know who you are!!🤩 this is me totally geeking out the other day because I hit a new PR for deadlift and finally broke 100 lbs- while I’m totally ecstatic about this, I’m even more proud of what I overcame this year (swipe to see what I looked like just a few months ago vs now) with the help of my family, friends, and biggest supporter @soniblake 🤍 stressors in my old job mixed with other life challenges put me in a really dark place. through a lot of self work and tough conversations, I made it out on the other end... but as we know, depression is a journey and you’re never really out of the woods completely. my point here is: let’s respect one another’s journeys. I’m trying to make more of a conscious effort to love and respect my body and mind for where we are at today, what’s been overcome, and what I know I’m capable of overcoming in the future. similarly, when looking at others on Instagram, I’m trying my best to not be judgmental or (more often than not) compare myself to them/ then think badly about myself or my body. we are all on our own paths, our own journeys... let’s continue to love and respect people for who their SOULS are and how far they’ve come, no matter how tumultuous the past may have been🤍 - @alex__soni__ on Instagram

Hey you, yes you.... this your gentle reminder that you’re doing the best you can. You’ve got a lot to juggle and it’s ok to drop the ball. Just pick them back up when you’re ready. . I was talking to one of my mamas in my group yesterday. She’s not just a mama. She’s a wife and works full time in the Air Force. Her and her husband. She also volunteers hours at the hospital on the weekend because wants a career in the medical field. She’s freaking busy! We are doing this really hard program with me and she messaged me that she felt bad she couldn’t get a workout in and she was behind a day. 1 day...1 little day. . We had a conversation and I told her to stop worrying about it and that’s she’s going a great job. I told her I’m amazed at how working mamas do it. Like how do you all get up, get your kids all ready let alone your damn self, get out the door, get your kids to where they need to be on time, and then get yourself some where on time? Damn that sounds exhausting. And then your going to find time to workout, do the laundry, make dinner, bathe the kids... HOLY SHIT! No wonder you miss a workout. . But then she said back.... I don’t know how YOU do it. Taking care of all the kids all day. Doing all the house things. You never get a break. Going to work is an escape and you never escape. . Her reply took me off guard. I never once thought about it like that. The truth is... if you’re a mom, making time for you is hard. It has to be a freaking effort. And the grass isn’t always greener. If you think one mom has it easier than you it makes it look “easy”.... she’s probably struggling too. But the amazing thing is, we’ve built this community if women who encourage each other and show each other it’s possible. Don’t let this glam face fool you; my thoughts have been obnoxiously overwhelming the last few days, actually weeks, or more like months and it’s been tough. I know I say this a lot, but I often don’t preach it because I’m trying to act all tough and resilient, but seriously it’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. So if you feel like complete shit, just own it. There’s nothing to hide here. ⠀ I actually couldn’t pinpoint why I was feeling so heavy until I came across a post by @scarymommy - to summarize: us moms are beyond tired. From all the decisions about life, work, school, kids, etc. To say the mental load has been exhausting is an understatement. BUT (there’s a BUT) at the end of the day, we know there’s a tomorrow where we’ll be able to get right back up and feel hopefully ready to make some difficult decisions. Even if it means you have to make those decisions in your pjs - it will be okay. ⠀ We’re all in unique situations and you just never know what’s truly going on in someone’s mind. I wanted to share a few general ways of how I have been coping with the abundance of anxiety lately: ⠀ 1. Walks. The fresh air does wonders. ⠀ 2. Unplug. Social media is FAR from healthy (yes, I’m aware of the irony here). ⠀ 3. Exercise. The amount of steam you burn is very mentally energizing. ⠀ 4. Take it one hour at a time. I used to joke about this, but literally...this has worked. Moods change very quickly around here (and I don’t just mean the kids’). ⠀ 5. Shifting priorities. No one said dishes need to be washed before a meal is prepped (unless you’re out of dishes of course). No but really, sometimes I could have a day planned to a tee but I continuously detour throughout the day. ⠀ I don’t know if any of this makes sense as I’ve literally just dumped all my scattered thoughts here tonight. If feeling beautiful is important to you, I invite you to focus on the inside first and foremost. How we tend to our emotional, energetic and mental needs has a direct reflection on our physicality. When I swapped pushing my body for external approval and prioritized my emotional health my body followed suit…or at least I was less concerned how others “saw” me and more invested in how I accepted myself. To be beautiful is to be YOU. Unequivocally and unapologetically YOU. Rare beauty is when your energy oozes out of your eyes, smile, energy and hugs…it cannot be contained, it simply radiates everywhere you go. “Are you going to let pleasure into your life or not?” This was a quote shared by one of my favorite Tantra teachers, @laurie.handlers, on a call yesterday, and it it landed HARD. Receiving pleasure hasn’t come easy to me. In fact, at times it seems hardwired for me to turn it down. When I first dove into my own sex journey, the concept of tantric sex seemed so enticing, yet overwhelming at the same time. I would look at these embodied, sensual women I so desperately desired to be like, but their lives seemed so far away and unrealistic. It felt unreachable. Then I heard @thatsexchick share that when people are interested in tantra, what she sees is they are desiring more connected sex. And she was right. That’s exactly what I was desiring. To me it doesn’t matter what you call it. I just wanted more connection and more pleasure. I wanted to be able to soften, and receive more. I can’t even count the number of times I would change things up in the middle of sex because I was SO in my head that I was “taking too long” or “felt guilty about it being my turn”. Receiving and accepting more pleasure in my life has been a series of baby steps that many times have nothing to do with sex. It’s smiling and saying thank you when someone offers to help me. (Instead of the voice saying you can do it on your own) It’s watching my favorite show in bed with a cup of ice cream. (Instead of the voice saying you shouldn’t be eating that) It’s walking my dog in the mornings and taking joy in how happy he is. (Instead of the voice saying to listen to a podcast, and learn more) And then it’s saying yes when he wants to focus on me and my orgasm. (Instead of the voice saying but you have to take care of him too) This doesn’t translate into me being a selfish person, or lover. In fact, it fills my cup MORE so that when I want to give, I have so much to offer. I want my life to be orgasmic. Filled with pleasure, fun and excitement. In all my years of being a photographer I don’t know that I’ve ever posted a photo of myself. However, my cousin @hayleyminer grabbed some headshots of me today so I thought it would be a good chance. Aber das ist oftmals nur eine Facette des Menschen, die perfekte Pose, den Bauch eingezogen oder ein bisschen was an der Haut retuschiert. Aber wichtig ist auch, das wir uns klar machen, das diese Plattform eben meistens nicht der Realität entspricht und das es ganz normal ist, einen Bauch zu haben oder hier und da eine Delle oder Falte. Deshalb wollte ich heute ein reales Bild posten, ohne mich gestylt zu haben, ohne mich in eine perfekte Pose gesetzt zu haben - einfach ich, so wie ich bin. Ich würde Lügen, wenn ich behaupten würde, das es mich keine Überwindung kostet so ein Bild zu posten. Denn auch ich hatte schon viele Selbstzweifel in meinem Leben, dachte ich bin nicht gut genug, oder habe mir Gedanken gemacht, was andere über mich denken könnten. Aber das ist totaler Quatsch. Denn was im Leben wirklich zählt, ist nicht eine Zahl auf der Waage, Dellen am Oberschenkel oder ein paar Pickel im Gesicht - sondern sich selbst zu lieben, wie man ist und glücklich über das Leben zu sein, das man hat. Well, the next step in my dreadlock journey happened yesterday... I drove to Philly to see @dreadloxoxo at @rebelrebelsalon for some much needed root maintenance and to put my brushable hair into dreadlocks as well. Ive grown tired of having to take care of my hair two different ways, and wanted the ease of styling that comes with having all my longer hair in dreadlocks. As usual, Crissa did an amazing job, my dreadhawk even got some love from @vagabond_locs. It’s easy to think that you’re going to just have your life figured out. That growing up will be easy. I wouldn’t go back, and frankly, I don’t think I’d change much either. I used to wish for the world to stop — you know for a day or two — just so I could catch up. Then COVID hit and the world shut down for about 6 months. I still don’t feel “caught up.” Probably because this pandemic showed me that having the time is not the same as having the emotional capacity. But as I watch this one grow, I’m so proud of how she honors herself. She doesn’t hesitate to say NO and is not one to linger on the phone when it doesn’t suit her. She’s honest when she doesn’t like something and (often to my annoyance) is always pushing for a better deal lol. (Opened a pretty little package yesterday from the doctors celebrating achieving Level V in our company consistently.) • But for me, it will always stand as a reminder of the VICTORY over my fears and the moment I said YES to trusting Jesus more than what I feared people would/could/might think about me. • And I’ve never had to fight more to keep my eyes on Him. But dang am I grateful He fought this hard for my heart and the people He surrounded me with. • The pretty necklace + all expenses paid luxury trip to San Fran/Napa doesn’t hurt either. In fact, I’m over the moon excited and grateful! But they aren’t the victory. • Grateful for the moments of stretching, pressing in when I wanted to run, immediately answered prayers (many of them are on my team), hawks in my yard + dew on the fleece and the spirit of God speaking clearly in such a unique way that I would know it was Him. @colelovinn thoughts on flying during #COVID 🤔 I was a little skeptical from the moment I booked my flight until I arrived at my destination. I was more concerned about other peoples hygiene habits and the precautions the airports were taking. It honestly did not feel much different than any other trip I would take. There was no temperature check and no questions after coming from a hot spot ( LA). There were 1000s of people traveling, and everyone is still bunched up waiting for their group to be called (traveling pet peeve 🙄) Once I boarded the flight, I was lucky to have an entire row to myself. This was honestly better than First Class because they still had to sit next to each other. 🤪 I would suggest if you decide to fly out during this time, continue to disinfect, minimize eating airport food, and cover up your face the entire time. I grew up with people in my family saying when you’re in your 40’s that is half way to dead 😳. I am 45 and sometimes it feels so old—especially when I get out of bed in the morning and everything cracks and pops, when I try to stay up past 10PM 🙋🏼♀️😂 or when I think about the fact that my daughters are in college. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. You may (or may not) have noticed that I’ve been spending a lot of time away from the BGS page lately. I want to take a moment to talk about 𝘄𝗵𝘆 and what’s been going on with me. ⠀ ⠀ 1. I started 𝗕𝗚𝗦 as a way to connect with something larger than myself. I wanted to share my journey along the path to Ph.D. scientist but more than that, I wanted an outlet for the very real thoughts and 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 that I had along the way. I wanted this page to serve brown and black girls everywhere who needed and still need more representation but simultaneously I wanted to address the mental weight of this journey. ⠀ ⠀ — ⠀ ⠀ I found myself at a point where I was doing neither. If I’m being honest, this platform became more of a trigger for my anxieties than an outlet for them. I could not serve myself or anyone else since I was constantly battling my own demons. ⠀ ⠀ 2. I was studying for my quals (which FYI I passed and ya girl is a 𝗣𝗵.𝗗. 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 now). This was such a stress inducing time for me and I’m so glad that it’s over! Even though I’ve now got the huge task of preparing my dissertation. 🙃⠀ ⠀ ——⠀ ⠀ I hope to post more regularly now but the truth is - I’m still discovering my truth. I deal with crippling anxiety and depression on a daily basis. I often feel like I don’t belong here and I can’t possibly compete with these insanely smart people that I encounter daily. As a 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 student, I spend tons of hours considering whether I am “as good as” my non-black counterparts. I constantly beat myself up over things that I feel I should have accomplished by now. I digress. ⠀ ⠀ — ⠀ ⠀ All of this to say. I see you. I hope you see me. I want to bring you science content. I want to bring you life content. I want to be transparent with you about this journey and I want you to know that I don’t have it together - but I’m always trying.
