Take chances in life. On this day 13 years ago, I got on a plane to Los Angeles to face off with the rest of the national winners of I Wanna Be A Soapstar gunning for a spot on Days of Our Lives. The role was written for a female named Justine. All of the other winners were talented women. I was a wreck believing there was no way I could pull it off. I arrived to a limo driver waiting for me with a sign that said Zancan. That was a first. This was my dream. Only a small fraction of people in the world get this opportunity, and I had that chance. But I was a nervous wreck. The next day, the limo picked me up and I arrived at NBC Studios. A few minutes later, the producer walked out and told us all that the contest got us here, but if none of us are good they would cast someone else. OK, then. That cast the fear of God in us. I was always taught to do things a little different. Be unique. So I did. When my name was called, I walked in the studio, pulled out rubber gloves and acted as if I was really at the crime scene. Being different led to the call I received a few hours later. You earned the role on Days of Our Lives, said the producer, as I overlooked the Hollywood sign. You were just a little bit different. You were ready, and you wanted this. I called my mom and dad, who were yelling in excitement so loud I swear the next room could hear me. I then called my acting teacher Corya Kennedy Channing, who ran down the hallway screaming. It all happened so fast. The next day, I was getting fitted by wardrobe, doing interviews with the cast, sitting five feet from Barack Obama and having lunch with Keith Urbans band. At one point in the day, I went outside and took a breath. But, that anxiety that felt paralyzing the entire week was gone. Instead, I was overcome with confidence and a belief that I belonged there. I have so many more stories I could share over the course of a few months, and maybe I will in the coming days. As I write this, I am tearing up.
