Countries are set to miss all of the targets they set themselves a decade ago to preserve nature and save Earths vital biodiversity, the United Nations said Tuesday. Humanitys impact on the natural world over the last five decades has been nothing short of cataclysmic: since 1970 close to 70 percent of wild animals, birds and fish have vanished, according to a WWF assessment this month. Amidst all the things occurring currently this is amongst the most pressing and heartbreaking to me. If capitalism continues we shall all perish . There is no way out of this runaway train of destruction without reinstating an approach that includes Indigenous led solutions as central. Within this framework there can be a role for all. But a role out of the current destructiveness. A role that is always considerate of future generations and also previous ones that shall guide our way as they have done and continue to as First Nations peoples. As our mother crys so do we. Wild steelhead and salmon runs are struggling at historically low numbers throughout the Columbia and Snake River Watershed. Adding a deadly gauntlet of indiscriminate commercial gill nets guarantees unacceptable bycatch impacts on endangered steelhead and salmon. Frankly, we are stunned by this terrible decision. ... The Wild Steelhead Coalition had submitted a letter to the Commission opposing the policy change and we thank the Commissioners who wisely voted against it. Restoration of the circa 1890 Lion Bridge has begun! The first step in the project is to stabilize the failing foundation. In order to make this happen, the North wall of the bridge needed to temporarily come down. The wall will be rebuilt using all of the original stones. A more recent date of 26,000 BP is considered less reliable. Three species are recognised. The best known, E. sibiricum, or Siberian unicorn was the size of a mammoth and is thought to have borne a large, thick horn on its forehead. Theories about the function of this horn include defense against predators, attracting mates, driving away competitors, sweeping snow from the grass in winter, and digging for water and plant roots. Like all rhinoceroses, elasmotheres were herbivorous. Unlike any other rhinos, its high-crowned molars were ever-growing. The known specimens of E. sibiricum reach up to 4.5 m (15 ft) in body length with shoulder heights over 2 m (6 ft 7 in) while E. caucasicum reaches at least 5 m (16 ft) in body length with an estimated mass of 3.6–4.5 tonnes (4–5 short tons), based on isolated molars that significantly exceed those known from the Siberian species. Megalodon hunting...prehistoric elephants! 😨 By PaleoGuy (James Kuether) The Megalodon, which went extinct millions of years ago, was the largest shark ever to prowl the oceans and one of the largest fish on record. The scientific name, Carcharocles megalodon, means giant tooth, and for good reason: Its massive teeth are almost three times larger than the teeth of a modern great white shark. The megalodons fossilized bones and teeth give scientists major clues about what the creature was like and when it died off. In 2014, a research group at the University of Zurich studied megalodon fossils using a technique called optimal linear estimation to determine their age. Their research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found that most of the fossils date back to the middle Miocene epoch to the Pliocene epoch (15.9 million to 2.6 million years ago). All signs of the creatures existence ended 2.6 million years ago in the current fossil record, the authors wrote. For comparison, our earliest Homo sapiens ancestors emerged only 2.5 million years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, according to the University of California Museum of Paleontology. A very small portion of the Zurich studys data — 6 out of 10,000 simulations — showed a 1% chance that these giant sharks could still be alive. Whats your opinion/ approach on how paleoartists bring to life prehistoric animals, especially dinosaurs? 🤔 Elephants, zebras, and rhinos would all look pretty different if they were interpreted the same way dinosaurs are. ILLUSTRATING LONG-EXTINCT CREATURES IS DIFFICULT, but important work. With no living specimens to observe, it’s up to “paleoartists” who draw, paint, or otherwise illustrate the creatures of prehistory as we think they might’ve been. Their work is the reason that when we talk about velociraptors, stegosaurs, or even woolly mammoths, we have some idea of what they looked like. But since all we have to go on are fossils, deciding how a dinosaur would have looked is as much art as it is science. And there’s at least one paleoartist who thinks we might be getting things wrong. C.M. Kosemen is an Istanbul-based artist and author (along with John Conway and Darren Naish) of the 2012 book, All Yesterdays: Unique and Speculative Views of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals.
