Reflections on a lake As I walk under this starry sky, wandering in the unknowns, With no clue whats happening in my life, I walk towards a lake, sit there and cry. As I wipe my tears a little, I see these reflections come into sight. Its 1879,I see a child giving food to his servants son without the knowledge of his family because they wouldnt approve their friendship. But for them friendship had no status. 1914, World War 1, a husband is promising his wife that he will come back soon. Theres hope in her eyes and theres fear. Fear that he might not return the same. 1931, theres a woman, sobbing. Why wasnt I enough ? She screams, Why did he cheat on me? she continues. 1945, a mother, mourning over her son whom she lost in an accident. Wondering how she is going to live the rest of her life without him. 1972, a boy, waiting for his boyfriend to reach the lake. They are going to elope, to a far away land as their love is beyond peoples understanding in the town. 1996, a father, dreaming about how he is going to earn money and his family would never have to face any inconvenience again. 2001, an old Muslim man is being beaten because of 9/11 attack. He is begging for them to have mercy and leave him, they dont know he suffered a loss in that attack too, not that they care. 2003, a little girl grasps several breaths as she cries, while her parents burry her bunny. The light of her life is no more. 2015, a couple is on their first date. They have butterflies in their stomachs, thinking how every heartbreak they had, was leading them to end up with each other. 2020, I see my own reflection, with tears in my eyes shouting that Im a failure. Trying to find the will to live and try again. When all these stories tell me that there is so much more to life than success and failure. This lake has seen it all. It shrieks all the emotions; misery, joy, dreams, failures, hopes, fears, innocence and wickedness. I write this with an extremely heavy heart. Archie Lyndhurst came In to my life nearly ten years ago, playing the young me in a short film I’d written. He was brilliant, so talented and funny. An utter joy to work with. So much so that it proved to be the start of a wonderful partnership, we did a skit at the London Palladium, he played me again in a sketch for my arena tour and special, and when we needed to find an actor to play the young Alfie Wickers in Bad Education it was the easiest piece of casting we ever had to do. Every time I worked with Archie he was the same - passionate, generous and pitch perfect, he was loved by everyone on set. I have no doubt he would have had a long and illustrious career and would have continued lighting up the lives of all those who encountered him. The enthusiastic and talented boy I met all those years ago had grown into an equally charming young man, during lockdown he would take shopping and groceries to my parents house for them when they couldn’t leave the house, it’s testament to what a wonderful and kind person he was. The world has been robbed of a truly special soul. He will never be forgotten, i feel utterly devastated that he is gone but i also feel so blessed to have met him. We’ve come a long way with the language we use to talk about our trans brothers and sisters, but we still have a long way to go. Billy Tipton was an American jazz musician, bandleader, and talent broker. For decades, Tipton assumed a male gender identity. Tiptons female birth sex (AFAB) was not publicly revealed until after his death, and the revelation came as a surprise to family and friends. Tiptons music career began in the mid-1930s when he led a band for radio broadcasts. He played in various dance bands in the 1940s and recorded two trio albums for a small record label in the mid-1950s. Thereafter, he worked as a talent broker. Tipton stopped performing in the late 1970s due to arthritis. Tiptons sex was reportedly concealed from the four women who would later call themselves Mrs. Tipton. Tipton kept the secret of his extrinsic sexual characteristics from them by telling them he had been in a serious car accident that resulted in damaged genitals and broken ribs. The existence of Trans people is not something new, they have always been here, are real and valid.
