Smelly gas = life on Venus? 👽🪐 In a surprising twist, scientists at @mitpics @cardiffuni , and elsewhere have observed what may be signs of life in the clouds of our other, even closer planetary neighbor, Venus. While they have not found direct evidence of living organisms there, if their observation is indeed associated with life, it must be some sort of “aerial” life-form in Venus’ clouds — the only habitable portion of what is otherwise a scorched and inhospitable world. “This means either this is life, or it’s some sort of physical or chemical process that we do not expect to happen on rocky planets,” adds co-author and @mit_eaps Research Scientist Janusz Petkowski. Astronomers may have found a signature of life on Venus 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 Evidence indicates phosphine, a gas associated with living organisms, is present in the habitable region of Venus’ atmosphere. This does not mean that we will discover life SOON considering that methane has been discovered on Mars also back in 2003 and we have yet to discover some form of life there. Another good candidate is Saturns moon - Titan. There has also been found giant amounts of methane lakes. It is thought that there may be creatures living in these lakes which would take in hydrogen instead of oxygen and release methane instead of carbon dioxide. The Reappearance of Mars Image Credit & Copyright: David Duarte and Romualdo Caldas Explanation: Mars reappears just beyond the Moons dark limb in this stack of sharp video frames captured on September 6. Of course to reappear it had to disappear in the first place. It did that over an hour earlier when the sunlit southern edge of the waning gibbous Moon passed in front of the Red Planet as seen from Maceio, Brazil. The lunar occultation came as the Moon was near apogee, about 400,000 kilometers away. Mars was almost 180 times more distant. It was the fourth lunar occultation of Mars visible from planet Earth in 2020. Visible from some southern latitudes, the fifth lunar occultation of Mars in 2020 will take place on October 3 when the Moon and Mars are both nearly opposite the Sun in planet Earths sky. - @astro_photography_ on Instagram

We usually post Mondays to give us a shot of hope during these trying times but weve been at a loss for words. Nothing has prepared us for whats unfolding before our eyes. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and we are trying to understand how to be allies rather than silently supporting a system which disproportionately oppresses people of color. These are challenging times in which two opposing views can be right in that violence is not the answer while peaceful protesting has not moved the needle enough for true social change. We dont have the answers but our hearts are broken by how division is being sown around the world. We encourage empathy, love, and care and look forward to a day where celebration seems appropriate. - @globaleclipsegathering on Instagram

This months astrophoto feature is of The Occultation of Mars by our Moon and was taken by James Mack. James writes, On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 7:09:07 am the Red Planet Mars was occulted by our moon. A relatively rare event even though there are five occultations in 2020 that involve Mars, with this the only one visible in the U.S. and Central America. The others take place in March, August, September, and October, and are all mostly visible in the Southern Hemisphere. Occultations are very interesting not only intrinsically but scientifically. At the time of this event ... The Moon was a 24.8-day old waning crescent. With a Visual Magnitude of -7.9 and Apparent Size of 31.1 arc min and was 23.7% illuminated. Its Distance from Earth was 238,641 miles and its Diameter is 2,159 mi. Mars on the other hand with its Visual Magnitude of +1.2 and Apparent Size of 5.2 arc sec was 91.9% illuminated. Its Distance from earth was 167,956,633 mi and its Diameter is 4221 mi. This is part of our monthly feature of astrophotography submitted by members of the Local Group of Deep Sky Observers (LGDSO). @insertastronamehere blowing us away with the sharpest details weve seen!!! Great job! Keep up the great work! Lunar Sunrise Crater Aristarchus (top) and Kepler (bot r) from Saturday morning. The lunar surface was processed using masking and dodge/burn techniques to really emphasize the ray systems of each crater. The color was taken from the full disk image of the Moon I posted the other day by overlapping the images together, aligning the craters precisely, and blending them together. These craters, along with a handful of others, are part of the Copernican Period of Lunar Geography which runs from approximately 1.1 billion years ago to the present day. The base of the Copernican period is defined by impact craters that possess bright optically immature ray systems. Enjoy! #moon_of_the_day #rsa_night #milkywaychasers #moonphoto #astronomy #astrophoto #space #astrophotography #opteam #nightsky #solarsystem #skymasters #cosmos #ig_nightphotography #stargazing #telescope #universetoday #moonphotography #moonphases #celestron #spacephoto #natgeospace #Igtexas #nikonusa #likeabos - @optcorp on Instagram

Amazing shot of Saturn & our Moon 🌚😍. On the morning of May 14, 2014, the dance of the solar system brought together two unlikely partners: our Moon, and Saturn. As the Moon orbits the Earth, it makes a circle in the sky every month, and as Saturn orbits the Sun it too follows a circular but different path around our sky. ⁣⁣. . ✔For more ️, tag a friends 👥, like the post🖤 & Share with Spacelovers . . ➡️Follow:@isro.official.in ➡️Follow:@isro.official.in . . 🔷Hastags: 👇👇 #Galaxies #Planet #Planets #Moon #Galaxy #NASA#Spacex #Hubble #Space #Science #Scientist #Sciences#Astronomy #Universe #Galaxiesways #Telescope#Cosmos #Nebula #Supernova #Blackhole #Star #Stars#Astrology #Physics #Astronaut #Astrophysics#Astronomer #Elonmusk #Nature #Memes - @isro.official.in on Instagram

Not a day goes by that I don’t dream of exploring the other worlds that inhabit our solar system. More often than not, I find myself wondering what it would be like to visit the icy moon of Saturn called Enceladus. I’ve always found icy worlds to be especially interesting, even in science fiction. Hoth has always been my favourite planet from Star Wars. As strange as it may sound, I’ve always wanted to visit Antarctica. My love of ice worlds has me dreaming about visiting Enceladus. Orbiting Saturn at distance of 1.4 billion km away from the sun, Enceladus is an icy moon with a diameter of 504 km. Enceladus turned out to be one of the most unique worlds in our solar system, including being one of the most likely locations we’ll encounter alien life. Underneath its icy crust, astronomers believe there exists a subsurface ocean of liquid water. The first concrete proof of this subsurface ocean came from the discovery of geysers along the moon’s South Pole. Despite its size and distance from the sun, Enceladus is generating enough heat in its interior to power the moon’s geology. Small worlds don’t tend to be geologically active given that small objects lose heat a lot faster. Like some of the moons of Jupiter, the internal heat of Enceladus is caused by gravitational tidal forces that generate friction within the moon’s core. The heat is sufficient to melt subsurface ice and create a layer of liquid water. Occasionally this water finds its way to the surface in the form of large geysers that spew water into space. Some of this water falls back onto the surface as a fresh coating of snow. Most of it, however, escapes into space and becomes part of Saturn’s rings. During some of Cassini’s flybys of Enceladus, it flew directly through the geysers and sampled the water. Cassini found evidence of organic molecules, meaning that Enceladus has all of the stuff needed for life to form and flourish. The age old question to whether we’re alone or not may be closer than we ever imagined.
