The Pepiniano Venancio Román was caught in the fire of the Spanish militias. Instead of surrendering and allowing himself to be captured, he decided to fight the enemy and leave the following sentence for the story: I have come to fight, I have not come to flee ...! Live the freedom of Puerto Rico! In San Sebastián the most painful happened. The Spaniards, who had long been aware of the revolutionary plans, were waiting for them with the bulk of their troops. They were difficult moments. Ours gave a great show of courage and heroism. However, the combat was very uneven. The numerical advantage, the superiority in military preparation and armaments, in addition to the lack of the surprise element in the rebellion, were factors that weighed terribly against the patriots. Many died, others were injured. Those who survived go to the mountains and resist as brave. They will suffer the brutal repression of the Spanish government. The outcome was painful for us. Fighting in Lares, San Sebastián and nearby towns 20 patriots die. Dozens of wounded. Many suffer torture, among them Don Manuel Rojas, head of the Liberation Army. Hundreds who were imprisoned suffer the consequences of an epidemic that would cause the death of 80 of them. Among those who died fighting were: Baldomero Bauren, Matías Brugman, Leopoldo Plumey, Manuel de León, Venancio Román, Casto Santiago, N. Santiago, Francisco Santana and Bautista Toledo. Let us also remember the hero Manuel Rosado, El Leñero, bearer of the Lares flag. All die as heroes fighting for the independence of our homeland. As we process the heartbreaking execution of Navid Afkari, our champion wrestler, we remember Iran’s national hero Gholamreza Takhti whose fate tragically mirrors Navid Afkari. Takhti was an Iranian champion of wrestling and an Olympic gold medalist. He was a very successful athlete whose humility, political and philanthropic activities, along with his defiance against the injustice of the Shah’s regime made him a national hero. His opposition to the Shah and his support for Dr. Mossadegh led him to his death at the age of 37. On Jan 7th 1968, Takhti was found dead in his hotel room. Many believe that Takhti was assassinated by SAVAK agents. SAVAK was Iran’s intelligence agency during the Shah’s regime. An agency that was directly trained by the CIA. To this day, every Iranian remembers Takhti as a hero and a mythical symbol of resistance. His resistance became a symbol of Iran’s past and present, a hero in a fight against dictatorships that have enveloped our home. Takhti is remembered as “Pahlevān” a word that refers to a dignified, respectful, and honorable person carrying heroic feats with humility. A little history about the Mumford House: this two-story Stick/Eastlake style house was constructed circa 1880 by Joseph S. Mumford and was restored by artist and the founder of SOHO, the late Robert Miles Parker, pictured above. It was dubbed a historical landmark at some point after it’s restoration in the mid 1970s. Robert Miles Parker ultimately saved this house (and many others) from demolition by purchasing it in 1969 and dedicating the next few years to its restoration, starting San Diego’s modern preservation movement. A framed 1974 newspaper clipping from the San Diego Union (now the Union Tribune) sits in the foyer, and this evening I decided to dig a little deeper in the internet to see what other knowledge I could find about Robert and this property. A fascinating 1976 interview with Robert in San Diego Reader discusses the history of the property, and the seedy yet vibrant surrounding neighborhood of Banker’s Hill at the time. These photos are of Robert out front of the house, along with his drawing of the home. Sadly, Robert Miles Parker passed away in Manhattan, NYC, on April 17, 2012. We hope to carry on his passion for this property despite the many changes and habitants over the years. Whilst we called it quits on Summerlin, we didn’t stop writing music together. Thank you @samesizedfeet for this lil blast from the past. As far as I can recall we had just done an early radio station gig, like, 6am limo call time, champers in the limo (of course) and more champers at the gig. Afterwards @matthewjamesuk and I decided to hijack the limo and to go on a tour of London. And at this point, of course... morning drinking and all, we were shit faced. We bought fresh strawberries and more booze from Selfridges, like you do, and then drove around London, head out the moon roof screaming at people. Good times. Slept the rest of the day. La tradición de la resistencia de #CarlosMonsiváis les compartimos este fragmento en conmemoración del aniversario del movimiento estudiantil en la Ciudad de México el 2 de octubre.⠀ ⠀ ***⠀ ⠀ Se elige la Plaza de las Tres Culturas por la simpatía hacia los estudiantes y la valentía reiterada de los vecinos y, muy especialmente de las vecinas, y por el éxito de los mítines en el lugar. El 2 de octubre, al principio, parece un acto más, con su “escenografía móvil”: vendedores de la revista ¿Por qué? y de libros marxistas, niños y señoras que pasean, curiosos, atención intermitente a los discursos, vendedores de dulces y refrescos, fatiga de los que se van convenciendo: Díaz Ordaz jamás accederá al diálogo, lo que le obsesiona es el monólogo. Y esto transcurre entre ruinas prehispánicas, señales piadosas del virreinato y edificios que profetizan con argumentos la ruina inminente de su propia modernidad.
