This residence at 20 Margaret Street in St. Thomas was owned by Alfred John Allworth, a former resident of St. Thomas, who died in this home on February 17, 1897. He was married to Jane Kettlewell, who passed away in 1860, and his second wife was Mary Ann Claris, who died in 1875. Allworth was born in Westbury, Wiltshire, England on June 12, 1820 and immigrated on the Cosma with his family in April 1830, arriving in New York, before joining family, who had previously immigrated and settled, in Southwold Township (the Silcox family). His family settled on a farm in Frome, Ontario. In circa 1840s, Allworth moved to St. Thomas to work as a clerk for Edward Ermatinger. When the London and Port Stanley Railway was established, Allworth was appointed as station agent and worked in this position for 15 years. He later became the first manager of the Canada Southern Loan Company, and remained in this position for 21 years, until his health forced him to resign five years before his death in 1897. #LocalAdventureChallenge 6/30 ✅ : Drive the Nebo Loop (or alternative) Yesterday was the first day of autumn, and theres plenty of proof out there in the hills. This pic is from the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway, taken a few years ago. Did you know you can review it on Yelp? That trip was an inspiration for putting a fall foliage drive on our adventure list. Its a drive from SLC, but definitely worth it, especially in late September. This tour of fall foliage is incredible, from the lower aspens to the upper vistas it is spectacular. Both ends have great burger shack options—Nebo Queen @theneboqueen in Nephi and Daley Freez in Payson—so you can drive it north to south or vice versa and still get those fried cheese curds or onion rings. In 1910, William K. Vanderbilt II purchased this waterfront property in Centerport, NY as a getaway from the city and its social scene. Vanderbilt named his new estate “Eagle’s Nest” and had a small, 7-room English bungalow built overlooking the bay. By the 1930s though, after inheriting $23 million from his father, traveling around the world for his scientific expeditions, and marrying his second wife, Vanderbilt’s life had changed quite a bit, and the little house changed with him. The Indian Falls Interpretive trail got some major improvements this week. Here is the crew making progress on the staircases for the trail. Its a short but steep hike to see Indian Falls. When trails need to be above grade, staircases are installed to help decrease erosion. By using native rock to build the staircase the crew created a durable surface for users while decreasing soil runoff into Indian Creek. Arizona Road Trip: Jerome Jerome was founded in 1876 and was once the 4th largest town in Arizona Territory. The population peaked at 15,000 but is now a mere 450. Jerome is an old mining town turned into a trendy, eclectic hilltop artist community. Not far from Sedona, Jerome boasts sweeping views and many art studios, galleries, and saloons/biker bars. The drive to Jerome is not one you’ll soon forget given the narrow and steep ascent, but the views once you arrive are breathtaking. Should you be a fan of ghost stories, be sure to stay at The Jerome Grand Hotel which sits atop the hill overlooking the Verde Valley. Formerly the United Verde Hospital, the five-story Spanish Mission-style building projects the coolest Frankensteinesque-castle vibe in Arizona. The hospital closed in 1950 and remained empty for decades until it was reinvented as a hotel. If you are looking for a great place to eat, the Asylum restaurant at the Jerome Grand Hotel occupies the lower floor. The maroon walls, large windows overlooking the town, and comfortable furniture make for a warm, romantic setting. Another must-see for a “bite” to eat, is The Haunted Hamburger. In 1983, the historic building was moved from its original location at 7881 Government Road to the Burnaby Village Museum and in April 1987 the school was opened to the public as part of the Museum’s permanent exhibition. Pictured in this post: 1) This 1896 image faces north on Avenue D. The large two-story building with five windows above housed Willis Myers’ Lobby Pool and Billiard Parlor on its first floor. The second floor was the location of the incorporation meeting that brought the City of Miami into existence. 2) The grounds of Ft. Dallas, Julia Tuttle’s homestead, shortly before Flagler’s first visit. This image looks east towards the mouth of the Miami River and bay. The Brickells’ trading post is visible top right, across the river. 3) Makeshift huts in the woods near Tuttles property that were hastily constructed by 95ers who rushed into Miami after it was announced that a new Flagler town would be built at Miami. 4) This 1895 image depicts an “early view of 1st Street.” This may be either today’s S. 1st Street, in downtown, or N. 1st Street, two blocks farther north, or it may be the original “1st Street,” today known as N. 11th Street - the northern extremity of the planned city. 5) A family outside their home in 1896. 6) Early street scene on North Miami Avenue in 1896. 7) A view looking north on Avenue D, todays Miami Avenue, in 1896. 8) Group of people gathered on East Flagler Street at 1st Avenue in 1896. Muchas personas creen que en estos sectores no hay valor para conservar ya que solo se ve pino y eucaliptos pero están completamente equivocados. Great news! Port Coquitlam restaurants & businesses can continue to serve customers in outdoor spaces such as streets & sidewalks until the end of Oct 2021. Tuesday night, City Council agreed to extend a program it introduced in May that allows businesses to use public rights-of-way such as streets, sidewalks and parking lots for commercial activities such as patios, lineups and product displays. The Liquor Control and Regulation Branch is being advised of this change which will allow businesses to continue operating uninterrupted. City staff continue to work with businesses to provide advice about how they can meet the regulatory and insurance requirements. On this day in 1879, a fire raged through Deadwood, destroying over 300 buildings and leaving 2,000 people homeless. The fire started in a bakery on Sherman Street and quickly spread through town. Loin du tumulte citadin, l’Ile d’Aix, petit croissant de terre classé sur la liste des sites remarquables, est une île exceptionnelle où l’on oubli le temps, et pourtant le temps passé, à laisser son empreinte gravée sur elle. Fragile et isolée, Napoléon 1er ordonne en 1806 de mettre l’île en état de défense. Quelques années plus tard, s’invitant à constater lui-même les travaux de fortification, il y fît construire, entres autres, la maison du gouverneur (l’actuel Musée Napoléon). C’est ainsi qu’en 1815, au lendemain de la bataille de Waterloo, Napoléon 1er décida de passer ses 3 derniers jours en terre de France à l’Ile d’Aix, dans la maison du gouverneur, avant de se rendre aux autorités anglaises puis d’être exilé à Sainte Hélène. Presque 1 siècle plus tard, l’arrière-arrière petit fils de l’aide de camp de Napoléon, le baron Gourgaud, féru d’histoires impériales, et sa compagne américaine la baronne Eva Gebhard, ont accostés sur ce petit joyau de l’océan atlantique, puis vite s’en sont épris et constatant nombres de bâtiments en ruine, ont ainsi créé l’Association Des Amis De l’Ile d’Aix. C’est de cette union que L’Hotel Napoleon fut créée.
