On sept 22, 1997, on the anniversary of Mali’s independence, we recorded Toumani Diabaté (right) and Ballaké Sissoko for what I think is probably the best kora album of all time : New Ancient Strings. Sublime kora duets. One of the tracks, Cheikhna Demba, was used by ORTM (Mali’s national TV & radio station) for their signature tune for nearly ten years. A simple recording on two Nagras with only four microphones and no added reverb - all recorded in one single night. Minister Grange Deeply Saddened at the Passing of Toots Hibbert Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport the Honourable Olivia Grange has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Reggae legend Frederick Toots Hibbert. The 77 year old Toots passed away in hospital last night, Friday, September 11. He was undergoing treatment for respiratory complications and had been placed in a medically induced coma. I cant adequately express how much this hurts. Toots was a product of the West Kingston Cultural Movement and I have known him for decades. I remained very optimistic that he would pull through but it didnt end that way. I am praying and sending thoughts of hope and strength to his wife and family. Jamaica is grateful for his life and work and the contribution he made to the development of Reggae Music, Minister Grange said. “Just recently he participated in the Festival Song Competition of which he was the first winner in 1966. It was a demonstration of his commitment to Jamaica. Toots was well loved across the music world and his wonderful character and vocal abilities will be missed. You’re the senior in-house engineer and producer at Atlantic and you’re one of the 5% of female engineers and 2.1% of female producers; how would having more diversity in producing and engineer affect the outcome/impact the landscape of music? Producers and engineers bring their individual lived experiences to the work they do in the studio. This affects creative perspective and adds to the innovation of unique approaches to music making and production. The World Bank estimates that women account for 4 billion people around the world. When their creatives voices are stifled, humanity’s ability to reach its full potential is also stifled. 2. Arguably, a lot of mainstream public is aware of the producer in the creative, music making process, however not the engineer. How important is it for artists to find an engineer that compliments their style, work, and vision? What advice do you have artists that are mixing at home, especially during quarantine, or don’t have access to a proper engineer? The engineer is the technical liaison between the artist or producer and the recording equipment. Therefore, the engineer is critical to an artist developing a unique sound. Now is a challenging time for artists who don’t have much technical ability, but it’s also a good opportunity for them to start learning the technical aspects of music making. It gives them more control in the studio when they can speak the language of producers and engineers. If you’re an artist looking to record at this time, you probably have an @apple laptop, iPhone, or iPad. All these devices are equipped with #GarageBand. Charles Tolliver is a master of all trades. The New York-based trumpeter, active since the 1960s, is a leading player, educator, big band leader, composer, and founder of the one of the greatest jazz labels of all time, Strata East. Today, he has released his first studio album in 13 years via Gearbox Records, entitled Connect. Recorded to tape at RAK Studios last November by Tony Platt (Bob Marley, Jazz Jamaica All Stars, Abdullah Ibrahim) and Nathanael Graham as assistant engineer, the line-up features top musicians from the New York jazz scene who have collectively played with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Nancy Wilson, and Chick Corea. Forming as the Charles Tolliver All Stars, the band includes Jesse Davis on alto saxophone, Keith Brown on piano, Buster Williams on double bass, and Lenny White on drums. For all the gear heads, I wanted to share a vital piece of gear from my studio bc this synth has been a game changer for me! Meet my Korg Prologue. I use it as my main midi controller and have the built in sounds always “live” + midi thru to my other hardware. Bass tones, leads, pads, pluckies, risers, swellies, minties, tim tams and flim flams, this little bad boy does it all and is super fun and easy to tweak. It doesn’t really have any “organic” tones. Today I want to talk about the history of the balafon and the marimba. The balafon is a struck idiophone from west africa, traditionally played from Guinea to Mali, and it dates at least to the 12th century.(1) Meanwhile the marimba is an instrument that developed in the areas of the Guatemala-Mexico (Chiapas) border, this instrument was a result of the african slaves brought to the american continent (the americas). The word marimba comes from the Bantu languages, spoken in south and central Africa, this is the main reason why some people believe that that the marimba didnt developed from the balafon but a close cousin of this instrument, since the balafon is played mainly in west africa, although this cant be known for sure. (2) Later on the marimba evolved into the concert marimba, becoming worldwide famous and being very used nowadays in classical, jazz and popular music. For the year of 2020, Sahel Sounds presents Music from Saharan WhatsApp. Every month, well be releasing an EP from a musical group in the Sahel. Every album will be recorded on a cellphone, transmitted over WhatsApp, and uploaded to Bandcamp, where it will live for one month only. Available for pay as you want, 100% of the sales will go directly to the artist or group. After one month, the album will be replaced by another one, until the end of the year. Hama is an electronic musician based in Niamey, Niger. His instrumental compositions take familiar Nigerien folk music transposed through synthesizer. Heavily influenced by 90s hip hop and techno, Hamas unique sound is known throughout the country. In 2015, we reissued Torodi, compiled from his signature Arabic synthesizer (unfortunately since destroyed in a house fire). In 2019, Hama created the multilayered Houmeissa, with arrangements in FruityLoops and Reason. For this WhatsApp entry, he returns to live recordings with a late-night performance at home with a newly acquired synthesizer. Configurando um controlador no Ableton Live!⠀ ⠀ Uma das aplicações mais úteis em um controlador é integrar um sistema de produção musical. Um dos softwares mais utilizados atualmente, devido a seu poder, sua flexibilidade e utilização amigável é o Ableton Live. ⠀ ⠀ Vamos falar um pouco sobre como podemos integrar controladores a ele e como isso pode auxiliar nossa vida na hora da criação musical. Vamos por partes e com calma, ok?⠀ ⠀ 1⃣ O objetivo é configurar os principais controles virtuais do software de maneira que eles obedeçam aos botões, Sliders e knobs físicos do controlador, possibilitando um controle muito mais ágil dos parâmetros de edição e gravação. Além de abrir novas possibilidades criativas, pois com controles físicos interagimos com diversos comandos ao mesmo tempo, o que é impossível de fazer usando apenas o mouse. ⠀ ⠀ 2⃣ Normalmente o Ableton Live já possui pré-instalado o mapeamento para muitos dos controladores existentes no mercado. Dessa forma é bastante simples de configurarmos nosso controlador.⠀ ⠀ 3⃣ Abra a janela de Preferências do Ableton Live. Essa janela é acessada pelo menu Options, existente na barra de cabeçalho ou pelo atalho Ctrl + , (apertando a tecla Ctrl e a tecla vírgula juntos). Dentro dessa janela, devemos escolher a aba “Link MIDI”.
