My morning rides have been a way for me to learn now to change my routine. For the past 16 years, I had gotten up every morning and walked, at the time, my two dogs. They are the ones who inspired me to start taking photographs. Now, a week after the second of my two dogs has now joined the other in the heavens, I am learning how to be by myself again without being surrounded by their unconditional love. I’m learning how to give myself the unconditional love that my dogs taught me all humans need. Cycling is now my therapy. The 15 pounds of love that lays heavy in my heart gets lighter when I cry. It’s been exactly a month since we moved here. It’s both stretched on and on, and also happened all at once. We haven’t really left the property the entire time (except for my daily walk today the marina), and it’s the first time I’ve watched spring unfold day by day at the house. I know the order of the blooming flowers and trees. Daffodil. Forsythia. Hyacinth. Peach tree. Bleeding Heart. Apple tree. Lilac. Dogwood. Azalea. I know what time the deer come down their paths at dusk. And when the fox screams early morning. The mountains across the river turn red each day at 4pm and I’m up every morning just before 7. Winds reached a maximum of 90 MPH at Kalmus Beach in Hyannis. You can see the power this tornado brought by knocking over a sturdy tree into the roadway, taking out a car in the process. (No idea what took us so long... when we first moved in we tried to fit the bed across from the doors like this but our bedside dresser and writing desk wouldn’t both fit so we put it all on another wall, thinking we’d eventually get a smaller nightstand on one side and move back but forgot all about it. Were replacing a decent size widow on an older home and ran across a nest of arthopods that had been happily dining on a smorgasbord of vintage cellulosic fiber. .. While the crew served eviction notices to the ants and pulled out the once rigid now spongy wood, we chatted about why theyd made a home there in the first place, and what it took to make this a less attractive dwelling in the future. .. But this isnt a post about water management, its a post about eusocial organisms; organisms that live in extreme states of cooperation. Where the group functions more like an individual (or another way of putting it, the individual is functioning as part of a whole, and not as a piece unto themselves). .. While humans, especially Americans are not an example of eusocial organisms, when we look for examples of human success, we see strong community and collaborative culture. .. When we look for examples of human failure, we find individuals who put themselves in front of others, individual gain over community gain, personal power over community strength. .. Companies that undercut other companies, damage the industry. Companies that short cut the process, damage others down the line. .. Imagine how great our industry could be if we all worked together to establish best practices beyond code minimums. If we created a baseline for what constitutes design. If we all agreed to test in and test out. If we all agreed to do away with gimmicks and deceptive sales tactics. If we rejected the lobbying efforts of the NAHB to cheapen our industry and destroy our environment, and took positions of integrity around our work, the land, the occupants, and the future of our ecosystem. .. Some more shots from Wethersfield, the residence of Chauncey Stillman in Dutchess County, NY. The home was designed in 1939 by Bancel LaFarge, who came from a multi-generational family of prominent artists. The house and its contents are a wonderful time capsule of 1940’s design that include the decorative painting of Hight Moore and the Renaissance inspired murals of Pietro Annigoni. Just turned in our drawings to the historic board for a renovation/addition to this 1923 home designed by Owen James Southwell. Southwell was originally from New Iberia, Louisiana - just a hop, skip, and a jump in Acadiana from my hometown of Lafayette! I was so excited to learn that fact. This is a very early example of “green” architecture in that the columns and ornamental ironwork were salvaged pieces from the old Georgia Governor’s Mansion that was demolished downtown in 1923. It is a truly unique home. This solid Italianate-style home was built circa 1881. It features a three-foot thick stone foundation and sturdy roof rafters formed from three trunks split in half. The first known occupant of this house was Dr. Oronhyatekha, a Mohawk from the Six Nations who lived in this house from 1881 to 1889. “Dr. O” is the first known indigenous Oxford scholar and the second individual of indigenous descent to become a physician in Canada. In 1878, while living in London, he applied to become a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, a fraternal insurance company. By 1881 he had become Supreme Chief Ranger of Foresters (IOF), the organizations international leader, and held the position for 26 years. Dr. O played a pivotal role in the growth and financial stabilization of the IOF during his tenure. Dr. O was designated a Person of National Historic Significance by Parks Canada in the early 2000s.
