We rescued her at 2 years old from an abusive home. She has since then had a long and healthy life. Seeing this photo remind me of this. Poppy has developed a limp and can’t go far from home. There are certain types of litter that are worse than others which are found when walking. It is concerning to find a needle, let alone over 10 of them in one location. It is not a nice thought that a number of these had been floating along the river, potentially ending up in a location where people may come into contact with them. Great day out on the deerfield river out in Western, ma. About 2 hours from Boston and deep into the woods. White water in the Zoar gap with lots of water because of the dam release. Lots of sun, and we got to meet the local police and rescue crew because we lost a kayak and they thought there might be a body to go with it. Exactly 4.3 miles down my loose sand pig trail of a dirt road. Somewhere near cocaine beach. The most majestic of sandbars on the most majestic of rivers. White as angel wings and piled by the current into a giant mound of powder that would make Richard Pryor blush, except for it’s just sand. Yes cocaine beach. Where the big rigs blow as they pass up on the bridge and the poetry drips from the cypress trees like the chorus of an old hymn. Where Ricky fell in love with Suzy and if you need proof look no further than the columns under the bridge where you’ll find it spray painted for all eternity. To be unearthed by children of the future who might guess as to who or what we actually were but as to our love they will have no doubt. For it screams like a coyote in the night surrounded by the songs of a thousand million insects as they fill the pineywoods and the stars envelop the Waverly sky like a celestial cast net thrown from above. Love of place. Souega. Land of milk and honey. Of course we slept like babies cradled in the pure bliss of it all as the outside world reckoned and wrestled with itself.
