Sonic Biogenesis: Genomics and Mutant Jungles Guillermo Galindo Kala Arts September 24, 2020 — November 28, 2020 Sonic Biogenesis: Genomics and Mutant Jungles features Galindo’s “genome scores” which are graphic representations of his musical compositions and artwork showing the texture of plants, animals, and microbes. These pieces illustrate, in Galindo’s unique symbolic language, how research and data have historically expressed and sustained systems of power, particularly relating to colonialism. The intention of this exhibition is to demonstrate how science, while often considered to be neutral and objective, played – and continues to play – a role in colonizing and conquest. For instance, naturalists were often motivated by the desire for new remedies to treat European ailments (economic or medical) to continue their exploitation of the “New World.” Similarly, biotech corporations today push the boundaries of ethics and possibility as they seek to modify the environment and creatures to best suit the needs of humans. «Plastic and whales» Water plays a big role in this project (water in the park and a view of the river). In this picture I wanted to hyperbolize this connection. I wanted to show turbid water (which still does not lose its beauty) as a continuation of the previously mentioned pollution topic. I did not want to create a picture of a post-apocalyptic flooded city. I wanted to give a feeling of weird dream. When real objects meet those that cannot be there. This picture is not some kind of manifesto or appeal. This is a strange dream of an ordinary resident of HUYA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I recently lost my serving job and had to close Guru’s storefront for the unforeseeable future. I took a couple of days to process what I’ve been feeling while navigating these recent, unsettling days. In this time of uncertainty and stress, I turned to what always feels right...Helping when I can. I have an outlet I can use to do good. I mean, my mind crossed all of the times God waited for me. That He watched me deny Him and curse Him and roll my eyes up at Him, and yet He still loved me? I was in such awe that anyone would love me even after I was such a, well, jerk. And then I woke up. God asked me, “Do you love me, or do you love what I offer you?” I replied, “Of course I love you, God! I have sacrificed for You and I pray to You, and I wouldn’t spend time with You willingly if I didn’t love You.” I was very stubborn, as you can tell. But then, He asked me, “If you could have everything you wanted in heaven, except Jesus, would you still be happy? You could have unlimited happiness and all the people you’ve ever loved on earth and every single thing you’ve ever dreamed of in heaven. Except for Jesus. Would you still be happy?” Ask yourself that. Right now. Would you, you yourself, still be happy? Not your parents. Not your siblings. Not your friends. Would YOU still be happy? Jesus loves you. So pray to Him. Ask Him to open up your eyes. To realize how much He really loves you. So you can love Him. With all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength.
