- “Barber, painstakingly draw in my hairline, eyebrows, sideburns, mustache and beard please.”

Martin Luther King Jr. had stayed up until four in the morning the night before the March on Washington, 57 years ago today. And when he finished, he still wasn’t completely satisfied with the end product. He simply ran out of time. What could one really accomplish in five minutes, the time limit for all the speakers that day? King was making his way through his speech when he heard the voice of Mahalia Jackson, the “Queen of Gospel” who had traveled around with King to sing songs in places he gave talks. Jackson had sung two spirituals that day and was no more than 10 feet away from King (circled in red) when, in the middle of the speech she yelled, “Tell them about the dream Martin!” King lit up. He knew what she meant. She was with him in various cities when he uttered the words “I Have A Dream,” with a specific phrase or two about that city. King looked up from his paper and diverted his path. “I say to you today my friends, so although we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I have a Dream.” And the rest is history. King’s tangent became the title of his speech, which was named the best speech of the 20th Century by American Rhetoric. Troy Davis was executed in Georgia nine years ago. There was so much evidence pointing to Troy’s innocence. The courts and other decision-makers disregarded all of it. On the morning of his scheduled execution, Troy shared this message with the world: “The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davis’s who came before me and all the ones who will come after me.” We remember you, Troy, and we continue the fight to end the death penalty. #troydavis #iamtroydavis #racialinjustice #deathpenalty #deathrow #endthedeathpenalty #georgia #innocenceproject #innocence - @lapubdefunion on Instagram

As I sit here and watch what’s happening in our country, it makes me sad. Not sad about being an American, but sad that some people call themselves Americans. There’s an old saying, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but nowadays it seems that much of this country is judging most “books” by their “covers”. The definition of ignorant is “lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about a particular thing”, so if you decide what you think about a person you’ve never met simply because they are a certain race, have certain beliefs that they stand up for, or have a certain profession, then based on the definition, you are ignorant. There are white and black criminals, some are good people that chose the wrong path and some are simply bad people. Most of us have a friend or family member that may have made poor decisions but we know they are good inside. We can’t “hate” someone simply because they have a criminal past. There are police officers who chose the profession for the right reasons, to do good and to make the world safe. Many of us have a friend of family member who puts their life on the line to protect the community and we know they would never be a part of some of the injustices we have seen. Unfortunately there are bad police officers who abuse their power and have chosen the profession for the wrong reasons. We can’t “hate” all police officers because some of them have done horrible things. There are protestors who genuinely want to voice what they believe in to make real change and there are rioters/looters who USE protests as an excuse to steal, create violence, and destroy peoples’ businesses. We can’t “hate” all protesters because of the violence created by rioters and looters. Martin Luther King said it best, “Let no man pull you low enough to hate him”. Think about that for a minute. This was a man who had EVERY reason to HATE. This was a man who had the platform to spread HATE wherever he wanted. Instead he preached PEACE. Instead he preached UNITY. Instead he dreamed of the day that WE would all come TOGETHER. We are a long way from “together”…but if we can curb the hate (and ignorance)…TOGETHER may be closer than we think. 🙏🙏🙏 - @michaelbires on Instagram

This whole conversation is available on YouTube. Runtime is approximately 50 minutes. - “All the liberal movements that I have ever been associated with and all the liberals—almost all the liberals, and the exceptions only prove the rule—all the liberals I have ever known are working day and night not only in terms of not letting a negro live next door to them, but in terms of their own minds, their own consciences, their own way of life to protect themselves against the crime that which they know they are responsible.” - Baldwin • “Does this country mean to be what it says it is? Are we free or are we not? We can only decide this one way. If the country wants to be free then it has got to do something to prove it.” - Baldwin • “What this country is not prepared to do is to overnight become a radical country. When I say ‘radical’ I mean to really reexamine and overhaul the entire social fabric.” - Baldwin • “If the ex-slave in America has to go to war with his former slave master to get what is his by right then that in itself is a condemnation of the former slave master. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation 100 years ago which means we’re supposed to be free, we’re supposed to be citizens, we’re supposed to be protected by the constitution that we fight and die for and yet at the same time today the so called negro is knocking on the White House door still begging his master to pass legislation that will get him recognition or protection by the constitution that is supposed to represent him. I think that the man who is depriving him of these rights should not open up his mouth and say that it would be wrong to go to war against him to get these things.” - X • “We are not relying on politicians for a political solution because experience has taught us that in the past the politicians have promised but never delivered and if we rely on the politicians we feel like we’d be going right round in circles like our people have been doing here in America one hundred years since Lincoln issued the so called Emancipation Proclamation.” - X - @reading4freedom on Instagram
