American Beauty || 1999 || Director: Sam Mendes || American Beauty, over time, has fallen out of favor by critics. One of those films, like Crash, who also won a handful of Oscars, that people say didn’t deserve them nor do they stand the test of time. However, I’m not sure if I agree with them. Well, I agree with them on Crash, I never thought Crash was remotely good but I can still watch American Beauty and enjoy Sam Mendes’ craftsmanship, Conrad Hall’s cinematography, the actors, particularly Annette Bening’s performance, and feel good about it because everything I disliked about it back when I saw it is everything I still dislike about it and everything I loved about it I still love. Now... the story. In short, Lester Burnham, a 40something Kevin Spacey, loses his job and decides he’s going to workout and smoke weed and start “living life. Woke.” A tale of total irresponsibility disguised as righteous self-discovery. Fuck everything else. Not his problem. Let’s not forget the ultimate Lolita-like crush on his daughter’s best friend, if friend is what you could call her. Sounds awful and... it is, but... it’s so well done and so true to the white, upper-middle class suburban facade. To me, it was like... no matter how good things look on the outside, it’s never what it appears to be. My mom and I were so poor when I was in high school I ate once a day at someone else’s house. I knew so many families, kids who went to my school, whose lives looked exactly like Lester’s. And for as poor as we were, we were fairly normal. There were a lot of really dysfunctional families around me, but you would never know it by looking at just the surface. At a young age I couldn’t tell. Then I got a little older and saw things unravel for people I thought were perfect, had it all figured out because they had a nice place to live and I didn’t. This movie kind of deconstructs that myth and shows us that no matter how old we are, we don’t always have it figured out. Very few people do.
