Meet River: Ever since River was a toddler my mommy senses could tell that something was different. But, when I would talk with certain family members or friends about my concerns, it was dismissed for years. It wasnt until this year when the schools shut down...and a cousin of mine (who was an RN-BSN), started to notice some of his behaviors. And had a beautiful conversation with me. It was almost déjà vu. One of my sisters (who happened to be a teacher) had a similar conversation. It finally clicked with me that I was allowing those who had doubt, cloud my mommy instincts and it was time to get him tested for autism. What Ive realized is that those people who dismissed me are uneducated on the subject matter and full of misconceptions. I feel it is now my lifes purpose, as a mother of a newly diagnosed autistic child, to spread information about autism. It looks different on each human and the world needs more education and I plan to do my part until something clicks with societys acceptance. River is a very inquisitive child who loves to understand how things work. He has trouble with expressing emotions into words when hes upset. His eye contact, or lack of, during these moments, is just a reminder for me to take a step back and help him process the world going on around him. River has the best smile and those moments when he will actually hug me on his own or kiss me are the moments I live for! September is childhood cancer awareness month. Meet Riley! At the age of 11 Riley was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Chemo treatments started immediately and he seemed to be getting worse and worse, but he stayed strong. He started having these random episodes where hed just space out, going completely unresponsive to touch, sound, sight, hed just stare forward looking scared or hurt, and he also would randomly pass out. He began having seizures and was then was taken to the hospital where he was also diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, brain cancer. He is fighting two cancers at the same time! How to Reduce Noise in Photos Today, some tips for how to reduce noise in photos, both in camera, and in processing.... When shooting in low light conditions, we generally have to compensate for the lack of light in the scene by bumping up our ISO setting. This is great as it allows us to shoot without using flash, but the problem with using these high ISOs numbers is that it can introduce noise to your images - the stuff that looks like grain or speckles. This puts a lot of people off shooting with high ISOs, but there are a couple of things you can do to minimise the noise and get the best images in low light...... 1) Get more Light The easiest way to not get noise is to keep your ISO setting reasonably low in the first place. To do this, try to physically get more light on your subject - open the blinds, shutters, or move your subject to a location that has a bit more light coming in. Although you could try using a slightly slower shutter speed or a wider aperture, you need to be very careful that by doing so you arent swapping one problem for another! If your shutter speed is too slow, that can cause motion blur which will result in a soft picture. Similarly, too large an aperture might also give you problems, as it can be difficult to get precise focus, and you can end up getting an eyebrow in sharp focus instead of the eye! You can fix noise in processing to a certain degree, but not missed focus and motion blur, so I would rather have a noisy image than a soft one. So, get your subject into the best light you can, set your aperture and your shutter speed as you need for the picture, and once you have done all you can in that regard, use the ISO setting you need to get a correctly exposed picture - even if this means a high ISO. In the image above - which was taken as a test image - you can see how close I have my subject to the light source, in this case the window. This meant I could use an ISO of 640 even though it was dull and overcast outside, and there was not a lot of light in the room. Had we moved further away from the window, I would have needed a higher ISO. 2) Expose Correctly In Camera (Or Over Expose) - @photographytutorials on Instagram
In the fight to end domestic violence, you meet so many incredible and courageous advocates. People like Ana Estevez, who is from the San Gabriel Valley. Three years ago, her 5-year-old son, Aramazd Piqui Andressian Jr., was murdered by his own father. Before that happened, Ana fought to protect her son during contentious family court hearings. But certain evidence describing psychologically damaging and abusive behavior, or coercive control, was largely ignored. Thats why Ana and other advocates are supporting my Senate Bill 1141, which is now being heard in the State Assembly. SB 1141 expands protections for survivors by allowing them to describe their abuser’s coercive control as supporting evidence in family court hearings and criminal trials. How Can You Enforce Limits If You Dont Use Force?⠀ ⠀ Im struggling with how to enforce limits without a consequence. For example, brushing teeth -- shell refuse. Its not reasonable for me to do it by force, so I tell her if she cant brush her teeth, I cant read a bedtime story to her. I do not understand how to set limits if there are no consequences for ignoring the limit.⠀ ⠀ Great question! How do we make our child do what we want, if we dont use force? And brushing teeth is a perfect example, because Ive never met a child who was internally motivated to brush his teeth -- or a parent who hasnt been frustrated trying to get kids to brush. Naturally, were tempted to threaten our child with punishment. That is, in fact, the only way to make a human do something they dont want to do. But look at the cost:⠀ ⠀ It removes from the bedtime routine the one thing that brings our child closer (the bedtime story.) Result: a child who is LESS motivated to cooperate, now and with more important issues.⠀ ⠀ You lose the opportunity to read with your child, which is arguably one of the most important parent-child interactions in your day, both intellectually and emotionally.⠀ It creates a power struggle by using threats to gain compliance, instead of creating a relationship where our child WANTS to cooperate. What will we do when our child is not motivated by this particular threat? Well have to up the ante, by threatening a bigger consequence. This #FamilyFriday brings us a wonderful sense of encouragement! Meet Kathryn! Over 11 years ago, she was a feverish 6-year-old entering into the first week of first grade. After a clinic visit, and the discovery of a dangerously high white blood cell count, she was brought to the closest children’s hospital. Here she was diagnosed with leukemia and began treatment. Kathryn was a year into treatment when a lump was discovered on her neck and she was diagnosed with a second cancer, lymphoma. Her sister was a perfect match for a BMT and fortunately, it worked! Although Kathryns treatment was harsh and the late effects still linger, she and her family are grateful for the gift of her life. Kathryn is now a senior in high school and soon to be celebrating her 18th birthday! Please join us in cheering on this amazing survivor!
