i allow myself to make mistakes, and i forgive myself often. This is how i learn and play and take myself lightly as i grow. Perfectionism and self-criticism are strategies we may have learned to meet deeper and underlying needs. Sometimes, the strategy of perfectionism or self-criticism is a conditioned response to a need to be acceptable and accepted, to belong, to be seen or heard, to be loved and respected. These are basic and valid human needs, who doesnt need and want to belong or be loved?! We have different strategies to meet those human needs though- and often, those strategies like perfectionism and inner criticism hurt like hell or hold us back. Questions for pondering... What would it be like to notice what our needs are beneath these unserving strategies, and to learn to care for those needs directly and lovingly vs. habitually and painfully? What would it be like to recognize that, oh, this craving to be perfect came from learning early on that i needed to be a good girl to get mamas hugs and smile...and i still want that now, i want someone to smile at me adoringly and i want to feel loved... And what would it be like to then give that to ourselves first? To look at ourselves adoringly in the mirror- when weve made a mistake or not- and let ourselves know through loving eyes, hey bb, youre allowed to make mistakes and youre still worthy, interesting and dope as fuck. i love you. Lili Reinhart has explained why she waited to publicly come out as bisexual. The 24-year-old actress, best known for her role as Betty Cooper on Riverdale, came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month, telling fans that she identifies as a “proud bisexual woman”. In a new interview with Jeffrey Masters for LGBTQ&A, a podcast produced by The Advocate magazine, Reinhart said she refrained from coming out as bisexual sooner because of the harmful stereotypes and assumptions that still surround the community. “I’ve wanted people to know that I am bisexual, but I’ve never felt that there was a right time to do it,” she admitted. “I was afraid of coming out. I didn’t want people to tell me that I was lying to get attention or something. And so I just kept my mouth shut. “I also I’ve told people in the past and they’ve told me, ‘Oh, it’s a phase.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, great, thanks.’ So that’s discouraging, obviously.” Reinhart said she attempted to come out as “nonchalantly as possible” because she doesn’t consider a person’s sexuality to be a “big deal,” adding: “The way I look at the world right now, I’m like, ‘Isn’t everyone bisexual?’ “So I didn’t really feel like this was any breaking news by any means. I’m about to get vulnerable so please don’t @ me. All day I have been watching this #blackouttuesday movement unfold and I do think it’s great. But it has also amplified a lot of the anxieties and questions I have about my own Black identity. I often feel like I cannot talk about the discrimination and racism I have experienced because I know others have it worse. I know I am valid in my experiences, but at times I feel like I am not allowed to participate in these discussions as I am only half Black. I’m just sad. And tired. My Black identity is always being called into question by others and it’s something I do myself on a daily basis. I have to remind myself that there is no wrong way to be Black. And my experiences are valid - because honestly, no English speaking kindergartener should be forced into ESL on their first day of school based on the colour of their skin. Just to give some perspective. I still stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters to fight for justice. But please know that me, and many others, are tired of having to explain ourselves. Racism is real. Black lives matter. These aren’t political statements, they are facts. And while I am glad that many are fighting for us, please know that this is not a one day fight for Black folk. This is a lot bigger than just ABS CBN. Its not a coincidence that the anti-terror bill was quickly passed during these hearings. This all sets a truly terrifying precedent for our country. Silencing the press, preventing the ability to protest, all while using an army of hired internet trolls to control and spread disinformation on Facebook. Most of this country is too poor to afford internet and relies on the free internet provided by Facebook. These people are easily succeptible to the torrent of lies and propaganda spread by this administrations hired lackeys. One of the most important jobs we have as the media is to call out bullshit when we see it. If this government can freely and unjustly shut down the press, silence dissent, all while spreading disinformation and taking advantage of those that are vulnerable, what do you call that? Its called fucking tyranny. In a political system with so much visible and widespread corruption, the medias role as a check/balance is of the utmost importance. As the system is set up right now, cops are being asked to juggle too many tasks. We are asking cops to be mental health professionals, traffic safety enforcers, experts when it comes to sexual assaults, interpersonal communication specialists, experts when it comes to solving our homelessness crisis, experts in de-escalation… the list goes on and on. So what does Defunding the Police actually mean? It means a thoughtful reallocation of police funds to improve our social systems. This would make way for things like the decriminalization of mental health issues (people are treated/healed as opposed to being put in jail), professional de-escalation specialists, social systems (like affordable housing, counseling, healthcare) that would make for a safer and healthier community. WHY ISN’T THE GOAL TO PREVENT CRIME BEFORE IT HAPPENS BY ELIMINATING THE ISSUES THAT TYPICALLY LEAD TO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY? WHY IS OUR GOAL TO CONTROL CRIMINALS AND FILL QUOTAS? The connection between an offense-based police system and police brutality is undeniable. As white Americans, we have been tuning out the voice of the BIPOC communities who have been saying this for years. We have decided to care now that we see police brutality in our own families. We need to recognize that we are joining the movement late and fight even harder for the benefit of out country while realizing that we have also enabled the problem. We are not experts in this. We are still learning. We are still trying to reconcile our part in this horrific system.
