SFC Joseph Celestine by Susan Ellen. In 2011 The Columbus Museum contracted Savannah-based photographer Ellen Susan to take likenesses of several soldiers from nearby Fort Benning, using nineteenth-century techniques. The artist had previously created similar portraits of service members from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield in southeastern Georgia. About this haunting overarching group of images, the artist explained: I felt that the 150-year old collodion process could be a meaningful way to photograph contemporary soldiers, to provide a counterpoint to the anonymous representations of soldiers seen in newspapers and on television. The necessarily long exposures of this slow process often result in an intensity of gaze that asks the viewer to look longer, and the grainless, highly detailed surface brings out minute details of each individual. Meet Constantina | Hey, Im Constantina Theofanopoulou and I am a neuroscientist. My academic journey started off from Theoretical Linguistics in the Philosophy University of Athens (Greece). The main scientific question that bothered me was how humans can communicate such complex messages through vocal signals. As an undergraduate student I visited the Uni of Seville (Spain) where I was introduced to a new wave of Linguistics, called Cognitive Linguistics. This was life-changing for me and I decided to get enrolled in a Masters Programme in Barcelona that was meant to teach us how to study language from a neurocognitive perspective. During this programme, I realised that the question that I initially sought to resolve through a theoretical perspective can be much better approached through studying the neurobiology behind this question. This led me pursue a PhD in the neurobiology of language, where I (mainly) studied the role of oxytocin in vocal learning in birdsong, that scientists use as a model for human language. This shift from theory to hands-on experiments required a LOT of self-teaching and reaching out to people with more expertise who could help. Even though it might seem as a huge shift, to me it feels that its a different approach to resolve the same question (how is language made possible?). So I am all in favor for shifts in careers and I think that, with motivation and hard work, everything can be possible. In a couple of months, I will start my Post Doc at Rockefeller University :) To all these women out there: I strongly encourage you to NOT back down, to find other women and collaborate with them, to seek for help from women scientists, to talk to them about this ridiculous comment someone said in the workplace, rally around each other and stand together. Whenever Ive faced gender inequality in an outrageous way (unfortunately,#MeToo), Ive reminded myself the problem is not me its them. Nicole enlisted in the border patrol in March 19, and during training, she tore two straps in her knee. The injury didnt stop her from continuing the training and finishing her certified. After a month she had surgery and was in prolonged rehabilitation in her home, and despite everything she didnt give up and fought to return to serve in . Today Nicole serves as a warrior in Jerusalem and is nominated to go on a commanders course.
